Palmer Park MTB Race Photos

May 27th, 2010
Matt Simmons at Palmer Park Race

I’ve uploaded several photos of the Ascent Cycling MTB Series race. You can see a few below. Clicking on them will show a larger image. The full set in higher resolution is here.

I’ve also gotten several questions about where the mama bear and cubs were on the course. When I saw them there were in the northeast part of Palmer Park not far from Austin Bluffs although they were first seen close to the central part of the park. The photos are geotagged so this map shows where the bears were on the course when I took the photos.

Bears at Palmer Park Mountain Bike Race

May 22nd, 2010
Bears at Mountain Bike Race in Palmer Park

Today was the first race in the Ascent Cycling MTB Series put on by Sand Creek Sports. Mountain Bikers weren’t the only ones to show up. A mama bear and her 2 cubs wandered through the course during the Pro race during the afternoon.

I was out shooting photos of the race. My friend, Matt Simmons, was in 4th. I was expecting to come by and I kept waiting longer than I thought it should be. My first thought was he had crashed but no one else came by either.

All of a sudden my friend hanging out with me said to look behind. There was the mama bear and her 2 cubs walking across the course. They crossed a couple parts of the course and went down into a drainage.

Soon my friend came by along with about 7 other riders. By then I think the top 3 had a gap of nearly 10 minutes. In the end I doubt it made much difference if any difference in placing since the top 3 already had a fairly good gap.

Matt said he was close to the bears when he got stopped. The mama bear got up on her hind legs and was growling. He was happy when they moved on but knew they headed to where the course looped back. He wasn’t sure how long to wait to make sure he didn’t run into them again.

I also got several shots of the racers and will get some posted in the next day or two. In the meantime, here are a few more photos of the bears.

Update: I’ve uploaded several race photos. I’ve gotten questions about where I saw the bears. This map on SmugMug shows the locations of the bear photos.

Bailey HUNDO: The Senators’ Underground Invitational 100 Mile MTB Race

May 17th, 2010

There’s a new 100 mile mountain bike race in Colorado this year and it’s only a month away. The Bailey HUNDO: The Senators’ Underground Invitational 100 Mile MTB Race will be held on June 19th, 2010. If you missed out on the Leadville 100 or other 100 miles mountain bike races across the country, you still have a chance at getting into the Bailey HUNDO.

Sponsored by four Colorado State Senators, the proceeds of the race will not only enhance the singletrack trail system around Bailey, but also promote mountain biking to at-risk youth, and high schoolers around the state by supporting Trips For Kids Denver/Boulder and the newly-founded Colorado High School Cycling League (CHSCL).

This year is a low key race with a field limit of 150. They’ve said they could see allowing 1,000 racers in the future. This year racers will also be self supported. My guess is that in the future there’ll be aid stations with support but I haven’t gotten a answer from them.

Bailey is a great area to mountain bike and they’re working on building more singletrack. The course will feature over 40 miles of singletrack through the Buffalo Creek Trail System and along the Colorado Trail as well as some challenging climbs on dirt roads and jeep trails. With this race very close to the Colorado Front Range and what should be a great course, I can see this race being very popular if organized well.

There’s no set entry fee for the race. It’s a suggested-donation and pledge-based event. A donation or pledge of $100 gets you a commemorative t-shirt designed by a Platte Canyon junior high school student. A donation or pledge of $250 will additionally qualify you to receive an inaugural Bailey HUNDO jersey.

To have a chance to race this in the inaugural race, you must register by this Wednesday, May 19th. They’re calling it a lottery for picking the 150 riders from those that sign-up but much like the Leadville 100 lottery, I think it’ll be a very weighted lottery. On the race application form, they ask if you live in the districts of any of the 4 Colorado Senators that helped make the race happen. They also want to know how much money you can raise and how you can help promote the race. They also want to know if you have the experience to finish a 100 mile self-supported race.

