Splitting the difference between a heavy hiking boot and an extra light mountaineering boot, Salomon's X Alp MTN GTX Women's Mountaineering Boot serves up the cushioning, agility, and precision you need for cold approaches, tough snowy hikes, and ridge climbs. The lightest member of the X Alp mountaineering line, the MTN GTX uses the same waterproof and breathable Gore Tex Performance Comfort membrane as its big sisters, but Salomon opted for a nubuck leather and Cordura upper in place of a mountaineering style gaiter. These changes make it less of a speedy alpine crusher than a do it all winter workhorse, but the 3D Edging chassis and flexible Mountaineering Contagrip sole still offer plenty of grip and precision on rocky, snowy, and slick terrain. The X Alp is also compatible with strap on crampons if you need some extra grip. Just because it's lightweight doesn't mean there's no cushion, either. Salomon built in an EVA foam footbed and midsole, along with an Ortholite sockliner, to take the sting out of rugged trails and keep your feet happy from the approach to the summit and back. A heel strap and heel foam provide plenty of rear support, while the gusseted tongue blocks snow and debris and the self locking eyelets help you dial in a snug and comfortable fit to make your way up the mountain that much easier.
