Views from the Top of Columbine Climb

August 15th, 2006

Friday night we camped with Pat at Turquoise Lake so that we could get the stuff we needed to crew for him for the Leadville 100. We had left the girls with my parents since Monday was our anniversary. Instead of hanging around to wait for Pat to finish, we bailed and went to the Ores and Mine B&B;.

The Leadville 100 mountain bike race actually goes right by the Ores and Mine B&B; as you drop down the paved road to cross Hwy 82 to get to the Twin Lakes Dam. I really like the upper end of the lakes much better. The lower end is rather open with lots of sage brush but the location was convenient for us. We also wanted to hike over to Interlaken on Sunday and the trailhead is just past where the tents are for the Twin Lakes aid station. The B&B; is run by John and Donna and they are a very nice couple. They took very good care of us while we were there and the rooms are very nice.

After we took a short nap, we decided to drive up to the Columbine Mine since Julie has never been up there. She’s always sat at the aid station without having any idea of what the Columbine climb is like. At the spot right at timberline where you go right to go up the steep road instead of going straight to get to the Gold Basin Mine, there is a small cabin to the right and if you go behind it you can see Twin Lakes. On the way up it was too cloudy to see and on our way down it was getting too dark to get pictures.

This picture is taken from close to where I think the new turn around must be and looking to the southeast. The cabin near the old turn around would be just to the right of the picture.

Picture from the same spot. The old cabin by the old turn around would be at the left edge of the picture.

Picture from the same spot and looking in the general direction of Leadville.

Picture from the same spot and looking back down to where the course comes by the creek near timberline.

The old cabin near the old turn around.

Looking to the southeast from the cabin at the old turn around.

Another shot looking back down the course toward timberline.

View from off the ridge to the right as you get to the top of the climb before curving off to the left. Hwy 82 runs up the valley just past Twin Lakes as it starts the climb to Independence Pass.

Another view from the ridge to the right. You can see the inlet to the upper Twin Lake and the Mt. Elbert Forebay. Off in the distance you can see Turquoise Lake.

Another view from the ridge to the right. Once again you can see the Mt. Elbert Forebay and Turquoise Lake.

Another view from the ridge to the right. Mt. Elbert, the highest point in the state, and you can also see the inlet to the upper Twin Lake.

Leadville Trail 100 MTB Race

August 11th, 2006

Tomorrow is the Leadville Trail 100 MTB Race. It’s the 13th year the race has been held. As far as I know it’s the oldest 100 mile mountain bike race but maybe there’s some older ones out there I don’t know about. I’ve finished it 4 times and last year I crewed for it. This year I’m crewing for it again.

For me there are actually only 2 good reasons to do the race and several not to do the race. First the 2 reasons to do the race.

  1. The people. Ken and Merilee go all out to make the race special for everybody there. The number of volunteers they get to come out and take care of before, during, and after the race is quite amazing. The volunteers do a huge part to make the race special and encourage all the racers. They spend all day handing out water and helping in every way they can. Then there are the racers themselves. For the most part everybody is friendly and will help other riders out.
  2. Doing the Leadville 100 has a certain level of prestige to it. Lots of people that are non-cyclists know about it and have a lot of respect for someone who has finished it. In contrast when I say something about the Durango 100 that has another 5,000 feet of climbing and technical single track, people have no idea what I’m talking about. To give you some idea how much harder the Durango 100 is, the last couple years they’ve offered a $500 bonus to the first person to break under 9 hours in addition to the $500 first place prize. The Leadville 100 will likely have over the top 50 finish under 9 hours.

Now for the reasons not to do it in no particular order.

  • You have to commit to it by the end of January because it’s a lottery to get in. If that’s the only race you’re doing for the year that may not be a big deal but if you’re doing a dozen other races you could be injured or burned out before August.
  • It is one of the most expensive 100 mile mountain bike races.
  • It’s an out and back course. That does give you the opportunity to count what place you’re in but coming down Columbine can be a bit of a pain. I actually find the riders going down to be more in the way than the ones going up because I generally am going much faster than the other guys also heading down.
  • There’s no single track and very little of the jeep road is even technical

In spite of there being more reasons to not to it than I have for doing it, I think the good reasons to do it out weigh the ones to not do it as long as there isn’t something tougher the conflicts with it. I’m sure I’ll be back racing at Leadville sometime. In fact another reason to do it would be to get the giant 1000 mile buckle.

Future Plans

July 12th, 2006

Right now I’m thinking I’ll do the RMCC 200k on July 29th. They also have a 300k from Denver to Aspen the following weekend but that would mean a lot more driving and time away from home. I did both of them last year. The 300k is really a great ride and goes over Independence Pass which is one of my favorites in the state.

