Updates Pro XCT Report | Short Track Report | CTS Sand Creek International Classic info with course photos | Sand Creek Mountain Bike Series Schedule

Sand Creek Sports brought mountain bike racing back to Colorado Springs this year. They had great races at both Bear Creek Park and Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

They are making mountain bike racing even bigger in Colorado Springs in 2009. Today the 2009 USA Cycling Pro Cross Country Mountain Bike Tour (ProXCT) was announced. It is a 7 race professional cross country mountain bike series designed to recognize the top off-road racers in America. More series details are in USA Cycling’s press release.

As part of the series, Sand Creek Sports is putting on the Carmichael Training Systems Sand Creek International Classic on June 13th. At this point I don’t know what course they plan to use. I’ll post more as I get some details.

In addition to the ProXCT race, there are plans to hold 4 Wednesday night races and 3 weekend races. I’m not sure if the ProXCT race is included as one of the weekend races. Dates and venues for the races are still being finalized.

Complete ProXCT schedule

  • March 29: U.S. Cup – Fontana, Calif.
  • April 19: Sea Otter Classic – Monterey, Calif.
  • May 31: Bump N’ Grind – Birmingham, Ala.
  • June 13: Carmichael Training Systems Sand Creek International Classic – Colorado Springs, Colo.
  • August 8: U.S. Cup – Mount Snow, West Dover, Vt.
  • August 15: Yankee Clipper at Windham Mountain, Windham, N.Y.
  • September 26: USA Cycling Pro Cross Country Mountain Bike Tour Finals, Las Vegas, Nev.

White Acres Annexation Pre-Application Meetting

December 4th, 2008

White Acres Annexation Meeting

White Acres, Colorado SpringsLast night I went to the pre-application meeting for annexing White Acres. Read my post on White Acres from a couple days ago to see video and learn more about it.

City council rejected buying White Acres for open space during a closed session in September. Howard says he and the church would still rather see the land left as open space. He said even if they submit the annexation application, they will pull it if something can still be worked out for open space. Of course the church and Infinity want to get as much money as they can.

White Acres, Colorado SpringsI believe the church would like to see it open space. Infinity is just doing business. City council made their decision behind closed doors so we don’t know their side of the story. Somehow though it feels like Infinity is trying to force something.

David Litzelman from city planning talked about the process for annexation. John Maynard from NES, Inc. spoke about their preliminary look at how the land could be developed. Paul Howard from Infinity Land Corporation, half owner of the property, talked about the open space negotiations and responded to most of the questions. Although there was a representative from Bethany Baptist Church, the long time owner, in the audience, he didn’t speak.

The Development Plan

White Acres, Colorado SpringsThe plan they are talking about would have townhomes near the 5 way stop at 26th, Gold Camp and Bear Creek Road. Currently there’s a house on the corner. Howard said something about 6-8 units. I’m not sure how many townhomes would be in a unit although I’ve seen a number 16-22 total townhomes.

Up the hillside toward the south would be single family homes. Currently there’s a pavilion in this area. There would be approximately 27 lots that would be around 1/2 acre.

They wouldn’t be able to develop the hogback because of the city’s hillside ordinance. They’d be willing to leave the area on the backside open space. Howard didn’t know if it would be given to city parks or how it would be managed.

Peoples Concerns

White Acres, Colorado SpringsBesides the obvious impact to the views and wildlife, peoples biggest concerns were traffic and water. Gold Camp Road the east would be able to handle traffic but I don’t see 26th being able to handle much traffic. There were questions both about water for the homes and also how runoff would impact the surrounding area. Someone brought up a concern about increased risk of a brush fire and greater impact if there is one.

I asked what Infinity would do if the city council rejected annexation. Howard said they would go to El Paso county with development.

If the property isn’t inside city limits, I don’t believe Colorado Springs Utilities is required to supply water. It seems it could be difficult to develop it without annexation. I don’t know much about development so does a reader have any insights on it?

