Seeing ENVE's backyard testing ground lies along the towering peaks, low lying basins, and rolling benches of the Wasatch Range here in Northern Utah, it makes perfect sense to create a versatile wheelset for practically any condition experienced while riding in varying terrain and rapidly changing environments. Created with versatility and ambitious mountain rides in mind, the SES 3. 4 Carbon Disc Road Wheelset enjoys the benefits of its Smart ENVE System design, which is to say it's sufficiently aerodynamic, but without being a hindrance or feeling unstable when blustery crosswinds threaten your efforts over alpine passes. The Smart ENVE System plays out differently in each application and ENVE desired an extremely light wheel for spirited climbing in the mountains, but without forgoing aerodynamics. Their solution was to make the front wheel approximately four millimeters shallower than the rear, which helps to mitigate the sail like effect you'd experience with a deeper carbon wheel, especially seeing the front is first to change direction and catch crosswinds. The slightly deeper rear aides in aerodynamic efficiency by redirecting airflow passed from the front to help you gain valuable watts. Not only is the shape of the rim important, but its overall width is crucial in reducing energy lost to rolling resistance. Realizing this, ENVE optimized the SES 3. 4 for 25 millimeter tires, which reduce rolling resistance while allowing for extra grip and more overall comfort, especially when you're running them in tubeless form.
