White Acres Open Space Celebration

April 29th, 2009

White Acres, Colorado Springs
It is finally time to do some celebrating over the White Acres Open Space deal. Yesterday Colorado Springs made the final approval to acquire it for open space. It has been nearly a year since I first attended a TOPS Working Committee meeting on it.

I spoke in favor of it at the Colorado Springs council meeting a couple weeks ago when they voted unanimously for it. Yesterday’s vote was just part of the required process and on the consent calendar. The 2nd vote though does allow a chance for a decision to be changed.

To celebrate the approval there will be a party and picnic this Sunday, May 3rd any time from 1-4 PM. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the afternoon. It will be at the pavilion on White Acres. There will be music, hiking and an art show and sale benefiting White Acres.

The pavilion is just up from the 5-way intersection of South 26th Street, Wheeler, Lower Gold Camp, Bear Creek Road, and Gold Camp Road. Since there is limited parking at the pavilion, please park on the gravel strip on the south side of Lower Gold Camp just east of the intersection. You can see the intersection in my Google map of White Acres.

Because of the limited TOPS funds this year, Friends of Red Rock Canyon and the Palmer Land Trust are cooperating in an effort to raise $75,000 for White Acres by November 15th. Any extra money raised will go toward the $640,000 needed to purchase Section 16 soon after. You can donate now online through the White Acres Pikes Peak Community Foundation Fund.

Waterproof Jackets Guide

April 23rd, 2009

If you’re looking for a rain jacket for your outdoor adventures, there are 3 main kinds of materials. Membranes, coated fabrics and vinyl.

Vinyl is cheap and keeps water out but also does a really job of keeping your sweat in. Membrane fabrics are the most breathable. Coated fabrics breath somewhat but not as well as the membrane fabrics.

The 2 main membrane fabrics are Gore-Tex and eVent. Gore-Tex now comes in a couple different types. I’ve seen lab tests that say that eVent is more breathable than Gore-Tex but probably not by enough to make a big difference in the real world. Gore-Tex and eVent are also very durable because they’re made of 2 or more layers.

If you’re working out at a high heart rate, you’ll still have moisture build up even with Gore-Tex and eVent. Still you shouldn’t get totally soaked and keeping cold water out will help keep you warm.

The advantage of jackets made with coated fabrics is they don’t cost as much. The big name outdoor jacket makers such as North Face, Columbia and Arcteryx use different names for their fabrics. Jackets with coated fabric will become less waterproof as the coating wears off.

Although there are only a few different types of fabrics, the design of the jackets can make a big difference in how well the jacket performs. Many jackets provide vents on the upper back and also zippered armpit vents. Some jackets have elastic around the wrists and others also provide velco so you can better control the fit.

A jacket with a hood will keep water from getting in around the back of the neck. Some hoods are removable. Personally I don’t like the feel of an attached hood when I turn my head. I get a jacket with a removable hood and don’t use it. I have been using the Mountain Hardware Windstopper hat. It’s not ideal for hard rain but rain in Colorado doesn’t generally last too long. I used similar gear on an Alaska expedition and backpacking in rain in Washington and it worked fairly well.

I’ve long used Columbia jackets. They used to fit me well and they warranted them when zippers would break after 4-5 years of hard use. Honestly I wouldn’t have complained if they just told me I had worn the jacket out. The last time I needed a new jacket, the Columbia jackets no longer fit me well.

I ended up getting a North Face Triclimate jacket and really like it. I’ve also used jackets that consist of a separate shell and a fleece liner. I rarely zip them together but I feel they fit better than trying to combine separate fleece and shells.

The great video above describing waterproof jackets is from Webtogs. They carry quality outdoor gear including North Face Jackets in the UK and ship throughout Europe.

Earth Day Should be Every Day

April 22nd, 2009

Today is Earth Day and a day to focus on loving our earth. Big things tend to get the attention but everybody doing little things every day have a huge impact on the earth. Here a few simple things that make a huge difference over time.

  • Commute or run errands by bike
  • Don’t buy bottled water. The bottles use a huge amount of oil and many of them end up in landfills.
  • Use reusable shopping bags. If you need some motivation to switch, take a look at this video
  • Recycle and upcycle
  • Turn off water while brushing teeth
  • Use a programmable thermostat
  • Turn off lights when leaving a room
  • Switch at least your most used lights to CFL
  • Take a walk and pick up trash along the way

Cyclist Leg Shaving Questions and Answers

April 21st, 2009

To Shave or Not to Shave Legs
It’s long been a tradition for male cyclists to shave their legs. I think there are more reasons for mountain bikers to shave their legs but fewer do. Here are answers to some common questions about cyclists and shaving their legs.

Why Do Cyclist and Mountain Bikers Shave Legs?

