State Games of America

July 25th, 2007

The State Games of America is August 2nd – 5th here in Colorado Springs. There will be a road race and time trial and mountain bike race. Pikes Peak Velo is helping out with the cycling events and I’ll be helping with registration for the road race on Saturday the 4th.

Normally you have to qualify to do participate in the State Games of America but Colorado residents don’t have to qualify.

Here’s the eligibility details. In order to qualify for the State Games of America, participants must have won a gold, silver or bronze medal in a SGA sport in their local State Games in a qualifying year (2005 or 2006 Summer, 2006 or 2007 Winter), won a medal in the 2005 State Games of America or be residents of Colorado for at least 30 days prior to competition. College students, U.S. military personnel and their families who are stationed in Colorado, are also eligible to participate.

Lance Armstrong Racing the Leadville 100

July 10th, 2007

Leadville 100 MTB Start

Update: Lance didn’t race in 2007 but did in 2008. See videos of Lance and Dave Wiens.

There’s no official word yet but everything points to Lance Armstrong racing the Leadville 100 mountain bike race on August 11th. In December he said he had a scheduling conflict and bailed on doing the race.

In April my doctor told me that a Leadville local had told him that Lance was doing the race on a new Trek bike. A little over a week ago he rode 45 miles of the Leadville 100 course with Chris Carmichael. From what I can tell, they started in Leadville and rode to the bottom of the Powerline or a little farther and then rode back.

Today someone posted to the Leadville 100 Yahoo group, that Lance was going to be here in Colorado Springs 2 days before the race for a charity event. I tracked down that he’ll doing a fundraiser for Kids on Bikes at the Broadmoor Hotel the evening of August 9th after doing 2 kid’s bike rides in the afternoon. The timing of the fundraiser here is perfect for him to be in Leadville for the race. We’re less than a 3 hour drive away from Leadville.

Floyd Landis still says he’s still racing the Leadville 100. Unless he’s in a lot better shape than he was at the Vail Teva Mountain games he won’t be a threat to Lance for the win. I have my doubts that Lance is in the kind of shape either to win over Dave Wiens but it seems we have a good chance at finding out.

Update: A Bicycling article says Lance is doing Leadville.

Lance Rides Part of Leadville 100 Course

July 6th, 2007

Update: he didn’t race in 2007 but Lance Armstrong has entered for 2008.

On July 1st, Lance Armstrong rode 45 miles of the Leadville 100 mountain bike course with his long time coach, Chris Carmichael. Carmichael says that Lance is looking fit and riding well off-road.

Lance bailed on doing the race and claimed he had a scheduling conflict just after Floyd Landis said he was also doing the race. A couple months ago my doctor said that he had heard Lance was still doing the Leadville 100. Here’s what Carmichael had to say about it.

Of course, now that he’s ridden part of the course, everyone wants to know if he’s going to race the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race on August 11. I don’t know, yet. He liked what he saw and was impressed by how hard some of the climbs are, but his schedule is pretty packed. He originally had to cancel his plans to do Leadville because of a schedule conflict, and it remains to be seen whether he’d be able to squeeze it in somehow. I’ll keep you posted.

Floyd Landis Still Plans to Race Leadville 100

June 26th, 2007
Leadville 100 MTB Start

In an rticle in the Rocky Mountain News today, Floyd Landis says he still plans on racing the Leadville 100 mountain bike race on August 11th. He hopes to hopes to be better at Leadville than he did Teva Mountain Games earlier this month in Vail.

Ken Chlouber confirmed that he runs that race as a NORBA sanctioned event because of the insurance they provide. He says if Landis is suspended and can’t race NORBA he’ll drop NORBA and get insurance elsewhere. Now the question is, will Lance show up too?

24 Hours of E-ROCK

June 3rd, 2007

24 Hours of E-ROCK
Yesterday after riding to Monument with the kids in the trailer and having lunch with friends, Julie took the kids home in the car. I then rode on up to the Greenland Open Space to check out the 24 Hours of E-ROCK.

It had started 6:30 PM on Friday so they had been racing about 21 hours when I got there. Where I came in from the Santa Fe Trail was on the far end of the course. I rode a lap and took some pictures of the racers and the start finish/area.

I had planned on racing the 24 Hours of E-ROCK solo back when I thought I would be in shape. I actually have a lot of mixed feelings about racing it. It’s about 30 miles from my house which is very nice. It also is a power course which would be good for me. The problem is it isn’t really a mountain bike course. I saw somebody riding a cross bike which is the right bike for the course. I’d at least go full rigid on a mountain bike. It’s also only an 8 mile course which I think is too short even if it had technical sections.

It really didn’t look like anybody was very fast. Of course it was 21 hours into the race but still at that point in the 24 Hours of Moab, I’m getting passed by the Pros like I’m stopped.

Edward Miller's Townie BikeThe solo class was won this year by Edward Miller, the son of another Pikes Peak Velo member. It was his first 24 hour solo race and he was riding a townie bike. He put in 26 laps. I think that’s impressive! Dave Nice was also racing. I looked for him but didn’t see him. It doesn’t look like he had a very good race as he only got 12 laps in. Final results have been posted.

To give some comparison in competitiveness of this years solo class compared to last year, my friend and co-worker, James won the solo class with 37 laps in 2006. He was self supported most of the time and lost time during the night switching stuff out. James has also done the Leadville 100 in under 8 hours! My long time friend Larry and one of the few riders that will accompany me on some of my long rides, finished 2nd last year with 37 laps. When I’m fit and on the right course, I’m competitive with both James and Larry.

