Important Considerations for Buying a UV Rash Guard

October 11th, 2010

Are you out looking for a uv rash guard? If you’re shopping for uv rash guards there are some extremely important factors you need to think about before you make a smart purchase. Maybe you need a uv rash guard for scuba diving, water sports, martial arts, jiu jitsu, or just sun protection. Whatever the motivations for purchasing this type of garment, you need to make certain you’re shopping decisions are not foolish ones because this purchase is imperative to your wellness. There are extremely important details to consider prior to committing any money on a uv rash guard, such as the materials used, the comfort and sun protection warranty, monetary value considerations, the origin of the product manufacturer and a few other important details. Read on and this valuable uv rash guard shopping companion will enable you to become an secure uv rash guard buyer in only a brief minute or two.

1. Materials and Fabric

Quality uv rash guard is manufactured with Lycra and Nylon, which are two fabrics that when blended together provide the optimum rash protection and flexibility. The proper composition of materials is close to 80% Nylon and 20% Lycra, which has been scientifically tested by many uv rash guard technicians. Some makers manufacture a garment made of spandex, or blend of spandex and cotton because those fabrics cost less than better quality Lycra. These “knock offs” of better uv rash guards are usually poorly designed and break down easily. Not to mention the limitations in SPF protection!

2. Comfort, Sizing, and Satisfaction Guarantee

Clothing products are usually the most challenging goods to shop for on the world wide web especially athletic fitting uv rash guards. If you are buying uv rash guard vests on the internet, or any bathing suit for that matter, you’d be intelligent to make sure the organization you’re ordering through offers and exchange program. When you receive your uv rash guard, try it on and check for any uncomfortable areas, scratchy surfaces, and any areas that could cause irritation. Because after all, we want to eliminate rash not create it.

3. Rash and SPF Sun Protection

Quality uv rash guards provide both rash protection and a strong SPF protection. “SPF” stands for “Sun Protection Factor” which is typically measured as a percent of how much of the harmful UV/UVA solar rays are blocked. You want to get a uv rash guard with at least 95% SPF rating because this lets you to wear it without needing to concern about sunscreen. The manufacturer promoting the item should be able to guarantee the SPF score with proof from a radiation testing laboratory.

4. Affordable Cost and Top Quality

The uv swim shirt options and costs on the web generally range from approximately $20 to around $40 in most cases. Popular brands try to charge the inflated amounts because they brand their logos all over the garments to attempt to make them look more appealing to end users. However, these bigger surf brands are not offering any better materials, protection, or comfort guarantees than the smaller organizations who strive for quality uv rash guards rather than branding. If you desire to pay $10-15 more for a ‘logo’ that’s okay, but if you are simply interested in purchasing a high quality uv rash guard with a great color, better than average comfort, and one hundred percent protection, there are brands who guarantee that value without the higher cost.

5. Origin – Is It “Made in USA”?

If you decide to buy a uv rash guard which was made overseas in places like China, you are probably signing yourself up for letdown. Specialty Lycra fabrics and professional “flat lock” stitching is needed for guaranteeing the spf protection, durability and flexibility you deserve, particularly if you are shopping for surf uv rash guards. Most overseas trading operations have goals to mass produce rather than use heedful quality control in their manufacturing. Be sure the organization you buy your uv rash guards from displays a “Made In USA” promise.

Now that you understand which specifications to look for in a uv rash guard and the manufacturer offering the uv rash guards, feel free to begin shopping. There are a handful of good organizations on the web, so how do you be sure where to start? Well, like any online shopping experience you can start with any directions that friends and family have provided you, and take advantage of the resources offered by knowledgeable people offering quality information around the product. Shopping for a uv rash guard can be fairly simple if you’re following the guidelines I’ve just provided you, so keep your eyes open and shop smart.

Rusty Collins is Vice President of Swell Marketing LLC in Orange County, CA. – an organization specializing in surfing apparel, beach wear, and sun protection technology in clothing. For uv rash guards and more information on sun protection, visit website: http://www.myrashguards.com

Gear Lust

August 11th, 2010

We’re over halfway through the traditional camping season, and I’m feeling like some new gear. Here are a few things that look intriguing:

The Jetboil Flash, a cool stove that include a thermo chromic temperature indicator on the three color neoprene stripes (it shows you when the contents are hot); a drink-through lid; and a windscreen for the adjustable-flame burner.   The neoprene cozy is the most innovative part of this stove – it stays in place during cooking and doesn’t melt; and it has a pocket for utensils.

Teva Illum flip flops, with LED lights.   If you’ve ever stumbled out of your tent in the dark for a bathroom break, you’ll appreciate this idea.  Tiny detachable LED lights illuminate the ground about eight feet in front of each step. The lights, which are waterproof,  run on batteries that can be replaced.

The Saris Bones trunk bike rack.  I admit it – the color choices sold me on this (who could resist purple?)  but the stability and six attachment straps are also worthy features.  It has a unique shape that’s different than other car bike racks.

The REI Adventure Dog Dream Bed. This is on my dog’s wish list – it has a self-inflating pad insert that allows you to roll it up for easy carrying, and a Sherpa fleece cover.  Think Therm-a-Rest for dogs.

The Dajo Survivor knife, because you can never have too many camping knives. This cool tool has a stainless-steel blade, a fire-starting notch and a Swedish FireSteel included, along with a sheath, emergency whistle and five foot of cord.

