Strider's line of balance bikes were initially developed for children ranging from the toddling years to five or six however, the line has since expanded to include an age range as high as twelve in order to allow children to continue to develop advanced proprioceptive skills. The Strider 16 Sport Kid's Bike is the largest children's model, and its components and features have been updated for the new model year. It's ideal for children who are just learning to ride, have special needs, or are looking for an alternative at the skate park. The defining feature of Strider bikes is the absence of cranks, which means the child's feet are used to directly propel the bike, with no intermediary drivetrain. The motion is different than walking, in that sitting on a bike requires side to side balance and the ability to lean without falling. For coasting or performing tricks, the Strider 16 also includes stationary platform pedal mounts where the bottom bracket would normally be. The cockpit incorporates a three degree sweep handlebar, and pressed in bearings provide sure handling while the plush saddle and all terrain tires provide comfort and confidence over grass, gravel, dirt, and pavement. The handlebar mounted brake levers transition children from stopping with their feet to stopping with the Strider 16's front and rear V brakes.