I’ve seen a couple blog posts about the Bailey HUNDO since it was announced a few weeks ago but haven’t heard of anyone that has applied to do it. Have you or someone you know signed up for it?

Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Entry eBay Auction

May 14th, 2010
Leadville 100 - Bottom of Columbine Climb

If you didn’t get picked in the Leadville 100 lottery and you still want to do the race after the felony charges drama this week, here’s a chance to get in and help a charity. A Leadville 100 entry is being auctioned on eBay to benefit Arts Street. Normally you shouldn’t buy a Leadville 100 entry on eBay but the race organizers son, Cole, is on the board of directors for Arts Street and is a legitimate entry.

Currently there’s only a day left on the auction. The price is at $521 but the reserve hasn’t been met. Over the last few weeks they sold an additional 25 entries for $2,275 each to benefit the LT100 Legacy Foundation so I’d guess the reserve is a fair amount higher.

Arts Street is a 10 year-old non-profit youth program in Denver that creates opportunities for the youth of Colorado. The opportunities provided are designed to foster the inspiration and education of these youth to become tomorrow’s professionals – supporting the workforce needs. This is achieved by developing and implementing highly diversified career-based, educational programs that incorporate real-world learning, artistic expression and creative thinking.

More On Leadville 100 Felony Charges

May 13th, 2010
Lance Armstrong at Leadville 100 Start

The news about Katie Brazelton giving her Leadville 100 entry to Wendy Lyall and both of them being charged with criminal impersonation has spread outside of the mountain bike world. There a good post on the Ex-Pat Ex-Lawyer blog with what lead up to the charges.

In a letter to the Lake County Sheriff, Leadville 100 organizer Ken Chlouber asked for prosecution on theft of services for the $250 in race fees, $225 in awards, plus racer services, including aid stations, security, and a pre-race banquet. That would be much less severe than the criminal impersonation felony that DA Hurlbert charged them with. It seems that Katie Brazelton may have already lost her job over the incident.

As I said I think that cheating to get into the race is serious but worse in this case because of Wendy finishing 2nd in Katie’s age group. Still being charged with a felony is overblown for something like this.

Some people are complaining that Ken doesn’t enforce his rules consistently. We own an old mining claim in Lake County close to Leadville and we always say it’s still the wild, wild west there. It’s not just that Ken runs the Leadville 100 that way. Even so about 10 times as many people wanted to do the race this year as are allowed in.

The Leadville 100 entry lottery isn’t totally a lottery. Some number of riders appear to get picked and the rest get drawn in the lottery. I know riders that have used a friend’s address in Leadville so they’d get picked. Leadville is small enough that Ken and whoever else does the preferred picking probably know when that is the case but the riders have still gotten into the race.

Felony Charge for Racing Leadville 100 Without Entry

May 10th, 2010
Leadville 100 Start

The Leadville 100 mountain bike race has long made it clear that entries are non-refundable and non-transferable. It’s one of a very few races where I’ve had to show my ID to pick up my race packet. Now race organizer, Ken Clouber, has made it clear just how seriously he takes racing with another person’s entry.

Last year Katie Brazelton was injured and unable to race. Rather than just lose her entry, she gave her entry to her friend Wendy Lyall. I’m not sure how that worked because of the required photo ID check. My guess is that Katie picked up the race packet herself.

During race check-in though they put on a bright green band that must be worn during the race and still be on to pick up awards. Although you have to give your race number to check in the morning of the race, they haven’t checked for my band. During the race I can’t tell that they look for the band so it may have not been noticed if Wendy wasn’t wearing one. In the photo with the Denver Post article there’s something green on her left wrist but it’s not clear enough to tell if it’s the required band.

The switch off may have gone unnoticed but Wendy finished in 9:53:27. That was fast enough to put her in 2nd place in the 40-49 age group even though she was 36. Ken Chlouber received an anonymous tip that it might not have been Katie Brazelton racing.

