Peak Region Cyclist

Peak Region Cyclist May 2010 Cover

The May edition of the Peak Region Cyclist has been out for a couple weeks now. The online version isn’t available yet. I know David Pico, the publisher, was reworking something to do with the online version.

The cover photo is my photo of the Colligiate Men’s A’s at the Colorado College Criterium. You can see more of Colorado College Criterium photos here.

I’ve been getting questions about what is going on with Peak Region Cyclist since the Facebook page became Front Range Cyclist and there’s a new The Official Peak Region Cyclist Magazine Facebook page. David Pico and Jon Severson have been running the Peak Region Cyclist the last couple years. Lately they haven’t agreed on the vision for the magazine.

David will continue publishing Peak Region Cyclist. Jon has headed off to create a new print magazine called the Front Range Cyclist along with mobile apps and more of a web presence. David plans to change the time and format of the Peak Region Cyclist Bike Show but I don’t know details on it yet. I don’t know if there are any plans for a Front Range Cyclist Show.

Both David and Jon are great guys. The Peak Region Cyclist is a great local cycling magazine and I hope these changes are only good for the magazine. I also hope Jon will create a successful magazine covering cycling here on the Colorado Front Range.

Palmer Park MTB Race Photos

May 27th, 2010
Matt Simmons at Palmer Park Race

I’ve uploaded several photos of the Ascent Cycling MTB Series race. You can see a few below. Clicking on them will show a larger image. The full set in higher resolution is here.

I’ve also gotten several questions about where the mama bear and cubs were on the course. When I saw them there were in the northeast part of Palmer Park not far from Austin Bluffs although they were first seen close to the central part of the park. The photos are geotagged so this map shows where the bears were on the course when I took the photos.

Still Cold, Snowy in the Colorado High Country

May 26th, 2010
Camping Near Lake City

Planning on camping this weekend?  The region’s late-season snows have taken their toll on campgrounds near the Colorado Front Range. The U.S. Forest Service suggests contacting the ranger district where you want to camp before you head out.

Here’s a roundup:

Leadville Ranger District:  719-486-0749 – All sites are open, but some Turquoise Lake campgrounds are without water and flushable toilets.

Salida Ranger District:  719-539-3591 – Monarch Park and North Fork campgrounds are still closed.

San Carlos Ranger District:  719-269-8500 – Blue and Bear Lakes campgrounds are still closed.

Pikes Peak Ranger District:  719-636-1602 – All sites are open, but the Crags still has snow on the ground.

South Platte Ranger District:  303-275-5610  – All sites are open.

South Park Ranger District:  719-836-2031 – Kite Lake and Selkirk campgrounds are still closed. Jefferson Lake is still frozen, so it’s closed to boating and fishing.

Action on Everest

As the wind buffets the Colorado Front Range today, it makes me think about Mount Everest and its legendary jet stream.

This is the climbing season on the world’s highest peak. According to everestnews.com, there have been 401 summits and two deaths as of Sunday. On Saturday, Jordan Romero, 13, became the youngest person to reach the summit. Romero, from California, has now climbed six of the world’s seven summits – the highest peaks on each of the world’s continents.  He started with Mount Kilimanjaro when he was nine.

If the weather holds, more history will be made today.  Dave Hahn is climbing toward his 12th summit of Everest. At 11 summits, he already held the record for more summits than any other non-Sherpa climber.

Hahn is guiding Leif Whittaker, 25, the son of Jim Whittaker, who was the first American to climb Everest in 1963.

He’s posting written and audio reports from the mountain. Read and listen to his comments via satellite phone on www.greatoutdoors.com

Hahn is one of the most respected mountain guides in the world, and he has spent much of his life on the world’s tallest peak. And he is continually asked why he keeps returning.

I remember reading his list of “Top 10 Good Reasons to Climb Everest” posted several years ago on mountainzone.com

 1. What else are you going to do with your life? It’s only life, after all.

 2. Because it’s still there.

 3. Can’t beat the food.

 4. It is hard as heck and the outcome is uncertain.

 5. Everest is a beautiful and aesthetic peak.

 6. Everest is higher than any other mountain.

 7. ???

 8. —

 9. !!!

