Fall is upon us, and that means winter and spring are on deck. The usual gear for commuting isn't up to par for these conditions, too light, too heavy it can be difficult to strike a balance between hot summers and snowy winters. Giro's line of New Road cycling apparel includes elements to bridge that divide, and the Giro Ride Full Zip Long Sleeve jersey has become a common sight around the office because it does just that. The Ride is made entirely of a high percentage merino wool blend that feels as good as it looks. This jersey is a delightful nod to cycling's romantic past, where wool was the only reasonable choice for apparel. In this age of full carbon rims and electronic shifting, though, we'd normally feel a bit sheepish wearing what amounts to a lightweight, tastefully designed Merino sweater on the bike. Fortunately, the addition of polyester gives the material a bit more springiness and durability, satisfying our insistence on contemporary utility while still indulging the more classically fashionable cyclists among us. The Ride's fit is slim, so it can be layered under a jacket for a truly cozy ride on especially chilly days, but its wool construction makes it an effective stand alone top for brisk fall and spring days. Its three rear pockets are reinforced at the seams, buttressing up the soft, yielding material of the jersey so it won't deform and lose stability when the pockets are full of, say, new crop apples picked on a rural spin in the fall. The long sleeve Ride's fabric is woven a bit heavier than its short sleeve cousin, but we'd recommend not mentioning that to its face. The Giro Ride Full Zip Jersey Long Sleeve Men's is available in five sizes from Small to XX Large in the colors Jet Black Heather and Wild Lime Heather.
