Extreme Cold Endurance Mountain Biking

February 28th, 2010

This afternoon 50 hardy endurance racers will be heading out into the Alaska wilderness for the Iditarod Trail Invitational. The majority of them are racing the first 350 miles of the Iditarod dog sled race course to finish at McGrath. 9 of them have the goal of going the full 1,100 miles to Nome.

The racers get to choose whether to do the race on bike, ski or foot. Nearly every year it is won by someone on a bike. This year there are 30 mountain bikers, 18 runners and 2 skiers. I’m not sure why so few skiers do it. Any ideas?

Those on bikes use snow bikes. Snow bikes are basically mountain bikes with more clearance for wide tires. Not only are wide tires used but the rims can be twice was wide as normal mountain bike rims. This gives a lot of tire volume allowing tire pressure to be around 5 psi and a large contact area to spread the weight over the snow.

The last couple years I’ve been keeping track of Jill Homer during the race but she’s not doing it this year. This year I’ll be most interested in how my friend Chris Plesko is doing. Of couse I’m also interested in the other racers too.

Chris and I did a moonlight hike of Pikes Peak a couple years ago in the winter. Ok, it started in moonlight and turned into a blizzard in the wee hours of the morning. Since then Chris has finished the brutal 2745 mile Tour Divide from Banff, Alberta to Antelope Wells, NM. Not only did he finish it but he was on a single speed.

The Iditarod Invitational leaderboard is kept updated throughout the race along with some commentary on the blog. I imagine Jill will also be writing some about the Iditarod Invitational on her blog. It looks like Craig Medred plans to be tweeting updates on twitter.

i-gotU gt-120 GPS Logger Review

February 24th, 2010

Since this summer I’ve been using a little GPS logger to record some of my mountain bike rides and hikes. It’s the i-gotU gt-120 GPS Logger from Mobile Action. As you can see in the photo above it’s very small.

Unlike the Garmin Edge 705 that I have for navigating and seeing my speed, distance, etc. while I’m riding, the GPS logger just records for download after the ride. Since I have the Edge 705 you may wonder why I’d use both. I received the i-gotU from Mobile Action so I could review it and ended up finding it very useful.

Since it’s water resistant, I’ve been just throwing it in my jersey pocket or hydration pack along with whatever else I’m carrying. It has a blue rubber bumper that fits around it to help cushion impacts. I haven’t taken any hard falls with it but it’s held up well bouncing around in my pocket.

It’s designed as a travel logger so you can share your adventures. The software that comes with the GPS logger makes it easy to geotag photos you take. If you aren’t familiar with geotagging, it adds GPS coordinates to photo files so services like Flickr can place them on a map.

It’s best to have the time set correctly on the camera since the software places the photos based on time. Even if the time isn’t set correctly, the software that comes with the gt-120 provides an easy way to adjust the time. If you know the time difference, you can enter it or you can drag the slider until it shows the photo in the right spot on the map.

Once photos have been added, you can then easily upload the map and photos to the web. They provide some space free on their @trip site and then you can buy additional space. Photos can be uploaded to @trip, Flickr or Picasa.

Once you’ve uploaded the map, you can share the link with friends or embed the map on your blog as you see below. You can also save the trip to file as a web page in .mhtml format or the Google Earth files as .kml or .kmz. When the map is uploaded to their website, they significantly reduce the number of waypoints so you don’t get as accurate of a route as you get saving it to file.

For me, saving to a Google Earth file is very useful. I used to need a couple software programs to create a map with photos of my rides. Now with the GPS logger and software it’s easy. I do have to do a bit of editing so the paths are right when I put it online. I made this Pueblo Reservoir map using the gt-120 and software.

The gt-120 has plenty of storage with 64,000 waypoints. It can be configured to store a waypoint every second or every several minutes and anything in between. There’s a setting to have it log at a different interval if your speed is higher than a set amount. I’ve been using mine with it set to log every 6 seconds. If my math is correct, that would mean I can store over 100 hours of data before it fills up.

How often a waypoint is saved also affects how long the battery lasts. With it set to log it estimates the battery will last 10 hours. I’ve used it a little longer than that without a recharge without a problem. Setting the logging interval to 12 seconds, gives an estimate of 30 hours of battery life.

The i-gotU GPS logger also is designed to work as a GPS receiver for navigation software. I haven’t tried using it that way so don’t know how it works.

i-gotU gt-120 GPS Logger Likes

  • Small Size
  • Easy to geotag photos
  • Easy to share adventures
  • Reasonably accurate even when in jersey pocket or outer pocket of pack

i-gotU gt-120 GPS Logger Dislikes

  • Charging and downloading data require a special USB cable. It’s probably used to keep dirt and water from getting in port.