 10. OK, so we occasionally run out of good reasons to climb Everest.

Bears at Palmer Park Mountain Bike Race

May 22nd, 2010
Bears at Mountain Bike Race in Palmer Park

Today was the first race in the Ascent Cycling MTB Series put on by Sand Creek Sports. Mountain Bikers weren’t the only ones to show up. A mama bear and her 2 cubs wandered through the course during the Pro race during the afternoon.

I was out shooting photos of the race. My friend, Matt Simmons, was in 4th. I was expecting to come by and I kept waiting longer than I thought it should be. My first thought was he had crashed but no one else came by either.

All of a sudden my friend hanging out with me said to look behind. There was the mama bear and her 2 cubs walking across the course. They crossed a couple parts of the course and went down into a drainage.

Soon my friend came by along with about 7 other riders. By then I think the top 3 had a gap of nearly 10 minutes. In the end I doubt it made much difference if any difference in placing since the top 3 already had a fairly good gap.

Matt said he was close to the bears when he got stopped. The mama bear got up on her hind legs and was growling. He was happy when they moved on but knew they headed to where the course looped back. He wasn’t sure how long to wait to make sure he didn’t run into them again.

I also got several shots of the racers and will get some posted in the next day or two. In the meantime, here are a few more photos of the bears.

Update: I’ve uploaded several race photos. I’ve gotten questions about where I saw the bears. This map on SmugMug shows the locations of the bear photos.

Ride of Silence Report 2010

May 21st, 2010
Ride of Silence Colorado Springs 2010

Thanks to Mark for the Ride Video

Ride of Silence Colorado Springs 2010Wednesday evening was the Ride of Silence. There were 310 rides across the world. Here in Colorado Springs we a good turn out with about 30 riders. We rode from Old Town Bike shop to EJ and Jayson’s memorial on the westside.

Thanks to David Peal for printing up signs and getting them laminated so we could pin them to our backs. They said “Same Roads, Same Rights Same Rules”, “Ride of Silence” and “Share the Road”. Allen Beauchamp arranged to have a bagpipe player at EJ and Jayson’s memorial. Allen also helped out by contacting the police and letting them know we’d be riding.

Thanks to everyone who came out. I’d like to see our ride grow larger. If it gets much bigger, we’ll need police escort to stay safe and not have issues getting separated by traffic lights.

News First 5 had good coverage of the ride. Click the Video tab to see their on air report.

For a Lifetime

May 21st, 2010
Cheyenne Mountain State Park

The Colorado State Parks Aspen Leaf pass has always been a good deal for seniors. Now, it’s even better.  Governor Bill Ritter signed a law on Wednesday that makes the pass good for a lifetime.

The pass, for Colorado residents 64 and older, allows unlimited access to all Colorado State Parks, as well as discounted camping Sundays through Thursdays (excluding holidays).

For more information, go to the Colorado State Parks website.

Disappointed with Floyd Landis

May 20th, 2010

Floyd Landis and Dave Wiens at Leadville 100

In an interview with ESPN, Floyd Landis confirmed that emails the WSJ obtained to cycling officials and sponsors admitting to doping during his cycling career were his. He was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title after testing positive for synthetic testosterone. He still says that he didn’t take synthetic testosterone in the 2006 Tour de France. There was sloppy lab work but after spending $2 million he still lost his doping case.

Not only did Landis, admit to doping but accuses Lance Armstrong, Levi Leipheimer, Dave Zabriskie and other top American cyclists of also doping. I’ve long believed that most if not all top Pro cyclist are doping to some extent so I don’t find his accusations surprising. The thing is he says he doesn’t have any evidence to prove they did.

It’s one thing if he wants to clear his conscience of what he did. It seems like he’s trying to get back at others with his accusations.

Riding 5,000 Miles to Raise Awareness of Poverty

May 19th, 2010
Jason Christensen to Bike for Change
Pikes Peak Sports Photo

This is a guest post by Tim Bergsten from Pikes Peak Sports. Pikes Peak Sports is a site for the outdoor community in the Pikes Peak Region. If you’re interested in guest posting on UltraRob, please contact me.

Jason Christensen shakes his head in disbelief when he considers the statistics: In the United States, 40 million people live in poverty and the number is increasing. In Colorado, 15 percent of the children live in poverty, and one in four people, at some point in their lives, has struggled to purchase food.

