Wolf Creek Pass Wins Race to Open for 2011

October 9th, 2011

Wolf Creek Ski Opening

The Wolf Creek Ski area got dumped with over 40 inches of snow in an early season snow so they decided to open for skiing yesterday. That made them the first ski area in the US open for skiing and it’s the earliest they’ve opened. They’ll be open through tomorrow October 10th and then plan to be open again for next week.

Loveland and A-Basin, long time rivals for being the first ski area in the US to open, said they may not have been the first this year but when they open they’ll be staying open.

Check out the article on OutThereColorado and also their photos.

Colorado Avalanche Alert

May 9th, 2011

Peru Creek Avalanche April 30, 2011

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center and the Colorado Geological Survey have issued an avalanche alert:

“Public, fieldworkers, recreationalists cautioned that unusually heavy snowpack could spark larger, stronger avalanches in uncommon locations. Unusually deep snowpack in parts of Colorado’s northern and central mountains has the potential to produce dangerous avalanches in pathways that may not have run in decades, and that may run farther than they have in recent memory.”

Many monitoring sites are recording snowpack levels of more than 160 percent of average, with some with levels well over 200 percent of an average year.

An example of this hazard occurred April 30, when an unusually large and destructive avalanche struck the Peru Creek drainage near the town of Montezuma in Summit County. This avalanche destroyed large, 100-plus year-old trees as well as a high-voltage tower that was installed in the late 1970’s. This was an isolated event, but an indication of what is possible this spring.

In addition, the Colorado Geological Survey warns that the heavy snowpack combined with a rapid warm-up could also lead to substantial mudslides and debris flows. For instance, similar conditions in 1984 led to more than 40 mudslides and debris flows in the Vail Valley. More information is available at Natural Resources Conservation Service with a map showing federal NRCS SNOTEL data on snowpack.
Backcountry advisories are available at the Colorado Avalanche Information Center through May 30.

10 Most Popular Blog Posts of 2010

January 7th, 2011

It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone. I don’t make New Year resolutions but I’m looking forward to new adventures and goals in 2011.

As we move into the new year, let’s take a look back at the top 10 most viewed posts on UltraRob’s Adventures in 2010. Interestingly the top 3 spots were the same as in 2009.

10. Jure Robic Dies in Accident

Jure Robic, an amazing ultra endurance cyclist, was killed during a training accident on September 24th. Reportedly he was training for the Crocodile Trophy and hit a car head on while descending a narrow road through the forest near his home in Slovenia. He won the Race Across America 5 times, more than any other male.

9. Wyss Wins RAAM, Robic Drops Out!

This post is from 2009 when Jure Robic dropped out of RAAM with 54 miles to go because he and his crew felt that he was given penalties unfairly while Wyss wasn’t given penalties when they felt he should have.

8. Felony Charge for Racing Leadville 100 Without Entry

Wendy Lyall used Katie Brazelton’s entry in the 2009 Leadville 100. It may have gone unnoticed but Wendy finished 2nd in the 40-49 age group although she was 36. They were both charged with felonies although they plead guilty to lesser charges. At least one and maybe both of them lost their jobs because of it.

7. Leadville 100 Race Across the Sky Movie on DVD

The movie made of the 2009 Leadville 100 when Lance Armstrong won was released on DVD in the spring of 2010.

6. 100 Mile Mountain Bike Races 2010

A list of 100 mile mountain bike races for 2010. I plan on posting a list of 2011 dirty centuries soon.

5. What are Tree Wells and How Do They Kill Skiers?

Last winter within a couple weeks in 2 different cases a skier was found dead in tree wells. This post explains what tree wells are and how they can kill skiers.

4. Livestrong Tattoo

When I broke my derailleur cable in the Black Hills of South Dakota in the summer of 2009, I visited Rabbit Bike in Hill City to get a new one. The owner had a Livestrong tattoo on his calf.

3. Leadville 100 Mountain Bike FAQ

Since Lance Armstrong raced the Leadville 100 in 2008 and 2009 and the Race Across the Sky movie, there’s been a lot of interest in the race. The main Leadville 100 mountain bike FAQ page was the most popular but a couple of the sub posts also made it into the top 10. How to train for the Leadville 100 and the best bike for the Leadville 100 were in the top 10 but I grouped them with this post.

2. Garmin Edge 705 Review – First Impressions

After not having a GPS on my bike or a computer at all on my mountain bike, I upgraded to the cool Garmin Edge 705 a couple years ago. This post has my initial thoughts on it.

1. Top 5 Reasons Cyclists Shave Their Legs

The question I’m asked most about cycling is why do cyclists shave their legs. The 5 reasons I posted continue to be very popular. I also answer some questions in the Cyclist Leg Shaving Questions and Answers post.

