It’s Warren Miller time

November 4th, 2010

John Morrison in Antarctica

Four words: Penguins, pow pow and polar bears.  Or is that five words?  Whatever.

It’s one way to describe this year’s Warren Miller extravaganza.

Called “Wintervention,” this year’s ski film focuses on ski and board addicts who throw aside jobs, responsibilities, families, and finances in the pursuit of snow. Sure, the plot is a little thin, but it works because, after all, it’s November.

If you haven’t gotten tickets, you still can – it’s Friday and Saturday at the Pikes Peak Center (go to www.pikespeakcenter.com for more info). If you aren’t local, you can get dates for other locations here.

And if you haven’t been daydreaming about powder, this film will fuel your imagination and make you check the calendar for possible “sick days.” Vail Resorts and Telluride are featured prominently in this year’s show, but don’t look for freebies there – ticket holders will go home with buy one/get one offers at Steamboat, Winter Park and Crested Butte, along with a coupon for Colorado Ski & Golf.

This is the 61st year for WM, but there’s no footage of Warren or his distinctive voice.  Miller sold his company in the 1980s to Warren Miller Entertainment.  Now, after considerable legal wrangling, the two are separate entities, with WME only owning Miller’s name in ski films and magazines and Miller himself relaunching the Warren Miller Company.

But that’s boring.  Let’s talk “Wintervention.”

As in previous years, the film crew travels the world, starting in Antarctica and ending in Norway, 500 miles from the North Pole. In between, there are jaunts to Austria and British Columbia, with a long visit at Vail Resorts and a loving tribute to Telluride.  Colorado’s ski legends feature prominently, with Chris Anthony and Chris Davenport getting the most screen time.  And Lindsey Vonn even makes an appearance, answering the burning question: what do ski racers do when they aren’t training?

You say you’re not a big mountain kind of person?  Heli-skiing isn’t on your to-do list?  You’ve never skied anywhere except Colorado?  Go for the penguins.

Race Across the Sky 2010 Tomorrow

November 3rd, 2010

Here’s a reminder that Race Across the Sky, which covers the 2010 Leadville 100 is in movie theaters tomorrow evening, November 4th. It includes a live panel discussion with participating athletes Levi Leipheimer, Rebecca Rusch, Erik Weihenmayer and others. Although there will be an encore presentation on November 9th, it isn’t showing at any Colorado Springs theaters on that date.

Last year the movie sold out in many locations. I’m guessing that was a least partly because Lance Armstrong was in it but I’d get my tickets in advance. From the trailer, it looks like they got some great shots of the race again.

You can get last year’s Race Across the sky on DVD here or at Amazon.

Quiznos Pro Challenge Route Set – Does It Include the Springs?

November 1st, 2010

Quiznos Pro Challenge Logo

Media folks on the Western Slope are saying they’ve been told the upcoming Quiznos Pro Challenge bike race won’t visit the towns of Telluride or Durango.  Loveland is out of luck, too, according to the Reporter Herald, which also reported that 20 cities placed bids for the race but only six were accepted.   So which cities won?  The Associated Press reports that  Gov. Bill Ritter, city reps and pro cyclists will gather at the state capitol Thursday to unveil the route.  The race is scheduled Aug. 22-28, 2011.

WMBA of COS Halloween Bike Crit

November 1st, 2010

WMBA Halloween Bike Crit

The WMBA of COS Halloween Crit on Saturday was a fun event. There were a lot of great costumes. I think it would have been hard to ride in some of the costumes.

The crit was 20 minutes. As if riding in costume wasn’t enough of a challenge, there was the limbo, jello shots, a cup stacking station and required whipped cream refueling. It looked like all the racers were having fun and watching was a blast too.

Awards were given to the “fastest” racers and those with the best costumes. There were also prize drawings for great things like a Giant Cruiser bike, Avid CR brakes, Rock Shox SID World Cup Fork and much more. There also was a post-crit potluck with beer provided by Bristol.

A few of the photos I took are below and you can see my complete set of WMBA of COS Halloween Crit photos here.

Everest Climber to be At City Rock This Afternoon

November 1st, 2010

Eric Alexander

Everest climber, Eric Alexander, will be at City Rock today from 1 – 3. He will give a brief presentation of some of his adventures and the debut of his new book, The Summit. Immediately following the discussion, you will have the opportunity to experience an indoor climb with Eric and students from the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind. You can find more about the event here.

Eric has interesting story with mountaineering. He survived a 150′ fall in the Himalayas on Mt. Amadablam in 2000 and then developed pulmonary edema and had to be air lifted out. The next 8 months he struggled with pneumonia and couldn’t train for Everest. Still on May 25th, 2001, Eric defied the odds and scaled Mt. Everest guiding his blind friend Erik Weihenmayer to its lofty 29,035′ summit.
