UpaDowna Expo at CityROCK

November 22nd, 2010

Josh Beaudoin of Slackline Visions

Lots of people had fun at CityROCK at the UpaDowna Demo and Expo organized by UpaDowna. The event benefited the Friends of Cheyenne Cañon.

I saw quite a few people trying out the Evolv rock climbing shoes. The slackline was also very popular. Josh Beaudoin of Slackline Visions was impressive on it. I was far from impressive on it and never made it more than a few steps.

I had a good chat with the guys from Mile High Mountaineering. They’re coming out with some cool packs in the spring with some innovate features including a built in raincover and stuff sack. There’s a zipper that opens the pack like a duffel in addition to the top opening.

The Synergy Manual Physical Therapy table stayed busy the whole time I was there. I’ve heard good things about them so I chatted with Kelly and Kevin. In addition to traditional physical therapy, they do trigger point dry needling. I thought they did acupuncture but dry needling works differently and causes muscles to spasm and then relax.

Kelly did it on my calf, which I guess is about the most uncomfortable muscle to have it done on. It was quite painful for just a second as she triggered different spots. Afterward my calf got quite stiff and sore. Now it feels back to normal. I can’t say it feels much better but I have a 15 year old injury in that leg that causes me pain most of the time. I would expect it to take some work to improve it.

Below are some photos from the event.

Free Demo Day And Expo At City Rock Tomorrow

November 19th, 2010
City Rock Climbing Gym

The great guys over at UpaDowna are putting on a cool event at the downtown Colorado Springs CityROCK tomorrow from noon until 5. Evolv will be there demoing the rock climbing shoes. There will also be several other outdoor relating companies and organizations there including Friends of Cheyenne Cañon, Pikes Peak Sports, Synergy Manual Physical Therapy, Pikes Peak Leave No Trace, Climb-Axe, Mile High Mountaineering and Alstrin Films.

The Demo and expo are free and it sounds like they’ll be great specials if you want to spend a while climbing. Bristol Brewing is providing free beer although I’d suggest you don’t do too much drinking until you’re finished climbing.

Go on over to UpdaDowna for all the details. I hope to see you there tomorrow.

DA Defends Rich Man Not Getting Felony Charge

November 19th, 2010

Last week I wrote about a wealthy money manager, Martin Joel Erzinger, hitting a cyclist and seriously injuring him in Avon, CO. He left him laying in the road and drove a few miles before he called Mercedes roadside assistance because he had a broken mirror and damaged bumper. He claims he didn’t know he hit anyone.

If Erzinger knew he hit Milo, it’s clear Erzinger should be locked up. If he didn’t know (which I don’t believe), then he shouldn’t be driving and his license should be revoked for life and his Mercedes taken from him.

The District Attorney, Mark Hurlbert, decided to not charge him with a felony even though Colorado law is clear that it’s a class 5 felony. Hurlbert said that “felony convictions have some pretty serious job implications for someone in Mr. Erzinger’s profession, and that entered into his decision”. The news quickly spread from the cycling community to mainstream media. Last I checked over 13 thousand people signed online petition asking Hurlbert to not drop the felony charge.

Hurlbert explained in a letter posted by the Vail Daily that it was too late to change since the plea bargain had been offered. Not that he would have considered it anyway because he argues that he made the best choice.

Because Erzinger had no previous criminal record, he would have likely been given a deferred sentence on the felony charge. If he met the conditions of the deferred sentence, in 2 to 4 years the felony would be removed from his record and he’d be able to say he hadn’t had a felony. In the meantime he could have lost his securities license and if not he’d have to notify all of his clients that he’s a convicted felon.

Erzinger has plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and careless driving causing serious bodily injury. These misdemeanors will stay on his record. He will lose his driver’s license, face potential jail time as determined by the judge and still have to pay restitution.

Milo’s attorney has filed a motion asking the court to review the District Attorney’s decision. The judge could still throw out the plea bargain deal. Then Erzinger could face all 3 charges.

VeloNews has an article that explains the legal issues in the case in more depth.

In other car versus cyclist craziness, Cyclelcious posted about a drunk driver that killed a 7th grade boy riding his bike. The driver is now in jail and is suing the boy’s parents for “contributory negligence” because he wasn’t wearing a bike helmet.

Leadville 100 Registration Open

November 18th, 2010

Lifetime Fitness Founder and Others at Top of Columbine Climb

Registration for the Leadville Trail races is open including for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race. In the past registration didn’t open until late December or early January. The deadline for getting into the mountain bike lottery hasn’t changed though and is still January 31st.

I’m planning on entering again for my 8th time although I haven’t finished the last 2 years. This year I had an asthma attack just before the Columbine climb and last year I got a stomach bug the night before and bailed after 20 miles. Even without the asthma and stomach bug, I was barely in shape the last 2 years but so far I’ve done better at staying active and maintaining my weight this off season.

From everything I’ve heard, it doesn’t increase your changes of getting in the lottery if you enter early so I plan to wait just in case something comes up that would keep me from doing the race. Last year I waited until a few days before the deadline.

