Bailey HUNDO: The Senators’ Underground Invitational 100 Mile MTB Race

May 17th, 2010

There’s a new 100 mile mountain bike race in Colorado this year and it’s only a month away. The Bailey HUNDO: The Senators’ Underground Invitational 100 Mile MTB Race will be held on June 19th, 2010. If you missed out on the Leadville 100 or other 100 miles mountain bike races across the country, you still have a chance at getting into the Bailey HUNDO.

Sponsored by four Colorado State Senators, the proceeds of the race will not only enhance the singletrack trail system around Bailey, but also promote mountain biking to at-risk youth, and high schoolers around the state by supporting Trips For Kids Denver/Boulder and the newly-founded Colorado High School Cycling League (CHSCL).

This year is a low key race with a field limit of 150. They’ve said they could see allowing 1,000 racers in the future. This year racers will also be self supported. My guess is that in the future there’ll be aid stations with support but I haven’t gotten a answer from them.

Bailey is a great area to mountain bike and they’re working on building more singletrack. The course will feature over 40 miles of singletrack through the Buffalo Creek Trail System and along the Colorado Trail as well as some challenging climbs on dirt roads and jeep trails. With this race very close to the Colorado Front Range and what should be a great course, I can see this race being very popular if organized well.

There’s no set entry fee for the race. It’s a suggested-donation and pledge-based event. A donation or pledge of $100 gets you a commemorative t-shirt designed by a Platte Canyon junior high school student. A donation or pledge of $250 will additionally qualify you to receive an inaugural Bailey HUNDO jersey.

To have a chance to race this in the inaugural race, you must register by this Wednesday, May 19th. They’re calling it a lottery for picking the 150 riders from those that sign-up but much like the Leadville 100 lottery, I think it’ll be a very weighted lottery. On the race application form, they ask if you live in the districts of any of the 4 Colorado Senators that helped make the race happen. They also want to know how much money you can raise and how you can help promote the race. They also want to know if you have the experience to finish a 100 mile self-supported race.

I’ve seen a couple blog posts about the Bailey HUNDO since it was announced a few weeks ago but haven’t heard of anyone that has applied to do it. Have you or someone you know signed up for it?

Ride of Silence 2010

May 15th, 2010

This coming Wednesday, on May 19, 2010 the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn’t aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.

The first ride of Silence was in 2003 in Dallas, Since then it has spread to hundreds of locations across the world. I’ve ridden the Ride of Silence in Colorado Springs 3 of the last 4 years and plan to again this year. If you’re local check out the info for this year’s Colorado Springs Ride of Silence and come join us.

Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Entry eBay Auction

May 14th, 2010
Leadville 100 - Bottom of Columbine Climb

If you didn’t get picked in the Leadville 100 lottery and you still want to do the race after the felony charges drama this week, here’s a chance to get in and help a charity. A Leadville 100 entry is being auctioned on eBay to benefit Arts Street. Normally you shouldn’t buy a Leadville 100 entry on eBay but the race organizers son, Cole, is on the board of directors for Arts Street and is a legitimate entry.

Currently there’s only a day left on the auction. The price is at $521 but the reserve hasn’t been met. Over the last few weeks they sold an additional 25 entries for $2,275 each to benefit the LT100 Legacy Foundation so I’d guess the reserve is a fair amount higher.

Arts Street is a 10 year-old non-profit youth program in Denver that creates opportunities for the youth of Colorado. The opportunities provided are designed to foster the inspiration and education of these youth to become tomorrow’s professionals – supporting the workforce needs. This is achieved by developing and implementing highly diversified career-based, educational programs that incorporate real-world learning, artistic expression and creative thinking.

More On Leadville 100 Felony Charges

May 13th, 2010
Lance Armstrong at Leadville 100 Start

The news about Katie Brazelton giving her Leadville 100 entry to Wendy Lyall and both of them being charged with criminal impersonation has spread outside of the mountain bike world. There a good post on the Ex-Pat Ex-Lawyer blog with what lead up to the charges.

In a letter to the Lake County Sheriff, Leadville 100 organizer Ken Chlouber asked for prosecution on theft of services for the $250 in race fees, $225 in awards, plus racer services, including aid stations, security, and a pre-race banquet. That would be much less severe than the criminal impersonation felony that DA Hurlbert charged them with. It seems that Katie Brazelton may have already lost her job over the incident.

As I said I think that cheating to get into the race is serious but worse in this case because of Wendy finishing 2nd in Katie’s age group. Still being charged with a felony is overblown for something like this.

Some people are complaining that Ken doesn’t enforce his rules consistently. We own an old mining claim in Lake County close to Leadville and we always say it’s still the wild, wild west there. It’s not just that Ken runs the Leadville 100 that way. Even so about 10 times as many people wanted to do the race this year as are allowed in.

The Leadville 100 entry lottery isn’t totally a lottery. Some number of riders appear to get picked and the rest get drawn in the lottery. I know riders that have used a friend’s address in Leadville so they’d get picked. Leadville is small enough that Ken and whoever else does the preferred picking probably know when that is the case but the riders have still gotten into the race.

Good News…If You Love Snow

May 13th, 2010
Visitors Enjoying Fresh-Snow in RMNP

Don’t put away your snowshoes yet.  Rocky Mountain National Park received more than a foot of snow Tuesday night, with more snow forecast. (This picture was taken Wednesday.)   If you haven’t snowshoed at this park, you’re missing out – trails retain deep powder for days after a storm.  My favorite? Loch Vail, that starts at Bear Lake.

