Like so many things German, the AX Lightness Ultra 28C Extralite Hub Clincher Wheelset is all about top shelf performance and engineering. Also, like many things German, it doesn't bother with flashy, look at me colors and graphics. If flash is needed, the folks at AX Lightness trust that you'll provide it at the finish line. The most noticeable feature of the Ultra 28C rims is its extra wide cross section and blunt, round shape. This allows you to run lower air pressures for a more comfortable ride, decreased rolling resistance, and confidence inspiring handling. It also means the elimination of unruly laminar air and drag inducing dead air pockets, and near immunity to crosswinds. While they may look like mass production rims, the Ultra 28Cs have been engineered to near perfection with AX's proprietary processes. The Ultra 28Cs feature the universal construction technology that defines AX's wheels, including the Seamless Brake Surface SBS. SBS uses high pressure autoclaves to combine the wheels' layers with gas, eliminating any imperfections down to the smallest edge, for a one piece brake surface that's both seamless and virtually free of imperfections. There is no shuddering during hard braking. The rims are also tempered after curing, which re aligns the resin crystals so the rim can withstand much higher braking temperatures than standard carbon rims. The hubs come from Extralite, an Italian manufacturer. The Ultra Front SP and Cyber Rear SP hubs are designed with weight reduction as the priority, although Extralite also focused on the strength and stiffness required for fast, efficient, powerful climbing. The oversized flanges are designed to better handle the high tension by self aligning when stress is applied. The spokes' stiffness is also increased in order to maximize the wheels' lateral stiffness. Finally, the oversized axle's increased stiffness adds efficiency to your climb, and oversized bearings reduce mechanical friction during make or...