Price Negotiations

White Acres, Colorado SpringsAccording to Howard, the city had the property appraised by a Denver company in March. That appraisal was $800,000. Infinity thought that was too low and wanted another appraisal. An appraisal in July came in at $2.1 million. He said they have a bank appraisal for $3.2 million. He said they would have sold White Acres for $1.375 million.

Even at $1.375 million, the land would be $29,000 an acre. The city paid $16,000 an acre for Red Rocks Canyon Open Space. Howard said that less of Red Rocks would have been able to be developed so they aren’t asking that much.

How You Can Help

  • Add your name to the Save White Acres petition (no longer active). They will be giving the list to the city.
  • Help spread the word that this land is about to be developed. Many people don’t know it’s private property and about to be developed.
  • Email Chris Lieber (no longer works for city) of TOPS and city parks

White Acres to be Developed

December 1st, 2008

White Acres, Colorado SpringsIt had been a while since I’d heard much on White Acres. It’s a section of land for sale bordering Red Rock Canyon Open Space and Section 16. The video above really shows what a beautiful area it is. I also posted several photos of White Acres the beginning of June.

I attended a TOPS meeting in May for public input on buying it for open space. At the meeting in May, no cost for the property was discussed. According to an article in the November 20th Westside Pioneer, Bethany Baptist Church and Infinity Land Corporation wanted substantially more than the $16,000 an acre paid for Red Rock Open Space.

The city wasn’t willing to pay the asking price so plans are going forward to develop it. They’re also asking the city to annex the property. It seems that allows more houses to be built than if it remained outside city limits.

The plan is for 16-22 townhomes along Gold Camp Road. Approximately 27 single family homes would be built on the backside of the ridge and be visible from Section 16 and Red Rock Canyon Open Space. The ridgeline and hogback would be left undeveloped.

On the map to the left from Friends of Red Rock Canyon, Gold Camp road is the curved border on the east side of White Acres. The curved part starts at the 5 way stop sign on 26th street on the popular bike ride up 26th and Gold Camp.

How You Can Help

  • There’s a meeting for public comment this Wednesday evening, December 3rd, from 6 to 8 at Midland Elementary School, 2110 West Broadway Street. I plan to be there.
  • Add your name to the Save White Acres petition (no longer active). They will be giving the list to the city.
  • Help spread the word that this land is about to be developed. Many people don’t know it’s private property and about to be developed.

Sand Creek Fall Mountain Bike Race

October 28th, 2008

About The Shot Photography

The Sand Creek Sports fall mountain bike race at Cheyenne Mountain State Park was a week and a half ago. I was too busy playing lumberjack to go to it.

I had written that we could be buried in snow or it could be sunny and 80 degrees. We weren’t far from the 80 degrees. It was a beautiful, sunny day with temperatures in the 70’s.

From the course description, it sounded like a tough course and the finish times show it was. Local pro and one of my former teammates, Matt Simmons, found out he has lost some of his race fitness since he quit training hard 6 weeks ago.

About The Shot Photography has lots of photos of the racers. They show how cool Cheyenne Mountain State Park is.

2008 24 Hours of Moab Day 2

October 23rd, 2008

Roan Exelby on lap 16 at the 2008 24 Hours of Moab

Roan Exelby on lap 16

Update 10/27: I’ve created a page for my 2008 24 Hours of Moab photos.

When I woke up Sunday morning, it was cloudy and cold but none of the wind from the day before. It’s always cold there first thing in the morning. Even the year I raced when it was in the 80’s Saturday afternoon, it got cold at night.

Breakfast at the 24 Hours of Moab

Breakfast at the 24 Hours of Moab

I headed over to the the big check-in tents to check the RealTime Scoring and get something to eat. The lead solo riders of Josh Tostado, Tinker Juarez and Roan Exelby had continued to hammer out the laps while I slept.