If my training goes well and my leg is recovered, I’d then like to do the Durango MTB 100. I finished 4th there in 2003 and 5th in 2004. I’ll have to feel like I’m riding well to go do it because it is a race that can really beat you up. It really makes the other 100 milers seem easy. There’s 18,000 feet of climbing with the high point being over 11,500 feet. In 2003 there were 70 starters and only 15 finishers. Part of it was the really muddy conditions but in 2004 the conditions were probably about as good as they’ll ever be and there were only 16 finishers. The number of starters for the 103 miles has dropped because they’re also offering a 50k and 100k.

I’d really like to be back at RAAM next year but don’t see how I can afford it or have enough vacation time. Of course if I had the money, I could take unpaid time off from work. If you know of any good sponsors or would like to sponsor me, please contact me. Of course if everybody that reads this blog would donate $10 and ask 10 of their friends to do the same, I’d have enough money for RAAM. The only problem is that sounds like those get rich scheme’s that are always filling up my inbox.

Weekend Training Rides

May 9th, 2006

Since I’d been sick last week with a mild cold, I didn’t go to the 200k brevet that I had planned to do. Instead I did a ride up to Palmer Lake, through Black Forest, out on the plains to Peyton and then back US 24 in to town and then rode up toward Woodland Park.

I started late because it was cool and rainy first thing in the morning. It cleared off nicely and dried off making for a nice day when I started out. Thunderstorms kept building around them but I managed to stay out of their way for a while. When I went through Falcon on the way back into town, there was a thunderstorm on each side of US 24.

I debated whether I should take shelter at the gas station or hope I could get between them. I decided to take my chances and the 2 storms grew into one. At first it was just big, stinging, cold rain drops and then it was mixed with big chunks of slush. Fortunately it didn’t turn to hail. I probably rode in the rain for about 30 minutes but it took over an hour to dry off once I got through it and then sun came out. My cyclocomputer once again quit picking up just like it did after riding in the snow a little over a week ago. I discovered that the o-ring that’s supposed to seal the battery compartment on the transmitter has gotten old and cracked. Now I hope I can find something to replace it with. I think I got almost 110 miles in although my computer only recorded a little over 91.

I had the stitches removed from my arm last week and Dr. Carter said I could use the aero bars as much as I wanted as long as it didn’t hurt. I didn’t even feel any discomfort. Unfortunately that couldn’t be said of my knee that I slammed into the fence post when I was riding near Avon. It was stiff for the first couple hours and then it got to the point that it didn’t feel too bad. My bio-mechanics were off though because my ankle and hip hurt and my hamstrings were getting tight.

Sunday I went for my first weekend mountain bike ride in a long time. I’ve done a few mountain bike rides at lunch but they’ve been short. I rode a bunch of my favorite trails such as the Chutes, Buckhorn, Upper Captain Jacks, Bear Creek, Intemann, and some trails in the Red Rock Open Space. My handling skills actually were better than I was expecting but my shoulders and arms got tired since I don’t use them much on the road.

Granny Gear 24 Hour Race National Point Series

April 7th, 2006
24 Hours of Moab 2009

Granny Gear has announced a 24 Hour Race National Point Series. It’s a series made up of 6 of Granny Gear’s 24 hour races. The best 3 results count for the series. Part of the deal is the entry fee goes down for each additional race you do. I really think their entry fees are overpriced for what they provide. I’ve only done their 24 Hours of Moab but I’ve done that 4 times solo. Although some of the 24 Hours of Adrenalin events are about the same. I really wonder though how many teams are out there that do 3 events. They riders I know that do the 24 Hours of Moab are doing shorter NORBA races the rest of the year and Moab just an end of the season thing.

Another new long distance MTB series this year is the National MTB Ultra Endurance Series. It’s a series of 6 100 mile races with 4 races counting for the series. It’s good to see more and more choices in long distance MTB races. Once I get RAAM out of my system, I plan to go back to doing long MTB races. I think the growth of long MTB races is in part because the NORBA races have gotten so short and on such fast courses instead of the epic courses that were common back in the early 90s when mountain biking was new.

24 Hours of EROCK

March 2nd, 2006

This year along with the Elephant Rock Century there is also going to be the 24 Hours of EROCK. Finally, there’s a 24 hour mountain bike race that is less than 30 minutes from my house! The only problem is it’s the weekend before RAAM. I don’t think doing it can be called tapering.

Fire in Gold Camp Tunnel #3

February 17th, 2006

Monday there was a fire in tunnel #3 on Gold Camp Road. The access to the trails past it were closed for a few days although now they saying access is just restricted. There was an article in the Gazette about it. Eco-terrorism is suspected by someone not wanting the road re-opened. It was closed in 1988 because the tunnel was starting to collapse but the Forest Service has been talking about re-opening it to cars. It would be a shame if they did since that’s such a nice area to mountain bike and hike.

As I understand it even before the fire, the tunnel had to be restored because of being put on the National Historic Registry or something like that. When the Forest Service was taking comments on it, I wrote against opening it to cars. I remember what it was like to mountain bike up there when it was open to cars. You can read more about the project on the Forest Service website.