Most people think that shaving is so cyclists are faster because of better aerodynamics. That really isn’t much of a reason why male cyclists shave their legs. Read Top 5 Reasons Cyclists Shave Their Legs to find out the real reasons.

How to Shave Legs?

When I shave my legs, I’m more into simple than perfect so I just use the electric shaver that I use to shave my face. Coach Levi has a detailed post on how to shave legs and do it better than I do. He even includes a video of the process.

How Much to Shave?

I’ve heard it said to shave up to where whitie tighties fit. Personally I stop a little short of that except I shave nearly to my waist on the outside of the hip. The outside of the hip is a likely place to get road rash and pulling bandages off along with hair is no fun. Once again Coach Levi takes it a step further and explains how to shave based on your reason for shaving your legs.

How Often to Shave?

I’m sure there are individual differences but most guys have stubble on their legs within 3 days of shaving. Even so I don’t shave more than once a week. I also only shave during the summer when I’m riding in shorts. I know a few guys that shave year round but I think most cyclists don’t shave during the winter.

Hardrock 100 Run

April 19th, 2009

Jon Teisher at Hardrock 100
I’m not a runner. I’ve tried but just haven’t been able to get in to it. I admire those that do 100 mile runs and sometimes wish I could do one. With cycling you can coast and recover a bit but not when running.

The Hardrock 100 Endurance Run was July 11th-13th last year. Our local paper did a good article and video on it. I’ve meant to post about them but didn’t get it done until now.

The Hardrock 100 is a brutal running race in the Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. It climbs 11 mountain passes and one 14,000-foot peak for a vertical gain of 32,962 feet. It’s in the area where we camped and I did some long training for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race last year. The last day when we four-wheeled the Alpine Loop, we were on part of the Hardrock 100 course.

Two locals ran it last year. Jon Teisher and Neal Taylor are 2 very different runners. I’ve met both of them and they’re both nice guys.

The Hardrock 100 Run is July 10th and 12th this year. A lottery is used to select 140 runners. Jon made it back in this year and Neal is 45th on the list.

Jon, more commonly known as JT or brownie, attends the Manitou Incline happy hour that I do. JT likes to eat double cheeseburgers and he likes beer. He even will drink beer during long races.

Just over a week ago, JT ran rim to rim and back of the Grand Canyon. He ran 42 miles with over 11,000 vertical feet in 13 hours. His write up is well worth the read.

Neal is the caretaker at Barr Camp and I’ve chatted with him a few times when I’ve hiked to Barr Camp. Neal is a strict vegetarian and rarely drinks. JT thinks Neal would drink more if it wasn’t so hard to get alcohol to Barr Camp.

Mental toughness is a huge part of doing an ultra whether it’s on the bike, running, adventure race or something else. One thing Neal has learned is it will get bad, you will suffer, but you’re not going to die, so keep going. Leadville 100 organizer, Ken Clouber, says finishing hurts for a few hours but quitting hurts for 365 days until you can do the race again. Lance Armstrong said it even stronger by saying pain is temporary but quitting lasts forever.

Important Colorado Spings White Acres Vote Tomorrow

April 13th, 2009

White Acres Near Colorado Springs
Update 4/14/09: White Acres acquisition was passed unanimously by the Colorado Springs City Council. It won’t be effective until the 2nd reading of the ordinance on April 28th but it should just be on the consent calendar. Now Friends of Red Rock Canyon Open Space need to raise $75k by December but the Palmer Foundation is helping out.

The Colorado Springs City Council will vote on purchasing White Acres for open space tomorrow. This is the most important vote. There’s support on council for the purchase but there’s also some uncertainty.

Read through my past White Acres posts for more info about it. The White Acres Google Map shows how it fits in with Red Rock Canyon Open Space and Section 16.

If possible, please come to show your support for White Acres Open Space. The meeting is at the Colorado Springs City Hall April 14th at 1:00 PM. White Acres is the first 2 items of new business on the agenda. There are several other items before new business so it’s hard to tell how soon they’ll get to White Acres.

Fundraising Event

In related news, Pizzeria Rustica will donate the proceeds from its Earth Week Passport to Tuscany” wine dinner toward the White Acres acquisition. The five course dinner will feature five selected wines from Tuscany/Umbria paired with five Tuscan dishes.

WHEN: Monday , April 20 at 6:00 PM

Bike Ride with Phil from the Amazing Race

April 10th, 2009

Phil Keoghan from the Amazing Race TV show is currently riding his bike across America. He left Los Angeles on March 28th and plans to arrive in New York City on May 9th. The last episode of the current Amazing Race airs the following day.

He will average around 100 miles a day on the bike and ride a total of 3500 miles. Currently he is a little over 1,000 miles into the ride. In addition to riding, he’s doing interviews, raising money for MS and much more. You can help make a difference in the fight against MS by donating to Phil’s MS Team.