Why You Should Always Strap Your Wheels on a Roof Rack

May 28th, 2007

You should always strap your wheels when you but your bike on a roof rack. Depending on what brand and style of bike mount you have, you generally either take the front wheel off and attache the fork or you leave the front wheel on and an arm attaches to your bike frame. Then there are straps to fasten your rear wheel or both wheels depending on the style.

You may think it’s too much bother to fasten the wheel straps. I always try to make sure they’re strapped. On our drive to Grand Junction to ride the Kokopelli Trail, I was reminded of why I do. I was cruising along on I-70 just west of Avon going about 80 mph. I heard a thunk on the roof. It’s never a sound you want to hear with bikes on the roof.

I quickly got off on the shoulder and stopped. I got out and Kent’s bike was leaning over about 60 degrees. Kent likes to jump off big drops and ride technical stuff. I’m not sure I’d quite call his bike a freeride bike but it’s closer to that than a XC race bike. It was a bit of a stretch to get the arm on my Thule Big Mouth mount to attach to his downtube. The jaw didn’t close as far as it does on my bike but I didn’t think more about it.

What I didn’t know was the bolt that holds the tray to the part that attaches to the front bar had come loose. It’s probably been 3-4 years since I put it together. The wind pressure from driving had caused the tray and bike to slide back so the jaw no longer reached the frame. Even though the jaw wasn’t totally shut when I had put it on I couldn’t see how the bike could fall over. I also never thought it would slide back and out of the jaw. If it wasn’t for the wheel straps, Kent’s bike would have been bouncing down I-70 at 80 mph.

I used to fork mount my Tommasini road bike. A few years ago, I had the fork come out of the mount a little farther west on I-70. It actually came out twice before I got the Big Mouth. The problem was the fork dropouts are chromed with no “lawyer tab”. No matter how tight I tightened the fork mount, the fork would slower work its way out. Both times it happened to my Tommasini, the rear wheel strap kept the bike on the roof instead of falling on the highway.

Lance Armstrong Might Still Race Leadville 100

April 22nd, 2007
Leadville 100 MTB Start

Update: he didn’t race in 2007 but Lance Armstrong has entered for 2008.

In November Lance Armstrong said he was going to race the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race this year. Then in mid December Floyd Landis said he was also doing the Leadville 100. The end of December Lance claimed to have a scheduling conflict and wasn’t going to be able to race the Leadville 100.

When the entrant list for this year’s Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race was released in February, neither Floyd nor Lance were on the list. Floyd has the Leadville 100 logo on his blog (no longer active). The April 16th VeloNews has an article about Floyd and it says he is still doing the Leadville 100.

Friday I went in to my doctor because my back was hurting from the SI join in my hip being locked up. He has a place in Leadville and goes up there quite a bit. The last time he was up there he was talking to his friend that lives there and is racing the Leadville 100 this year. His friend said that Lance is planning to race the Leadville 100 this year. Trek has some new bike that they want him to ride. My doctor didn’t know what bike it is and whether it’s one that’s already available.

I still think it would be really cool if both Floyd and Lance would race this year. There’s the issue of Floyd’s doping case and I haven’t been able to find anything anywhere else to confirm that Lance is planning to race. Also having two big names there could certainly impact the great atmosphere of the race.

Update: Lance didn’t race but Floyd Landis finished 2nd

Floyd Landis Coming to Colorado Springs

April 1st, 2007

Word from the local Bicycle Village is that Floyd Landis will be having a Town Hall Q&A; sometime in May. The date is still being worked out. My guess is it’ll be similar to the one they did at their Westminster store.

By the way, the Leadville 100 logo is on Floyd’s blog even though he isn’t on the 2007 Leadville 100 entrant list.

Susitna 100 Results

February 20th, 2007

The Susitna 100 standings were updated regularly during the race. Now they are ordered by finish with the winners of each division highlighted. Pete Basinger won the overall. I raced with him in the 2003 Fireweed 400. He was ahead of me for the first half but I caught him soon after the turn around in Valdez. We were back in forth in Keystone Canyon. I passed him one last time as we started up Thompson Pass. His crew of 2 young women kept leap frogging ahead and flirting with me. It kept me pushing hard because I figured Pete wasn’t far behind. It took several hours before I didn’t see them anymore. Pete finished 33 minutes behind me.

Jill finished in 20 hours and 50 minutes to be the 3rd woman finisher. She’s already written 3 posts about the experience and plans to write more. First post, 2nd post and 3rd post.

Since John Stamstad was entered, I assumed he would be on a bike. Instead he was on foot. He finished 2nd in the foot division. Jill’s boyfriend Geoff won and set a new course record. It’s pretty amazing because 2 weeks before he was sure he had a stress fracture in his foot and didn’t think he’d even be able to do the race. I guess it just forced him to be well rested for the race.

Susitna 100 Starts Tomorrow

February 16th, 2007

The Susitna 100 starts tomorrow. It’s a 100 mile race on the snow in Alaska. You can choose to mountain bike, ski, or travel by foot. You have until the morning check in to decide based on conditions which mode of travel you want to use.

Jill that lives in Juneau is doing it for the second time. She always has great posts about her rides along with pictures of the awesome scenery. John Stamstad is on the start list. I haven’t seen anything about him racing in a long time. In ultra mountain biking, he’s known for eating Spam and Twinkies during races. I remember one year at the 24 Hours of Moab, he lapped me during the night and I asked him how it was going. He said it would be better if he would quit throwing up. I didn’t say much but I thought how much better of a racer he could be if he would use some good fuel. Even with what he ate he generally did really well. I think 24 Hours of Moab is one of the few races that I didn’t win even though he did it at least a couple times.

The following weekend is the Iditarod Trail Invitational. It has pretty much the same rules but you have a choice between 350 or 1100 miles. My friend has done it and has tried talking me into it. Sometimes I really start thinking about doing it but then I come to my senses.
