Blog Feed Switched to Full Posts

April 29th, 2008

This post is to test switching the blog feed to full posts from partial posts. I don’t like partial posts in feeds anymore than any one else. The reason I had stayed with partial posts was the way I’ve done something caused problems in full posts. I’ve wanted to fix it for a long time but it never made it to the top of the list. Lately it’s been bugging me too much and so I spent the few hours to fix it. Of course that’s if I don’t find out there’s a problem once I post this.

Due to not getting something configured correctly when I changed servers over the weekend, the feeds for this blog and my deals blog weren’t being updated. I believe the problem is now fixed.

Is anything else broken?

Greg LeMond’s Air Force Academy Speech

April 20th, 2008

Greg LeMond spoke at a fundraiser at the Air Force Academy last night. It was only $15 for USA Cycling members. I was considering going but with everything else I have going on I decided not to.

Did anyone else go? The only thing I’ve found about it was an opinion column in The Gazette.

I used to be a big fan of LeMond. When he was winning the Tour de France, was when I was really getting into cycling. I dreamed of becoming like him.

The last few years, LeMond seems to have become bitter. He’s squabbled with Lance Armstrong and accused him of doping. He accused Floyd Landis of doping. LeMond tries making it sound like he won everything clean. Cycling has a long history of doping even much farther back than LeMond. I’d like to think he won clean just like I’d like to think Armstrong and Landis were clean. Unfortunately with all the doping scandals of the last few years, I don’t think many if any top pros raced clean. There’s also the fight between LeMond and Trek.

LeMond was in town training and checking out the velodrome for a possible hour record. I think it was 1991. My friend figured out he was staying at the Broadmoor hotel. He saw him leave on his bike mid morning one day. The next day we just happened to be casually riding around the hotel about the same time.

LeMond came out and headed out for a ride. He kept messing with his shoes and we caught up to him and never let on we knew who he was. After riding with him for to the edge of town, he explained that the he was going to use the motorcycle in front of us to do some motor pacing. He said he’d be going very fast and would be riding very close to the motorcycle. He asked us to not stay with him.

Later that day, we found him at the velodrome. After he was finished training, I was able to get a picture with him. I haven’t seen it in a while. He also autographed my foam helmet. I still have the helmet in a box.

Colorado College Criterium

April 20th, 2008

Colorado College Criterium Cat 3/4
Yesterday I spun down to watch the criterium at Colorado College for a little bit. I got there during the cat 3/4 race. A couple of my teammates were racing but unfortunately the got lapped and pulled just after I got there.

Colorado College Criterium WomenI stayed for the finish of the cat 3/4 and then watched the first few laps of the womens race. The men had stayed together as a fairly big pack but the women totally blew apart by the 3rd lap. The leader had such a big gap it didn’t seem there was a chance of her getting caught.

I don’t know if they had safety concerns but they ran the course in reverse of past years. There had been a few crashes after the downhill by the Werner Center. This years course was very non-technical.

I had always enjoyed watching the race on the steep will with the S curve to the south of the Fine Arts Center. However, I never enjoyed it when I was racing. They didn’t go down that hill but went a block to the south and came down a gentler hill.

Server Move Happened Today

April 19th, 2008

As I had mentioned a couple weeks ago when the hard drive crashed on my computer, I was also looking for a new host for this website. There were intermittent problems of pages loading too slow. This was most noticeable on the cycling and outdoor gear pages.

I’ve been working hard over the last couple weeks to move to a different hosting company. I’ve been testing and making tweaks to get everything to run on the new server. Today I switched the site over.

Although I’ve done my best to check that everything is working, it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s something that’s not. Please let me know if you find something missing or isn’t working right.

Local MTB and Road Racing This Weekend

April 16th, 2008

Colorado College Criterium 2007

Update 4/4/09: Info on 2009 Lake Pueblo Arkansas Point Challenge

I’m slow getting this posted but we have both mountain bike and road racing this weekend.

The Lake Pueblo Arkansas Point Challenge is Sunday. Once again Vance’s Bicycle World is one of the sponsors. Vance was a great sponsor for Pikes Peak Velo many years ago when I was doing the shorter mountain bike races.

On the road, there are both collegiate and USA Cycling races. Saturday morning there are individual and team time trials at the Air Force Academy. Saturday afternoon is the Colorado College criterium. The Air Force Academy road is on Sunday.

If you don’t race, the Colorado College criterium would be excellent for watching. Since the course is short, you get to see the riders come by every few minutes. I like watching on the hill just south of the Fine Arts Center. If you’re in Pueblo, there are probably some good places to watch the MTB race but I don’t know the course. Time trials generally aren’t very much fun to watch. The road race would be OK for watching but you don’t see the riders very much.

Quick Weather Change Makes Sign Seem Wrong

April 16th, 2008

It’s a little hard to tell without clicking for a bigger image, but the highway sign says wildfire. The 2nd part of the message was Hwy 115 closed. I took the picture soon after 6 PM.

Yesterday it was in the 70s and a couple brush fires started. There were big plumes of smoke to the south. Highway 115 was closed as were some highways to the southeast from another fire. 3 Firefighters died fighting the fires.

This morning it was sunny but a little cool. This afternoon a sloppy spring snowstorm moved in. According to a report on The Gazette tonight, the snow has allowed residents to return home along Highway 115.

Historic Dewey Bridge on Kokopelli Trail Burns

April 7th, 2008

Old Dewey Bridge Burning

Old Dewey Bridge in May 2007A 7-year-old boy playing with matches ignited a brush fire yesterday that destroyed the Old Dewey Bridge that is part of the Kokopelli Trail from Fruita to Moab. The suspension bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1916 and was the state’s longest bridge without supports in the waterway it crossed.

Old Dewey Bridge in May 2007The Dewey Bridge was within sight of the new bridge on Utah Highway 128 so it won’t keep mountain bikers from riding the trail. It’s still a big bummer since it was a cool bridge and part of riding the Kokopelli Trail. I’ve driven by it many times and rode across it when I did the Kokopelli Trail lat year. I just saw it when I was to Moab a couple weeks ago.