A CamelBak insulated stainless steel Better Bottle.  How optimistic I am when I go hiking with my water bottle filled with ice.  How disappointed I am when I stop for my first drink of warmed water.  This bottle eliminates that disappointment, and it has a cool silver finish.

The Gear Company Shuffle

May 18th, 2010

Columbia is branching out once again. The company, which also owns Mountain Hardwear, Sorel, Montrail and Pacific Trail, has launched a new line of watches and instruments for the outdoors.  Products will feature various combinations of altimeters, barometers, compasses, thermometers, ski timers, interval timers and more.  The initial launch will feature 36 watches in 10 different styles, available in Columbia stores, online, and in outdoor and sporting goods stores.

In other outdoor gear business news, Clarus, a publicly traded investment firm, has bought specialty equipment company Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd., and Gregory Mountain Products, Inc., known for its backpacks.  Black Diamond’s CEO Peter Metcalf will run the new company under the Black Diamond name.

i-gotU gt-120 GPS Logger Review

February 24th, 2010

Since this summer I’ve been using a little GPS logger to record some of my mountain bike rides and hikes. It’s the i-gotU gt-120 GPS Logger from Mobile Action. As you can see in the photo above it’s very small.

Unlike the Garmin Edge 705 that I have for navigating and seeing my speed, distance, etc. while I’m riding, the GPS logger just records for download after the ride. Since I have the Edge 705 you may wonder why I’d use both. I received the i-gotU from Mobile Action so I could review it and ended up finding it very useful.

Since it’s water resistant, I’ve been just throwing it in my jersey pocket or hydration pack along with whatever else I’m carrying. It has a blue rubber bumper that fits around it to help cushion impacts. I haven’t taken any hard falls with it but it’s held up well bouncing around in my pocket.

It’s designed as a travel logger so you can share your adventures. The software that comes with the GPS logger makes it easy to geotag photos you take. If you aren’t familiar with geotagging, it adds GPS coordinates to photo files so services like Flickr can place them on a map.

It’s best to have the time set correctly on the camera since the software places the photos based on time. Even if the time isn’t set correctly, the software that comes with the gt-120 provides an easy way to adjust the time. If you know the time difference, you can enter it or you can drag the slider until it shows the photo in the right spot on the map.

Once photos have been added, you can then easily upload the map and photos to the web. They provide some space free on their @trip site and then you can buy additional space. Photos can be uploaded to @trip, Flickr or Picasa.

Once you’ve uploaded the map, you can share the link with friends or embed the map on your blog as you see below. You can also save the trip to file as a web page in .mhtml format or the Google Earth files as .kml or .kmz. When the map is uploaded to their website, they significantly reduce the number of waypoints so you don’t get as accurate of a route as you get saving it to file.

For me, saving to a Google Earth file is very useful. I used to need a couple software programs to create a map with photos of my rides. Now with the GPS logger and software it’s easy. I do have to do a bit of editing so the paths are right when I put it online. I made this Pueblo Reservoir map using the gt-120 and software.

The gt-120 has plenty of storage with 64,000 waypoints. It can be configured to store a waypoint every second or every several minutes and anything in between. There’s a setting to have it log at a different interval if your speed is higher than a set amount. I’ve been using mine with it set to log every 6 seconds. If my math is correct, that would mean I can store over 100 hours of data before it fills up.

How often a waypoint is saved also affects how long the battery lasts. With it set to log it estimates the battery will last 10 hours. I’ve used it a little longer than that without a recharge without a problem. Setting the logging interval to 12 seconds, gives an estimate of 30 hours of battery life.

The i-gotU GPS logger also is designed to work as a GPS receiver for navigation software. I haven’t tried using it that way so don’t know how it works.

i-gotU gt-120 GPS Logger Likes

  • Small Size
  • Easy to geotag photos
  • Easy to share adventures
  • Reasonably accurate even when in jersey pocket or outer pocket of pack

i-gotU gt-120 GPS Logger Dislikes

  • Charging and downloading data require a special USB cable. It’s probably used to keep dirt and water from getting in port.

  • Blue and red lights that indicate whether the logger is on, locked on satellites, etc. are very hard to see in sunlight.
  • The only charger is the USB cable so you need a computer or an adapter to charge it.
  • Some parts of the software aren’t intuitive

i-gotU gt-120 GPS Logger Specs

  • Dimension: 1.75 x 1.1 x 0.5 inches
  • Weight: 0.7 oz
  • Built-in SiRF StarIII 65nm low-power chipset
  • Built-in GPS patch antenna
  • Built-in flash memory
  • Built-in 230mAh Lithium-ion battery
  • 2 LED for tracking and battery/charger status indication
  • USB 1.1 interface for PC connection
  • Operation temperature: 15 to + 120 degrees Fahrenheit

Innovation Spotlighted at CES

January 5th, 2010
eneloop Bike

You probably recognize SANYO best for its LCD and plasma TVs, cameras and appliances. But the company is being honored this week for something completely different – a bike.

The SANYO eneloop hybrid bike received a Best of Innovations award in the eco-design and sustainable technology category at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The eneloop is a next-generation bicycle that features loop charging, which recharges the battery while you ride, and two-wheel drive with the front wheel motor-driven and the rear wheel dependent on pedaling force. A Power-up mode increases the output ratio of the power assistance motor, making uphill rides less taxing. You can buy this bike on the SANYO web site for $2,499.

Another cool invention honored with an Innovations award:

A GPS cradle for the iPod and iPod Touch, which enables GPS capability and provides a turn-by-turn navigation system with free nav software. It’s not available yet (Update: It’s now available).