Just after I posted my Day 1 report, I checked the results and saw that Chris Eatough hadn’t headed out when he came in at 10:21 PM. I had seen him on that lap. He looked good and had opened a couple minute lead over Tinker. The lap before I had seen both of them riding together.

I heard that Eatough had gone to the medical tent and that he wasn’t feeling good. I never heard what they thought was going on but he was feeling better in the morning. On Tostado’s last lap, I heard a couple guys riding with him saying it was probably because he was so far behind Tostado. Some riders are that way but I’ve never heard anything about Eatough being like that.

Jari Kirkland, Women’s Solo winner on her 13th lap

After breakfast I headed out and spent a few hours on the first part of the course. Not surprisingly most of the team riders still looked fairly good. Even the top solo riders were looking good. Some of the other solo riders looked like zombies which is at least how I felt Sunday mornings when I raced there.

Tinker Juarez on Sunday Morning at the 24 Hours of Moab

Tinker Still Looking Strong on Lap 16

Although Tinker was still looking good on his last lap, he said in his race report that he was beat up. His knee was hurting and he took way too many Advils. Because the top guys make it look so easy, it’s easy to forgot that they suffer too.

This was the first time I’ve been to the 24 Hours of Moab since I last raced it solo in 2001. It’s a good course for me in a lot of ways but all 4 times I raced it I had an asthma attack. It didn’t seem to be so much from all the dust but from the campfire smoke. I’d do fine until I’d come through the pits around day break. By then there was always plenty of smoke and my lungs would shut down.

Being there this year certainly made me want to go back and race it again. Since I started taking Xolair, I haven’t had any bad asthma attacks. Maybe I’d be alright racing there now.

The best I’ve done at the 24 Hours of Moab is 13 laps. Since 2001 I’ve learned a lot about staying awake and how to eat. With more experience and being able to breathe better, I think I could do 14 laps. As competitive as it’s gotten, it probably wouldn’t get me in the top 5 but I might be close. First I have lots of weight to lose and lots of training to do.

24 Hours of Moab Photo Update

October 22nd, 2008

Travis Histed from Fema Response Flying Through Sand

Update 10/27: I’ve created a page for my 2008 24 Hours of Moab photos.

I’ve been busy going through all the photos I took at the 24 Hours of Moab. I know I’ve already used a few different ways to display photos. I’ve now set up a customized SmugMug account. So far I’m really excited about the way it looks and everything that can be done with the photos. The thumbnails look good and the navigation is easy. You can view the photos in 7 different different sizes. If they’re geotagged, you can also view where they were taken on Google Maps.

So far I’ve uploaded over 400 photos from Saturday. The 1st album is from the start and the riders coming into the check-in tent. The 2nd album is from out on the course at sunset. I manually geotagged them so the locations aren’t exact but will give you a pretty good idea where I was when I took them.

I’ve found a couple other good albums on SmugMug. My favorite one is from Xavier Fane. The other is also very good and is from Jen Curry.

Superhuman Magazine also produced another one of their great videos. It shows how rough some sections are. It also shows a great shot of a rider riding down Nose Dive.

24 Hours of Moab Day 1

October 12th, 2008

The first day of the 24 Hours of Moab has been very windy but the wind starting calming a little before dark.   At the end of the 1st lap, 4 of the top 10 were solo riders.  Josh Tostado was the 3rd rider to finish lap one.  He has continued to build his lead in the solo race with Chris Eatough and Tinker Juarez chasing.

Here are a few of the photos I’ve taken so far. I have plenty more to upload but it will probably take a few days after I get back.

Update 10/27: I’ve created a page for my 2008 24 Hours of Moab photos.

Update 10/14: I think I took over 2,000 pictures at the 24 Hours of Moab. I still haven’t downloaded the ones I took on Sunday.