The entry lottery isn’t completely random and I have some information on how the lottery has worked in the past. I don’t know how it will change now that Lifetime fitness owns the race. For more information on registering go to the Leadville Trail 100 website.

Maintenance Bible Retooled

November 12th, 2010

The fifth edition of one of the most well-known books on mountain bike care and repair is now available.  “Zinn & The Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance” (Velo Press) is the world’s best-selling book on mountain bike care and repair.  It’s not something you want to carry in your backpack – it’s a hefty 464 pages of information on illustrated tips for repairing, maintaining, tuning and upgrading your mountain bike.  But that size means it (almost) has it all.

Some highlights:

  • The basics for regular maintenance of your mountain bike.
  • Advance repair instructions.
  • Information on the newest components.
  • Problem solving for issues such as frozen parts and stripped threads.
  • A glossary and reference guide.

When Worlds Collide

November 11th, 2010

The outdoors has been featured prominently in entertainment news lately.

Last week, Oprah Winfrey and her friend Gayle visited Yosemite on her first-ever camping trip and first-ever trip to a national park.  She was invited by park ranger Shelton Johnson, who has made it a personal goal to increase the number of African-American people visiting the national parks.

The pair embarked on an Oprah-style shopping spree (no spending limit) at a California REI store before they went, stocking up on supplies, and arrived at Yosemite with a stuffed Coleman camper and enough gourmet food (sea bass, anyone?)  to feed the entire campground.   I have to admit it was entertaining TV.  Oprah built a respectable campfire, but then had to wait until after dark for the coals to be ready for cooking; Gayle started her camp slipper on fire; Oprah wore pajamas that matched her sleeping bag (who wears pajamas when they’re camping!?)

Johnson was prominently featured in the segment, and he got to make his case for getting African-Americans to visit the outdoors.  It’s been a goal of his for a long time.   He’s the only black park ranger in Yosemite and he told a newspaper reporter a year ago that he’s trying to increase the number of black Yosemite visitors (less than 1 percent of the total).

“It’s bigger than just African Americans not visiting national parks,” he said. “It’s a disassociation from the natural world.  I think it is, in part, a memory of the horrible things that were done to us in rural America.”

Oprah is back in one of her homes, but Johnson’s campaign hasn’t stopped. Now, he wants another high-profile visitor: rapper Snoop Dogg.  Johnson and change.org have teamed up to lure Dogg into the park.  “All Snoop Dogg has to do is go camping in Yosemite and it would change the world,” Johnson says.  There’s a petition to Snoop Dog’s PR firm, 5W Public Relations, calling on the rapper to go camping.  Check it out  here.

But wait…that’s not all.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Forest Service presented their newest honorary forest ranger with a badge and ranger hat to Betty White.  White, who is 88, said she wanted to be a forest ranger when she was a young girl, but that women weren’t allowed into the agency then.

“Wilderness is harder and harder to find these days on this beautiful planet, and we’re abusing our planet to the point of almost no return,” she said. “In my heart I’ve been a forest ranger all my life, but now I’m official.”

Kalan Beisel Rides to Second National Championship

November 9th, 2010

Kalan Beisel - 24 Hours of Moab 2010

This is a guest post by Tim Bergsten from Pikes Peak Sports. Pikes Peak Sports is a site for the outdoor community in the Pikes Peak Region. If you’re interested in guest posting on UltraRob, please contact me.

Two weeks before the 24 Hours of Moab mountain bike race, fate was beating up local rider and mountain bike racer Kalan Beisel. He had won a national championship as part of a 4-person men’s team at the 24 Hours of Moab Mountain Bike Race in 2009, but he wasn’t entered to race this year. It seemed there would be no defending his title. And then he received a phone call from his racing buddy Len Zanni. Beisel, 28, landed on a dream team and won a second national championship.

Beisel graduated from Manitou Springs High School. He has raced mountain bikes for about five years and has been a pro for two years. He currently rides for Team Pro Cycling and is a scholarship rider for Carmichael Training Systems. He also manages to squeeze in time to make a living as a hairstylist at Genesis Salon.

He recently answered a few questions for PikesPeakSports.us. Here is the interview.

Kalan Beisel - 24 Hours of Moab 2010In 2009, you won with teammates Russel Finsterwald, J.J. Clark and Rob Sousa, some familiar names in the C. Springs race scene. This year, you rode with a collection of guys from western Colorado (Len Zanni, Ross Schnell and Jay Henry). What was that like?

In 2009, racing with my Pro Cycling teammates and winning our first national championship was one of the coolest feelings ever! We went into 2010 expecting to have the same team defend the title, but things didn’t work out. Turns out, getting four fast guys together to race a 24-hour race is harder than it sounds, because two weeks before the race my friend Len Zanni called me to ask and see if I was interested to ride on his HoneyStinger/Trek team. He was also having a hard time finding a fourth rider. After I heard the line up for the team, I couldn’t say no! I couldn’t believe I had the opportunity to race on a team with some of the top mountain bike racers in the nation. Of course, this also put huge pressure on me to perform. I was almost more intimidated by my own team more than the race itself! Lol! Thankfully, I had one of the best races of my life and pulled my weight for the team. I also ended up posting the fastest night lap of the race two years in a row!

