Leadville Winter Bike Races

Update: 2008 Leadville Winter Bike Series information is here.

Once again this year, Melanzana and Bicycle Haven are putting on a winter mountain bike race series in Leadville. There will be 3 races. The dates are January 27, February 10, and February 24. There’s more info on a thread at MTBR.com.

Nearly every year I think of going and giving it a try but never have. It would be good practice if I ever decide to attempt the Iditarod Trail Invitational. I know a couple people that have done it. Several years ago I thought pretty seriously about doing it but I’ve gotten wimpy with cold in my old age. Actually it’s because my winter gear is old and worn out and I’ve spent all my money on other things like RAAM. Of course Jill has said you can make do with whatever you have lying around so I guess I don’t really have an excuse.

I have said that you can ride in the winter with a good combination of regular clothes, but it is not necessarily the best route to go.

That would be great if you decided to come up to Alaska and ride in the Iditarod Trail Invitational. I am thinking pretty seriously about riding it in 2008. I’d be interested to see your training experiences there in Colorado, where it actually gets cold. 🙂 If you ask me, the act of riding a trainer in a bathroom with a space heater pumping is waaay more painful than properly-dressed-for cold riding could ever be.

Here on the front range it doesn’t normally get all that cold although last week we did have a couple nights were it dropped below zero. Today it was in the 50s.

I think the biggest problem is we don’t get much snow and what we do get is generally gone in a couple days. It’s about an hour drive one way to get to where there’s plenty of snow.

I really think you should do the Iditarod Trail Invitational. I’m not sure whether I’ll do the Iditarod. I’ve never been to Alaska in the winter and I’d like to sometime so that would be a good excuse. My sister keeps talking of moving back the end of next summer. If she does, it would be harder to do the Iditarod since she lives in Wasilla. If I think she’s really going to move back, maybe I’ll come up and do the 24 Hours of Kincaid while she’s still there.