According to the Denver Post article Rachel Farrett, who finished 3rd didn’t recognize the woman who picked up the prize from the race the day before. Farrett remembers the woman who passed her on the race course had blond hair. The woman who accepted the trophy did not.

After being contacted by Ken and Lake County Sheriff Ed Holte, the women returned the belt buckle, pendant and necklace. Ken didn’t think that was enough since the true 2nd and 3rd place finishers didn’t get to enjoy their accomplishment. He also banned both women from ever competing in the Leadville 100 and now Katie and Wendy have been charged with criminal impersonation, a Class 6 felony.

I think using someone else’s entry is a serious thing and it was much worse in this case because Wendy finished 2nd in an older age group. I’m not sure that USA Cycling has anything in the rules to deal with something like this other than suspending them from other races.

Filling felony charges does seem to be going a bit far. I’ve heard the race received well over 10,000 entries for this year’s race. Last year there were 1,400 entries accepted but I haven’t seen the number for this year yet but I hope it’s not higher. Maybe this case is more about deterring the thousands that didn’t make it in the race lottery from lining up on race day with Lance Armstrong than it is about 2 women from last year’s race.

Pikes Peak South Slope Plan

May 6th, 2010
Pikes Peak from Proposed Boehmer/Mason Trail
Pikes Peak from Proposed Boehmer/Mason Trail (CSU Photo)

Colorado Springs Utilities presented the latest Pikes Peak South Slope Plan a little over a week ago on Tuesday, April 27th. I was there along with over 60 others. There were some positive changes based on the feedback given on draft Pikes Peak South Slope Plan presented in January.

One of the changes is the decision to allow mountain bikes on proposed Boehmer/Mason Trail loop that was initially proposed to be closed to bikes. The downside is they’re proposing to increase the trail width to 4 feet to minimize conflict between mountain bikes and other trail users. 4 feet is wider than true singletrack and I doubt it’s necessary. Also trails tend to widen over time so I don’t think they need should start so wide.

Based on the feedback from the January meeting they are now proposing a trail connecting from the Lake Moraine Trail over to the Boehmer/Mason Trail area. This could be a key segment to make completion of Ring the Peak Trail a reality. It also would allow for some epic mountain bike rides connecting with the Barr Trail area. Since it wasn’t on the original plan and it’s been too snowy for them to take a good look at the area, there’s no specific trail location specified.

Although there are no specific plans for building any trail for completing Ring the Peak Trail, they didn’t seem so opposed to it. Most of the sensitive big horn sheep habitat where it makes most sense for the trail is on Forest Service land. There would also need to be a connection through Colorado Springs Utilities land. CSU said they would work with the Forest Service to see if it would be possible.

Another new proposal that I don’t like is allowing limited hunting. According to their slide on the feedback received, they got over 120 comments supporting hunting. That’s over double the number supporting the Ring the Peak Trail which had the 2nd most comments. Although a couple people brought it up at the January meeting, there didn’t seem to be much support for it. My guess is some group organized and sent in a lot of comments online. I’ve heard bullets whiz by me more than once while mountain biking so I’m not excited about hunters being in the area.

I hadn’t noticed before that dogs won’t be allowed on the Pikes Peak South Slope. Because of wildlife concerns especially with the big horn sheep, it makes sense to not allow dogs.

There weren’t a lot of comments but the most were about the trail being so wide and the area being closed in the winter. The plan is for the area to only be open from mid-May through mid-October. People, myself including, would like to be able to snowshoe and cross-country ski on the trails even if it means starting at Gold Camp Road.

So the big question that hasn’t been answered yet is how the building of the trailheads and trails and the ongoing maintenance will be funded. Colorado Springs Utilities will pay for the detailed plan to be completed. The Colorado Springs Park and Recreation department will be responsible for finding the funding for building and maintaining the trailheads and trails. The parks department has had their general fund budget slashed from close to $20 million in 2008 to about $3 million this year so that’ll be a challenge.