Lance Armstrong Confirms Plan to Win 8th Tour de France

September 9th, 2008

Today a video was posted on LiveStrong.com with Lance confirming he plans to come back and win an 8th Tour de France. The Vanity Fair article that VeloNews said was to announce his comeback has also been posted online.

In the Vanity Fair article he says he had an epiphany at the Leadville 100. Even before that he must have been thinking about a comeback because he had already asked to be put back in the out-of-competition testing pool.

The impetus to come back, he says, sprang upon him quite unexpectedly over the summer, in Colorado. Armstrong had an epiphany on August 9 after placing second at the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain-Bike Race—a 100-mile “Race Across the Sky,” which climbs to more than 14,000 feet. That ascent, cycling upward in a crosscurrent, tripped something primal in him. “It wasn’t a lightbulb going off,” he says, but a realization, combined with a gradual frustration “with the rhetoric coming out of the Tour de France. Not just the Tour on TV but the domestic press, the international press, the pace, the speeds at which participants rode. It’s not a secret. I mean, the pace was slow.

“Then Leadville, this kind of obscure bike race, totally kick-started my engine. For me it’s always been about the process.… The process of getting there is the best part. You start the season a little out of shape, a little heavy. You get in better shape. You lose some weight. I mean you’re just crafting this perfect program. For several weeks I [had] trained [for Leadville] and went riding by myself. Obviously beautiful territory and fresh air, just feeling fit, losing weight, getting strong—living a very healthy lifestyle. I thought, This might be fun to try again.”

One correction to that quote from the Vanity Fair article is that the high point of the Leadville 100 is 12,600 feet instead of over 14,000 feet. The 14,000 number was also in articles when it was announced he was racing at the Leadville 100. It could be referring to the cumulative climbing during the race. I think there’s about 13,000 feet of climbing but I’ve also heard numbers higher than 14,000.

The Vanity Fair article addresses the question of why he’s coming back. He says it’s all about increasing cancer awareness and funding. He will announce an international LIVESTRONG strategy on September 24th in New York City at the Clinton Global Initiative.

Those close to him at the Lance Armstrong Foundation also realize it’s a huge risk. Even if he wins the Tour, it may not be a big deal to a lot of people. If he doesn’t win, people may use that to say he doped in the past to win.

Lance Armstrong’s Trek Top Fuel 9.8 for the 2008 Leadville 100

Update: Lance posted this photo of his 2009 Leadville 100 bike.

Before the Leadville 100 mountain bike race, there was some buzz about Lance Armstrong’s sweet bike after VeloNews had a short article on it. It’s full suspension and was under 22 pounds without bottle cages, computer and seat pack. Even with those is was still under 23 pounds.

I got a close look at it the afternoon before the race. The engine is more important but I sure wouldn’t complain if I had his bike. Here are the specs for Lance’s Trek Top Fuel 9.8 for the 2008 Leadville 100 according to Ben Coates post on the Trek blog and the info he provided to VeloNews.

For those of you that want to drool a bit more, here are some closer pictures of the components.

Dave Wiens and Lance Armstrong Leadville Videos

August 16th, 2008

August 9th, 2008, Lance Armstrong competed in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race. Even most non-cyclists know who Lance is. Five time defending Leadville 100 champ, Dave Wiens, is less well known.

Even though Dave Wiens is less well known than Lance, he had a very successful mountain bike career. He won 2 World Cup races and numerous NORBA races. Dave was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2000.

During the early 90s, I saw Dave at many races in Colorado. Before mountain biking grew in popularity, often the Pros and Experts would start together and I’d be close to him on the start line.

Dave’s wife, Susan DeMattei, was also a top pro mountain biker. In 1996 she won a bronze medal at the Olympics in Atlanta. In 1994 she won the silver medal at Worlds. She was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1997.

Here are several videos of what became a race between Dave Wiens and Lance. Course conditions were great from rain leading up to the race. With the good course conditions and by working together they shattered the course record Wiens set in 2007 when Floyd Landis raced.