Phil’s ride schedule is on his website and you can ride along with him. Because of the distance, he’s not riding at race pace but he’s fit and smooth on the bike. Just be sure to print out the waiver and take it with you.

Phil Koeghan from the Amazing Race and His DadPhil is currently riding through Colorado. I drove up to Fairplay, CO yesterday morning to ride with him. I hung out with his wife, Dad and crew for a little while before we started riding. Everyone was very friendly.

The kids from the school came to see Phil Koeghan and were very excited. After Phil talked for a bit to the crowd, it was time for him to ride to Denver.

Phil Koeghan from the Amazing Race and His DadIt was 29 degrees when we rolled out and the wind made it feel much colder. Phil was very friendly although I didn’t get to talk to him much while we were riding. We had such a strong, gusty cross-wind that it really wasn’t safe to ride side by side.

I asked him why he chose to ride for MS. He said his cousin has it. He said he has been into cycling for a long time but has become more involved in it the last few years. Phil and his wife sponsor a U23 cycling team.

Scotty, one of the Amazing Race camera men, is filming Phil’s ride. Josh is along to edit the video and there is a daily video blog. Because of them being on the move so much of the time, the video blog is currently a couple days behind. In addition to his website, you can follow his ride across America on twitter and on Facebook.

Action Wipes and Special Gift Set Winner

April 6th, 2009

Congratulations to Nathaniel for winning the Action Wipes giveaway I announced on my Action Wipes review. Martha Van Inwegen threw in a special gift set on twitter yesterday. If you didn’t win, you can get 15% off Action Wipes with coupon code ultra.

Sounds like Nathaniel will get good use out of the Action Wipes. Below is the comment he used to enter.

I train everyday swimming, running, or biking with most days doing at least two workouts. In order to fit them all in I need to do one in the morning before work and then one after work. I also have a baby due real soon so my time allowed for showers and self cleaning will be drastically shortened to non existent. New baby = no sleep and not much time to train. Being able to use action wipes after I work out would really help me save on time and energy. Plus I won’t be getting all of those weird looks that I get now when I go into the office right after working out. I’ve heard many good things about them just haven’t had the chance to try them out yet. I’ve got plenty of baby wipes stocked up but those stink bad and leave your skin feeling gross.

Nathaniel just send me an email (on in right side bar or on About page) with your address.

2009 Lake Pueblo Arkansas Point Challenge

April 4th, 2009

Mountain Biking at Pueblo Reservoir

Photo from Southern Colorado Trail Builders

The mountain bike race at Pueblo Reservoir has long been a good early season race for Colorado Front Range racers to fine tune their fitness. This years edition is on Sunday, April 26th. You can register online using SportsBaseOnline. Online registration closes April 23rd. The race flyer also has an entry form and more info on the race.

It is once again being put on by the Southern Colorado Trail Builders. They currently don’t have any info on their website and haven’t replied to my email from a few weeks ago. Great Divide Bike & Ski confirmed this week it is on and gave me the info on online registration.

Pueblo Reservoir is a great place to go mountain bike this time of the year. It is generally warmer and dryer than most of the Colorado Front Range. I need to get down there and do some riding with my new Garmin Edge 705.

How to Train? – Bike Handling Skills: Leadville 100 MTB FAQ

April 1st, 2009

Leadville 100 Powerline Descent
This post is part of the Leadville 100 MTB FAQ.

Although training for aerobic fitness is the biggest part of a successful Leadville 100, mountain bike handling skills can give you the extra edge to make your time goal. They can even be the difference between finishing or not. Skills can make the difference between making the official finish cut-off or not.

Being able to descend faster or maintain more of your speed through corners is like free energy. In a 100 mile mountain bike race, you can use all the free energy you can get. As with most things, practice is what will improve your handling skills.

Practice Speed

One way to improve your mountain bike skills is to pick a downhill section with plenty of turns that you can ride in 5-10 minutes. The section doesn’t need to be steep downhill. It can even be rolling as long as you can keep a decent speed.

Ride the section a few times and time yourself. See how much you can improve your time. One thing to focus on is keeping your speed in the turns so you don’t have to accelerate as much as you come out of the turn.

Once you feel comfortable on the section and aren’t improving your time much, pick another section and repeat.

Ride Technical Sections

Another way to improve your mountain bike handling skills is to try riding technical sections on your normal rides even if you don’t think you can. If you don’t make it, try a few times before you continue on. Of course use common sense and don’t do something that is almost certain to cause an injury.

Ride with Others

Riding with others will improve your handling skills especially if they’re better than you. Being with someone else will get your competitiveness going and you’ll try harder without even realizing it. Ride behind someone else and watch to see which lines and techniques they use.