Free Skiing at Monarch Ski Resort

December 30th, 2010

Skiing at Monarch

A big thanks to Tim over at Pikes Peak Sports with hooking me up with a couple tickets to the Monarch Ski Area. I mainly ski in the backcountry, so I gave the tickets to my brother since he was in town for Christmas. He and his son skied at Monarch on Christmas Eve and the snow was great!

You can win Monarch tickets from Pikes Peak Sports. They are giving away a 4 pack of Monarch tickets every week through the end of the ski season. You can find all the details here.

It’s Warren Miller time

November 4th, 2010

John Morrison in Antarctica

Four words: Penguins, pow pow and polar bears.  Or is that five words?  Whatever.

It’s one way to describe this year’s Warren Miller extravaganza.

Called “Wintervention,” this year’s ski film focuses on ski and board addicts who throw aside jobs, responsibilities, families, and finances in the pursuit of snow. Sure, the plot is a little thin, but it works because, after all, it’s November.

If you haven’t gotten tickets, you still can – it’s Friday and Saturday at the Pikes Peak Center (go to www.pikespeakcenter.com for more info). If you aren’t local, you can get dates for other locations here.

And if you haven’t been daydreaming about powder, this film will fuel your imagination and make you check the calendar for possible “sick days.” Vail Resorts and Telluride are featured prominently in this year’s show, but don’t look for freebies there – ticket holders will go home with buy one/get one offers at Steamboat, Winter Park and Crested Butte, along with a coupon for Colorado Ski & Golf.

This is the 61st year for WM, but there’s no footage of Warren or his distinctive voice.  Miller sold his company in the 1980s to Warren Miller Entertainment.  Now, after considerable legal wrangling, the two are separate entities, with WME only owning Miller’s name in ski films and magazines and Miller himself relaunching the Warren Miller Company.

But that’s boring.  Let’s talk “Wintervention.”

As in previous years, the film crew travels the world, starting in Antarctica and ending in Norway, 500 miles from the North Pole. In between, there are jaunts to Austria and British Columbia, with a long visit at Vail Resorts and a loving tribute to Telluride.  Colorado’s ski legends feature prominently, with Chris Anthony and Chris Davenport getting the most screen time.  And Lindsey Vonn even makes an appearance, answering the burning question: what do ski racers do when they aren’t training?

You say you’re not a big mountain kind of person?  Heli-skiing isn’t on your to-do list?  You’ve never skied anywhere except Colorado?  Go for the penguins.

Women’s Skis – Secrets Revealed

October 28th, 2010

Whether or not women’s skis differ from men’s skis has been a subject contemplated by ski consumers for a long time.  Over 20 years ago the reply was probably not—the difference was a layer of pastel paint and possibly a few fluffy, floral designs.  At least women looked as if they had their own ski, with ski companies pursuing women’s attraction  to panache.  Thankfully that has significantly changed across the years and women’s skis are now constucted to revolve around their distinct physiology.  And that makes all the difference in the world of women’s skiing, notably for the beginning and intermediate skier.

A Lady’s Ski Design Spins Round Her Center of Gravity

As it’s transparent to the naked eye, women boastfully display a different center of gravity than men.  In a woman the center drops lower around the hips, which pushes her weight backwards  and concentrates it closer to the tail end.  She has a tendency to lean back when skiing.  While a man’s center shifts above the navel where there exists more muscle bulk.

Women’s skis are altered to adjust for this key dissimilarity.  Ski boots and bindings are fitted a couple of centimeters forward towards the ski tip. The waist of the ski is also moved forward resulting in a shorter, lighter tip. And a woman’s ski is designed for more responsiveness  making it easier for her to initiate quick, concise turns.   Altogether these adjustments  result in better performance and easier execution.

Women weigh less and aren’t as tall as men. So their skis are made with lightweight materials for less fatigue on the hills.  A women’s ski line provides a wider range of short lengths and with the new developments today you don’t have to compromise steadiness and speed.  Enjoying the hobby in comfort is also critical to women resulting in boots that are built less stiff.

Women’s Skis are Designed on Technology

The brand name manufacturers of women’s skis such as Salomon appreciate these key dissimilarities, and build skis to help women experience  a comfortable glide  with high execution and ease.  The front runners in the ski trade  during the past several years have invested  a lot of effort, time and money on research and technology in order to present unique skis that accommodate the female physique .  Then women specific modifications  for each ski classification and level are extensively tested by women, on site, with  a full range of expertise.

Yes There is a Difference

No matter what your skill level, from trainee to pro, or passion—discovering new mountain terrain, demolishing the parks, speeding for the prize or maybe you favor something a little more relaxing like a nice downhill jog–you will find brand name skis crafted to accommodate your unique anatomy and desires. With all this information, it is easy to figure out a woman’s physique fashions all the difference. Whether snow skis are different between the genders, the reply is absolutely and it’s all packed by research not powdery fluff.