The number being used at the meeting was somewhere around $2 to $2.5 million for building everything in the plan. Other places I’ve seen estimates as high as $4 million. Tom, the presenter, said the about $2 million amount is based on bringing in a commercial contractor to do most of the work. Using volunteers to build trails would bring that down. However, the single biggest cost is building bridges and boardwalks over sensitive wetlands and that may be hard to reduce much with volunteers. He said that’s about $900k and I found nearly that much with a quick glance through the costs section of the plan.

At least some funding could come from the Trails and Open Space (TOPS) program. Also the project seems like a great fit for money from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) which is funded from the state lottery proceeds. Fishing is Fun Grants (CDOW), the Fish and Wildlife Resources Fund, Trail Construction Grants (Colorado State Trails Program) and Conservation Trust Fund are listed as other funding sources for construction. Most likely a fee based system will be used to provide ongoing funding.

Another part of the plan that isn’t on the Pikes Peak South Slope is the improvement of the Ute Trail. The Ute Trail runs from near the base of the Manitou Incline to Cascade. Although it isn’t currently an official trail, it is well used but has some very steep sections with erosion issues. The proposal is that El Paso Country Parks will be in charge of the improvements and manage the trail.

You can find many more details including maps, photos and charts in the 88 page plan posted online. You can find some additional information on main Watershed Access Project page including an online form to submit comments by May 18th. It also gives information on getting notified of volunteer or guided tour opportunities.

Ride Your Bike Up Pikes Peak Highway

April 1st, 2010

Update: I’ve posted Pikes Peak Assault photos.

Update: The Pikes Peak ride has been lengthened and the price reduced. Click here for details.

Registration opened today for the new Assault in the Peak bike ride. It’s a non-competitive ride up the entire Pikes Peak Highway to the summit of Pikes Peak on Sunday, August 29th. Normally bikes aren’t allowed on the road. The promoter has rented the highway for the day so there will be no cars.

The ride starts at 7,750 feed at finishes at 14,110. That makes a gain of 6,360 feet in 18.47 miles. The average grade is 6.7% with the steepest grade at 10.5%. This compares to Mount Evans climbing 6,575 feet over 27.4 miles.

Although much of the road used to be gravel, they’ve been paving a bit more of it each summer. So much gravel was washing off the road that it was causing environmental issues. By the time of the ride they expect only 2.5 miles to be gravel.

There used to be a mountain bike race to the summit that I did several times. That race started at the old ski area and only did the top 8 miles with 3210 feet of climbing. The closest I’ve come to riding all the way is when I rode from Crystal Reservoir to the summit. That’s about 12 miles with 4900 feet of climbing. It’s certainly a very cool ride to do.

So what happens once you make it to the top? Riders will be allowed to ride down the mountain in controlled groups, secure a seat in one of the downhill vans or ride the Pikes Peak Cog Railway down the other side of the mountain. I’m not sure how riding the Cog will work since it’s normally hard to get a one way ticket and I assume you’ll have to pay for it.

Registration is through BikeReg and is limited to the first 1500 riders. The ride isn’t cheap and will set you back $180. I’m sure renting the highway for the day isn’t cheap and they will have aid stations along the way, time everyone and take warm clothes to the summit.

Riding 18 miles uphill isn’t for you? Challenge unlimited has a permit to do guided rides down Pikes Peak throughout the summer. They take care of getting you to the top and includes bike and helmet. It costs around $100 depending on time of day and size of group.

Race Across the Sky DVD Available for Ordering

March 26th, 2010

Race Across the Sky, the movie about the 2009 Leadville 100, is now available for pre-ordering on regular DVD and Blu-Ray. They’re saying it will ship on March 30th. It is $29.95 on DVD and $34.95 for Blu-Ray.

I saw the movie when it was shown in theaters last fall. I wrote a review of the Race Across the Sky movie back then. I thought it covered the race well although I think it makes the race look a lot easier than it actually is.