Two years ago in El Paso County in Colorado, one in 12 adults received food stamps. Last year that ratio changed to one in 10.

“What is the one thing that should unify us all? Care and concern for the poor,” Christensen said. “Whatever your politics, we should all see that in our nation of abundance, 40 million people should not be living in poverty.”

And so the CEO of Catholic Charities of Colorado Springs is going to do something about it. In about 30 days, he’ll swing a leg over his bicycle in Cape Flattery, Wash., and ride 5,000 miles to Key West, Fla., in the Cycling for Change bike ride.

Over 100 days, he and a team of 11 other riders, will pedal over mountain passes, pierce the nation’s heartland, and roll across the southern states. Along the way, they’ll carry this message from Catholic Charities USA: Businesses, faith-based organizations, governments and individuals must work together to reduce poverty in the U.S.

The organization has a goal of reducing the number of families living at or below the poverty line by 50 percent by 2020.

The money that Christensen raises – he is soliciting sponsorships – will go to the Marian House Soup Kitchen in Colorado Springs. (Click here to make a donation) A year ago, the Marian house served 9,000 meals to kids, more than twice as many than in previous years.

Christensen’s motivations are simple.

“There is no reason that a child should go hungry,” he said. “Every child should have something to eat.”

Christensen, 40, grew up in Pekin, Ill. He learned to love cycling while pedaling a “50-pound Schwinn” around the countryside with his schoolmates. He later graduated from Western Illinois University with degrees in Political Science and French.

These days he is happiest when he’s skating with his recreation-league hockey team. But he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to spend the summer riding across the country. It’s going to be a challenge. He is recovering from knee surgery. His recent bike rides have mostly been inside at Carmichael Training Systems. But he has done simulated rides of up to 100 miles.

He did receive a bit of a shock a year ago when he was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. He is not insulin-dependent, but he does have to eat a healthful diet and exercise. It gave him to opportunity to look closely at his lifestyle.

“The thing about diabetes, you really need daily exercise,” Christensen said. “Playing hockey wasn’t going to be enough.”

In August he started a hard regimen of exercise. The results of his tough work came quickly.

“I lost 20 pounds,” Christensen said. “I didn’t feel so sluggish after eating. And my speed really picked up in hockey. It was a marked difference.”

And now he has 5,000 miles before him. The old Schwinn won’t make the trip. Christensen will ride a Roubaix Elite Specialized road bike.

“I guess you could say this is my way of acting out my mid-life crisis,” he said with a laugh.

As CEO of Catholic Charities, he oversees operation of the Marian House, but says the best thing about the job is sharing a meal with the guests, folks who have nowhere else to go for food.

“These people are struggling, but they are beautiful on the inside,” Christensen said. “For them, the prospect of living day to day, or hour to hour is real.”

And that thought will keep him moving when the miles grow long this summer.

“Those mountain passes in Idaho and the heat and the wind in Kansas will be tough,” Christensen said. “But it’ll be nothing compared to what these people living in poverty face every day.”

Read Christensen’s blog.

There will be a local ride connected to Cycling for Change. On July 7 about 200 riders will participate in the Freedom from Poverty Bike Ride, (read more here) cycling north to Castle Rock to meet up with Christensen and the Cycling for Change team. All the riders will return to Colorado Springs the next day where they’ll be welcomed at the Freedom from Poverty Community Celebration, 1 to 8 p.m. in America the Beautiful Park. There will be food and drink (beer and root beer from Bristol Brewing). Click here to register for the ride.

The Gear Company Shuffle

May 18th, 2010

Columbia is branching out once again. The company, which also owns Mountain Hardwear, Sorel, Montrail and Pacific Trail, has launched a new line of watches and instruments for the outdoors.  Products will feature various combinations of altimeters, barometers, compasses, thermometers, ski timers, interval timers and more.  The initial launch will feature 36 watches in 10 different styles, available in Columbia stores, online, and in outdoor and sporting goods stores.

In other outdoor gear business news, Clarus, a publicly traded investment firm, has bought specialty equipment company Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd., and Gregory Mountain Products, Inc., known for its backpacks.  Black Diamond’s CEO Peter Metcalf will run the new company under the Black Diamond name.