  • Blue and red lights that indicate whether the logger is on, locked on satellites, etc. are very hard to see in sunlight.
  • The only charger is the USB cable so you need a computer or an adapter to charge it.
  • Some parts of the software aren’t intuitive

i-gotU gt-120 GPS Logger Specs

  • Dimension: 1.75 x 1.1 x 0.5 inches
  • Weight: 0.7 oz
  • Built-in SiRF StarIII 65nm low-power chipset
  • Built-in GPS patch antenna
  • Built-in flash memory
  • Built-in 230mAh Lithium-ion battery
  • 2 LED for tracking and battery/charger status indication
  • USB 1.1 interface for PC connection
  • Operation temperature: 15 to + 120 degrees Fahrenheit

Ski Area Dangers

Most people are familiar with the ski run rating colors and symbols.

  • Green circle is an easy run
  • Blue square is an intermediate slope
  • Black diamond is a difficult slope
  • Double Black diamond is experts only

CollegeHumor.com has made up some signs that explain what to really expect on each of these slopes. Go there to see the full set of signs.

Follow the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics

February 16th, 2010

The 2010 Winter Olympics kicked off this weekend. It was hard to find the time to watch everything even on the weekend. Now with the work week, it’s hard to take it all in.

Fortunately in today’s digital world, there are options besides sitting in front of TV and watching the Vancouver Winter Olympics on NBC. Besides TV, NBC has videos, articles and more on nbcolympics.com.

There’s a site that lists streaming video of the Winter Olympics. I haven’t checked it yet at a time when anything was live so I’m not sure how well it works.

Twitter is a great way to follow live events. Athletes and spectators along with those watching from home are tweeting about what is happening. There is a list of verified Olympic athletes on twitter.

Winter Olympics Mobile Apps

With the popularity of smartphones, apps have been developed for the Winter Olympics. I have tried out 4 of them on my iPhone.

  • 2010 Winter Sports Lite – The 2010 Winter Sports Lite is the best one that I’ve tried. It also costs the most but is still only $1.99. There’s also a Premium Edition that is $4.99 for a limited time with a regular price of $9.99.

The home screen shows the top 3 news stories, photo highlights and the medal count. There are separate tabs for News, Schedule and Medals. A More tab gives access to the Photo Gallery, Winter Olympics History, Venue and app settings. The history section has a nice summary of each of the past Winter Olympics. The premium version adds videos, live results, push notifications and a hall of fame.

  • Winter Sports Live – Handmark’s Winter Sports Live is available for Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile in addition to the iPhone and is free. It has news and photos but that’s it. It doesn’t have a medal count or venue information. It also has a tab with the paid apps made my Handmark.
  • Cowbell2010 – The Cowbell2010 iPhone and iPod Touch app gets it’s name from having a cowbell to cheer on the athletes whether there spectating or watching from a distance. The cowbell rings when you shake the iPhone or iPod Touch. It’s cool but sounds tinny like the bear bell app. You can choose which flag is shown on the cowbell and the labels on the tabs changes to that country’s language.

Cowbell2010 uses social media for it’s news. It has a twitter feed of Olympic athletes and media. It also has a Live Wall that lets fans with the app post their thoughts on the Games and you can choose to also have it post to twitter and Facebook. With the twitter feed and Live Wall, the Cowbell2010 app is cool but I really wish it had a news feed of articles.

Cowbell2010 also has a real time medal count and a schedule that adjusts to your timezone.

  • 2010Guide – I’ve also installed the 2010Guide – Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games: The Official Mobile Spectator Guide. As it’s name says, it’s a spectator guide. It has good schedule and venue information. The app is tied into the iPhone’s GPS to help you get to the venues. It does have headlines and medal count but doesn’t provide the amount of news that the other apps provide

I’m sure there are other good sites and mobile apps for keeping up with the Winter Olympics. What is the best site or app that you’ve found?

No 24 Hour Indoor Cycling Record this weekend.

February 14th, 2010
Al Smudz February 2010 24 Hour Indoor Cycling Record Attempt

Al Smudz didn’t succeed in his 24 Hour Indoor Cycling record this weekend. Vinnie from SaveGasBurnFat.com was doing great updated throughout the day on the webcast. Ultra rider David Holt was there helping with handoffs. Vinnie and I crewed both for Holt when he attempted RAAM.

Al was riding strong early on but started having bad stomach problems before he hit the 12 hour mark. The stomach problems slowed him and he missed the 200 mile and 12 hour records that Michael Secrest set on his way to setting the 24 Hour Indoor Cycling Record a few years ago.

The last update from Vinnie was 13 hours into Al’s record attempt. He had completed 1891 laps and 293.75 miles. His average speed at that point was 22.58.

Here are a few thoughts from Al after he ended his record attempt.

