Sand Creek Series Final and State Games of America

July 29th, 2009

The Sand Creek Series final is this Saturday. It’s also the mountain bike race for the State Games of America. Today at 5 PM is the deadline to register online.

Racers will be doing 1 or 2 laps of the Falcon Trail at the Air Force Academy. First racers will start at 8 AM with other classes starting a few minutes after.

The start/finish will be just northwest of the Falcon Stadium parking lot. From the course map, it appears the start is across Academy Drive from the parking lot. Check the Sand Creek Sports site for more info.

It’s a great course. I’m bummed because I’d like to race it. This is my last big training weekend for the Leadville 100 and I’ll be training on the Leadville course instead.

Silver Rush 50 for Training

July 24th, 2009

Silver Rush 50 Elevation Profile

Tomorrow I’ll be doing the Silver Rush 50 mountain bike race in a desperate attempt to get some fitness for the Leadville 100. The Leadville 100 is only 3 weeks away and I’ve barely trained for it.

50 miles with 8,000 feet of climbing will hurt with my lack of fitness. No, it’ll REALLY hurt but it should give my fitness a big jump. I’m guessing it’ll take me a little over 6 hours.

Check twitter late in the afternoon to see how it went.

Leadville 100 MTB FAQ: Best Bike?

July 22nd, 2009

Bike Laid Out for Leadville 100 Start
This post is part of the Leadville 100 MTB FAQ.

The most important thing about a mountain bike for the Leadville 100 and for mountain biking in general is that you’re fit properly on it. It’s not uncommon for racers in Leadville to have back pain. One of the causes is using a bike that doesn’t fit properly. Small changes can make a big change.

Full Suspension or HardTail?

A lot of first time Leadville 100 racers wonder if a full suspension or hardtail bike is best. I think it was still true last year that over half the top 20 finishers were on hardtail bikes. Out of all the racers, It looks like more are using full suspension.

I’ve done Leadville 2 times on a full suspension and 3 on a hardtail. My fastest and slowest finishes were on the same hardtail mountain bike. Personally I don’t see that a full suspension bike is an advantage except at the top of the Columbine Mine climb and descending Sugar Load inbound. However with the advances in full suspension designs the last few years, there isn’t a big penalty in weight and efficiency on the rest of the course.

Riders that don’t have as good of bike handling skills will do better on a full suspension bike. Also your back and arms should be less fatigued when riding full suspension. If you’re unsure, I’d go with a full suspension bike.

From test riding, I like the Specialized Epic or the Intense Spider 2 but there are plenty of other good bikes. Because bikes have different geometries, different bikes may fit you better.

29er, 26er or 69er?

29er mountain bikes have larger 29 inch wheels instead of the standard 26 inch mountain bike wheels. The advantage of the larger wheels is that they roll over obstacles better. The Leadville 100 course isn’t that technical so I don’t see them being an advantage but shouldn’t hurt either.

I haven’t found a 29er one that fits me right. This isn’t unusual for shorter riders. That’s where a 69er bike comes in. They have the larger 29 inch wheel on the front and a 26 inch wheel on the back. There are only a few of them on the market.

Bottom Line

Any bike that fits you well and is reliable will work well at the Leadville 100. Your fitness and skills will make a much bigger difference. I wouldn’t complain about racing on Lance Armstrong’s 2008 Leadville 100 bike though.

Tour de France Insider Tweets

July 12th, 2009
Share photos on twitter with Twitpic

Twitter has become popular in the last few months. Lance Armstrong has been using it for quite a while and tweeting regularly. This year there are several riders, crew and commentators tweeting from the Tour de France.

I decided this weekend to put a page together that updates with the latest Tour de France riders, staff and commentators tweets. I’m intentionally not getting twitter search results for #tdf because of the large number of tweets.

Bookmark the page and get the insiders view of the Tour de France. If you have suggestions on improving the page or other feedback, leave a comment below.

Below is a sample of some recent tweets. Go here for the latest tweets.

Climb Faster Than Tom Danielson? Win $1,000!

July 8th, 2009

The 1st annualCarmichael Training Systems Cheyenne Cañon Time Trial is this Saturday, July 11th. The climb is only 3.1 miles but climbs 1,250 feet. One section in the middle is particularly steep.

When I started racing 20 years ago, we had a spring time trial training series. It ended with a time trial up Cheyenne Cañon. If I remember right, I did it in the 17-18 minute range which I thought was pretty good.

Tom Danielson has ridden it in 13 minutes, 34 seconds. There’s a $1000.00 prime for breaking his time. I’ll be surprised if it gets broken but you never know who will show up.

The race isn’t just for fast road racers. There are also citizen and mountain bike categories. Tomorrow is the last day to register and registtration is online only.

For the kids there is Kids Fun Ride at Cheyenne Canon put on by Kids on Bikes. Registration for kids will be Saturday morning near the Starsmore Discovery Center. There will be 2 starts. The first for younger children or those with little or no riding experience is at 8:00 AM and the 2nd for more experienced kids at 8:20 AM.

Awards and more will be at The Endurance Sports Club at Carmichael Training Systems new location on 21st and HWY 24. Free food and drinks including beer from Bristol. The Tour De France will be on TV.