And if you’re mourning the end of another ski season, this will lift your spirits:  The Rocky Mountain Superpass is on sale – buy before June 1 for $449 and you get three free lift tickets for friends or family.  The season pass covers unlimited skiing and riding at Copper Mountain and Winter Park and six days at Steamboat.  For info, go to www.skicolorado.com or call  1-800-977-SNOW.

May 12th, 2010
EJ and Jayson Ghost Bikes

The parole hearing for Barbara Thomas was today.  She killed two cyclist a couple years ago. See more about what happened here.

KKTV has reported that she was denied bail. Her lawyer argued for probation only because of his client’s age and poor health.

Snow Delays Colorado Campground Openings

May 12th, 2010
Camping

I know – you’re itching to plan that first camping trip. Before you go, check with the U.S. Forest Service and make sure your favorite campground is open.  Late spring snows have delayed openings at some Colorado campgrounds in the Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands.

Check the status of these campgrounds before you head out:  Kite Lake, Selkirk, Lost Park, Weston Pass, Kenosha Pass, Devil’s Head, Alvarado, Purgatorie, Bear Lake and Blue Lake.

For information, contact the appropriate ranger district:

Toadwork

May 11th, 2010
Boreal Toad

The Colorado Division of Wildlife is looking for volunteers to help search for the elusive boreal toad in the high country.  Volunteers will be trained over two sessions – Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the DOW office in Salida, and May 22 on a field trip to a location known as toad habitat.

Boreal toads are small amphibians that were once common throughout the southern Rockies, but their population has steadily declined over the past two decades. They are now listed as an endangered species in Colorado and New Mexico, and a protected species in Wyoming.  They live between 7,000 and 12,000 feet.

Go here for more information on the boreal toad including a sound bite.

For more information about becoming a volunteer, contact: Raquel Stotler, DOW Area Wildlife Conservation Biologist, at 1-719-530-5526, (raquel.stotler@state.co.us); or Jena Sanchez, DOW Volunteer Coordinator, at 1-719-227-5204, (jena.sanchez@state.co.us).

Felony Charge for Racing Leadville 100 Without Entry

May 10th, 2010
Leadville 100 Start

The Leadville 100 mountain bike race has long made it clear that entries are non-refundable and non-transferable. It’s one of a very few races where I’ve had to show my ID to pick up my race packet. Now race organizer, Ken Clouber, has made it clear just how seriously he takes racing with another person’s entry.

Last year Katie Brazelton was injured and unable to race. Rather than just lose her entry, she gave her entry to her friend Wendy Lyall. I’m not sure how that worked because of the required photo ID check. My guess is that Katie picked up the race packet herself.

During race check-in though they put on a bright green band that must be worn during the race and still be on to pick up awards. Although you have to give your race number to check in the morning of the race, they haven’t checked for my band. During the race I can’t tell that they look for the band so it may have not been noticed if Wendy wasn’t wearing one. In the photo with the Denver Post article there’s something green on her left wrist but it’s not clear enough to tell if it’s the required band.

The switch off may have gone unnoticed but Wendy finished in 9:53:27. That was fast enough to put her in 2nd place in the 40-49 age group even though she was 36. Ken Chlouber received an anonymous tip that it might not have been Katie Brazelton racing.

According to the Denver Post article Rachel Farrett, who finished 3rd didn’t recognize the woman who picked up the prize from the race the day before. Farrett remembers the woman who passed her on the race course had blond hair. The woman who accepted the trophy did not.

After being contacted by Ken and Lake County Sheriff Ed Holte, the women returned the belt buckle, pendant and necklace. Ken didn’t think that was enough since the true 2nd and 3rd place finishers didn’t get to enjoy their accomplishment. He also banned both women from ever competing in the Leadville 100 and now Katie and Wendy have been charged with criminal impersonation, a Class 6 felony.

I think using someone else’s entry is a serious thing and it was much worse in this case because Wendy finished 2nd in an older age group. I’m not sure that USA Cycling has anything in the rules to deal with something like this other than suspending them from other races.

Filling felony charges does seem to be going a bit far. I’ve heard the race received well over 10,000 entries for this year’s race. Last year there were 1,400 entries accepted but I haven’t seen the number for this year yet but I hope it’s not higher. Maybe this case is more about deterring the thousands that didn’t make it in the race lottery from lining up on race day with Lance Armstrong than it is about 2 women from last year’s race.

Possible Parole for Killer of Cyclists

May 9th, 2010
EJ and Jayson Ghost Bikes

I’ve tried writing this post over the last couple weeks and have struggled to write it. On August 6th, 2008, Barbara Thomas turned left in front of 30-year-old Edgar “E.J.” Juarez and 28-year-old Jayson Kilroy on 26th Street. They were both killed.

This was not just an accident. Thomas was taking prescription medications that required her not to drive while taking them. She also was not wearing her glasses required to drive. I’m sure if it was true but the rumor at least was she had just shop lifted at Safeway.

She was sentenced to only 3 years in prison. Now after 11 months she’s up for parole. If it was just an accident, I could maybe see some leniency since she’s 64 and on oxygen. But under the circumstances I don’t think she should be given parole. She could once again be a menace on the streets.

I’ve seen a few different dates but the most reliable seems to be that May 12th will be her parole hearing. It looks like today (Sunday, May 9th) is the final day to comment to the Parole Board. It seems strange for Sunday to be the last day but I’d still send an email or leave a voice message.

You can contact the Parole Board at:
Tim Hand, Deputy Director, Regional Operations