This is Al. Today wasn’t my day. You chase a dream and you don’t always get there the first shot. Sports are great because…sometimes the agony of defeat is the great motivator. I’m just a working stiff. I do this because I love cycling. I don’t have any sponsors and the only value I get is from looking myself in the mirror and getting the satisfaction that I did my best today. I really wanted to bring the excitement of an event like this to you. Other than the WR is was my second goal. I hoped people could see that ordinary people can be competitive in sports even though they don’t have the genetics to be a pro whatever. It takes goals, discipline, and sacrifice, but its possible. I guess my journey isn’t over. I hope I’ll bring your WR attempt #2.

Thanks for looking in. I haven’t read the event yet but I hear people from all over the word shared the magic. The world needs to see us normal guys dream.

For me. Well its back to the drawing board. I only had something like this happen one time. It was at the Race Across Oregon 2006. That defeat really motivated me for a year, and I was able to come back and win the next to years. My brother had a good observation. He feels my aggressive position made it hard for my heart to send blood to much besides my legs. My stomach didn’t process very well today and my vision was extremely blurry. That points to circulation because my water and carb intake was pretty close to what I wanted. Back to the drawing board. Its been an ugly day, but I’ll live to ride again.

Thanks, Al

In the dirt, endurance mountain mountain bikers are wrapping up their race at the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo.

24 Hour World Record Attempt This Weekend

February 12th, 2010
Al Smudz

Tomorrow, Saturday, Feb 13, Al Smudz of Monroe, Michigan, will attempt to break the UMCA 24-Hour Indoor record of 535.86 miles currently held by Michael Secrest. Secrest average 22.32 mph for 24 hours.

Al is an accomplished ultracyclist having won the Race Across Oregon twice and the Sebring 24-hour once. He has been focused on this record attempt for over a year.

If you are in the Los Angeles area the weekend of February 13th, you are invited to stop by the Home Depot Velodrome. There will also be a webcast during the record attempt. I’m not sure what they’ll be showing besides Al riding in circles hour after hour.

If all goes according to plan, Al will circle the 250-meter track about 3500 times and average close to 23mph.

Where to Stay? – Leadville 100 MTB FAQ

February 12th, 2010
Leadville 100 - Bottom of Columbine Climb

This post is part of the Leadville 100 MTB FAQ.

If you’re like me, you probably won’t be doing a lot of sleeping the night before the Leadville 100 but it’s good to get is much rest as possible. Taking Ambien really helps but I still wake up through the night. Having lodging close to the start/finish some years has allowed me to crawl out of bed as late as possible.

Leadville is a small town and lodging fills up quickly after the lottery results are announced. Some people make reservations before they know whether they’re in as long as they can cancel the reservation. The only chain motel in town is the Super 8.

The Leadville 100 site has a list of lodging in in or near Leadville. If you’re on a budget and don’t mind dormitory style lodging, the Leadville Hostel is a good option. I’ve heard good things about the Columbine Inn and Grand West Resort.

A couple years I’ve camped at the Sugar Loafin’ Campground. You have to make reservations early to get an RV spot. At least in the past they’ve had an overflow tent area so they’ve been available closer to the race but one year they were full even for tents. There are also several National Forest campgrounds around Turquoise Lake. The Leadville RV Corral is located right at the edge of town but just looks like a bunch of RV spots lined up right next to each other.

If everything is full in Leadville, there are some nice B&B;’s in the town of Twin Lakes about 20 miles away. The town is on the far end of the lakes away from the race course. Ores & Mine B&B; is closer to Leadville and right on the race course where the paved road drops down near the Twin Lakes Dam. We stayed there after the race once and it was very nice.

Copper mountain is only a couple miles farther away in the opposite direction from the town of Twin Lakes. It should be less than a 30 minute drive. Because of the ski area there are several lodging options there.

Buy Your Way Into the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race

February 11th, 2010

Bikes Laid Out for Leadville 100 Start

If you got notified this week that you didn’t get picked in the Leadville 100 lottery, don’t despair. If you have an extra $975 and maybe some quick phone call skills, you can still get in this year.

Monday, February 15th, at 9 AM mountain time, registration for the Carmichael Training System camps will open and must be done by phone. There are 3 different weekend camps. I don’t know how many spots are available in each camp but in his newsletter today, Chris Carmichael said he expects them to fill up before the end of Monday.

The cost of the 2 day camps is $1250 and includes the Leadville 100 entry fee. Of course the extra $975 gets you 2 days with top notch coaches and time riding the Leadville 100 course.

One interesting thing about the camps is you can’t register for them unless you registered for the Leadville 100. It sounds like most of the slots are for people that got denied entry and you’ll have to provide proof you were denied entry. There will also be a limited number of spots for those that did get accepted into the race.