What was the most challenging thing about this race and how did you deal with it?

The 2-to-6 a.m. night laps are the most challenging part of the race. Getting motivated to tear your legs off at three in the morning isn’t the easiest thing in the world. I figured out – after doing four 24-hour races on a team – that staying awake the whole time is much easier than falling asleep and having to wake up feeling groggy and tired. This year I just started pounding coffee and Redbull starting around 2 a.m. to stay awake until the sun came up. Good music and friends help too!

When you look back on this race, what will you remember?

Looking back I will remember tents, dirt covering everything I own, sand, standing at the starting line shivering waiting for Jay to come in, lots of dirty chamois, Ross being rad, Honey Stinger waffles, stars and stripes, and one hell of a good time!

You rode the last lap. What was that like, knowing you were in the lead and that your team and another championship were waiting for you at the finish?

Coming in for the team’s last lap was quite the honor. I knew as long as I didn’t break my bike in half, or something like that, we would take the win. At that point we had a 45-minute lead and victory was in sight. Crossing the line and hearing the cheers from everyone was a feeling I’ll never forget. I’ve never really felt so proud and overwhelmed with happiness. Very cool!

So with future 24 Hours of Moab races in mind, what do you think of the words “Kalan Beisel, Men’s Solo rider”?

Someday you will definitely hear the words “Kalan” and “solo” in the same sentence, not exactly sure how soon that will be though! Not sure I’m crazy enough … yet..

Looking ahead, what cycling goals are you aiming for in 2011 and beyond?

In 2011 my goals will remain the same as last year’s. I will be racing the National ProXCT series and as many local races as I can squeeze in there. I will also be racing the Bailey Hundo again and thinking I might race the Leadville 100. My main and most important focus is 2011 MTB National Championships.

Hitting and Leaving Cyclist on Road Isn’t a Felony?

November 8th, 2010

Bike Wreck

That’s what District Attorney Mark Hurlbert believes if the hit and run driver has a high paying job. Hulbert is the DA that didn’t have a problem charging Katie Brazelton and Wendy Lyall with felonies last spring because Wendy raced with Katie’s Leadville 100 entry in 2009. Both of them lost their jobs even though the charges pleaded down to misdemeanors.

On July 3rd, Dr. Steven Milo was riding his bike near Edwards, CO and was hit from behind by Martin Joel Erzinger. Erzinger drove a few miles to Avon where he called the Mercedes auto assistance service to ask that his car be towed because of damage. Erzinger told police he didn’t know he had hit Milo.

Milo suffered spinal cord injuries, bleeding from his brain and damage to his knee and scapula, according to court documents. Over the past six weeks he has suffered “disabling” spinal headaches and faces multiple surgeries for a herniated disc and plastic surgery to fix the scars he suffered in the accident.

Now the DA wants to drop felony charges against Erzinger and instead let him plead to two misdemeanor traffic charges because he could lose his job. Erzinger is a director in private wealth management at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in Denver. He manages more than $1 billion in assets and would have to publicly disclose any felony charge within 30 days, according to North American Securities Dealers regulations.

The Vail Daily quotes Hulbert as saying “Felony convictions have some pretty serious job implications for someone in Mr. Erzinger’s profession, and that entered into it, When you’re talking about restitution, you don’t want to take away his ability to pay.”

“Mr. Erzinger struck me, fled and left me for dead on the highway,” Milo wrote. “Neither his financial prominence nor my financial situation should be factors in your prosecution of this case.”

You can read more details on the case in an article from the Vail Daily.

A petition has been set up that asks Hulbert to not drop felony charges. Maybe if Hulbert hears enough outrage, he’ll reconsider.

Quiznos Pro Challenge Host Cities Announced

November 4th, 2010

Quiznos Pro Challenge Logo

The host cities for the 7 stage Quiznos Pro Challenge bike race were announced in Denver this morning. It will take place August 22-28 next year. 120 world-class cyclists are expected to participate in the seven day race that will cover nearly 600 miles.

The race will begin right here Colorado Springs with a prologue. It will then head to the mountains for what should be some great stages. The race will finish in Denver. Surprisingly the Boulder area was left out of the route.

They’re calling the finish in Crested Butte a mountain-top finish. Presumably it’ll finish at Mount Crested Butte. Although there’s a steep but short climb up to it, I’d hardly call it a mountain top.

2011 Quiznos Pro Challenge Route

August 22 – Stage 1, Prologue time trial, Colorado Springs
August 23 – Stage 2, Salida to Crested Butte, mountain-top finish
August 24 – Stage 3, Gunnison to Aspen, mountain stage
August 25 – Stage 4, Vail, time trail, former Coors Classic stage
August 26 – Stage 5, Avon to Steamboat Springs
August 27 – Stage 6, Steamboat Springs to Breckenridge
August 28 – Stage 7, Golden to Denver
