Baby Steps to Your Dream Adventure

I often get asked how I started doing long, exciting adventures like 10 days backpacking in the Alaska wilderness, the Leadville 100 mountain bike race, or the toughest one Race Across America (RAAM). Those that ask me don't see how they could go from the small adventures they've done to something much bigger.

The answer is taking baby steps or pedaling with training wheels along the way. I had been racing nearly 10 years before I did a race over 6 hours. Even after doing 6 solo mountain bike races, I wasn't sure I'd finish my first 500+ mile RAAM qualifier through the desert or California. I finished it and was fast enough to qualify for RAAM. I did another 3 qualifiers before taking the step up to RAAM.

If you dream of a big adventure but don't think you'll ever be capable of doing it, think again. It doesn't matter if it's climbing Everest, racing your bike across the US in RAAM or something smaller. Just find some fun, doable steps and start now. You may be surprised by what adventures you'll have.

UltraRob.com has also grown much like my adventures. It's grown from a small site with planned races, race results and a blog about training for RAAM into much more. Last month there were over 80,000 unique visits and 150,000 pageviews on UltraRob.com. Where will it go next? It'll be a journey and I'm sure it'll be baby step by baby step.

What adventure are you dreaming about doing or have already experienced by taking little steps?

Extreme Indoor Cycling

Now that it's dark early and the days are getting colder, many cyclists find it hard to ride outside. Hardy riders keep riding all winter. Riders like Jill in Alaska actually look forward to winter and enjoy riding in the snow.

For those that aren't like Jill, there are indoor bike trainers and rollers. As with most things, some people take indoor cycling to the extreme.

The UMCA Indoor Challenge started November 1 and runs through March 31st. Rides have to be at least 2 hours long to count. No more than one 5 minute break is allowed per hour except every 6 hours an addition 15 minute break can be taken.

Points are awarded per hour of riding and hour 6 of a ride receives more points than the first hour of the ride. The 2009 final Indoor Challenge standings show several rides of 6+ hours including a 24 hour ride.

In December 2007, John Jurczynski and Mike Gallagher rode spinning bikes for 113 hours for a Guinness World Record. That is over 4 and half days with less than 2 hours a day off the bike! I think someone tried breaking the record since then but I couldn't find the information.

Many years ago I did a 5 hour ride on my trainer and swore I'd never do it again. I broke that when I rode 6 hours and 12 minutes in May for the Fat Cyclist's 100 Miles of Nowhere.

Between watching the RAAM movie, Bicycle Dreams, and having my kids hang out with me, 6 hours on the trainer wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

What's your longest indoor ride and what do you do to stay motivated and focused while riding inside?

Race Across the Sky Encore this Week

Dave Wiens Near Finish of 2009 Leadville 100

The Race Across the Sky movie about the Leadville 100 mountain bike race was sold out at many theaters for it's one night showing a few weeks ago. Due to it's popularity, it's being shown again this Thursday, November 12th. I enjoyed and you can read my Race Across the Sky review to find out more.

You can enter your zip code to find a location and purchase tickets or view a complete list of theaters showing Race Across the Sky encore. If you missed the first showing, I recommend you go see this one.

Spooky Bike Criterium

Local mountain Pro Matt Simmons with his wife.

I had planned to go over to the Halloween Costume bike criterium put on by the Women's Mountain Bike Association of Colorado Springs last Saturday. I didn't manage to make it over to it though.

It looks like I missed a fun event. For more funny and/or scary photos, check out more Halloween costume photos from WMBA. Also head over to Matt Simmon's Halloween crit write up. He's a local Pro on the the Pro Cycling mountain bike team.

Is a Roundabout Needed on a Bike Path?

Bike Path Roundabout

I don't understand the popularity of roundabouts. It seems they've been showing up all over the place the last few years.

I understand the concept and how they should help keep traffic flowing through an intersection. The problem is too many people don't understand how to use them. All it takes is one person to cause major problems.

I guess the Colorado Springs Park and Rec department decided that bicyclists need to be included in the trend. This year they put in a roundabout on the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail near downtown. It's at the intersection of the Greenway Trail and the Midland Trail across from the America the Beautiful Park.

From the Greenway Trail, it was hard to see if anyone was coming from the west on the Midland Trail. The way they cut into the bank to put in the roundabout would have fixed that problem.

The city has been threatening to cut bus service and other essentials services if voters didn't vote for tripling city property taxes. Not surprisingly voters defeated the tax increase by nearly 2-1 yesterday. We may just need the roundabout on the bike path.

Leadville 100 Movie - Race Across the Sky Review

Last night was the showing of the Race Across the Sky which is about the 2009 Leadville 100 mountain bike race. The movie was sold out in many locations across the country. It was planned as a one night showing but because of it's popularity, there is going to be an encore on November 12th, 2009.

There were 1400 racers entered in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race with some racers taking over 12 hours to finish. That makes for lots of interesting stories to be condensed down to about an hour and a half. Not surprisingly the focus of the movie was on Lance Armstrong, Dave Wiens and a few of the other top racers.

In typical Dave Wiens style, he thanked the volunteers at the top of the Columbine Climb as he went by. It was entertaining to watch Lance Armstrong trying to fix his flat late in the race. In the short panel discussion shown before and after the race, he admits he can't fix a flat to save his life. At the finish line, Dave Wiens said, "Last year Lance was just off the couch, this year he was just off the Tour de France."

Although the movie focused on the leaders, there were shots of average riders throughout the movie. Riders farther back were shown suffering as they pushed their bikes up the Columbine climb. There was an emotional scene as riders that were too slow missed the time cut-off at the Twin Lakes aid station and were forced to stop racing.

The emotional and inspirational story of Roxanne Hall was highlighted. Last year she was hit by a car while training for the Leadville 100. Her back was broken in several places and she had many other life threatening injuries. Not only did she fight back from her injuries but she raced this year.

Grace Ragland chatted briefly as she hike-a-biked up the Columbine Climb. She was diagnosed with MS 20 years ago if I remember correctly.

I saw about a a dozen racers that I know. One was Ricky McDonald. He's one of a handful of racers that have finished the Leadville 100 MTB all 16 years. We used to race shorter NORBA races together back in the '90s. He's still riding the same bike and riding in his Team Huffy Fred shirt.

Overall I thought the movie was great. It gives family and friends a glimpse into our experience that we have when we race it. Sure it doesn't give the full feeling of being there racing or crewing but it would be impossible to portray it all in a movie.

There were some complaints about the video and audio quality and the soundtrack on the Yahoo Leadville 100 list. I thought the video was plenty good although there were some water drops on the lens a couple times and occasional video shaking on the rough roads. I'm not a good judge of music. It would have to be really terrible for it to bother me. There were also some complaints about focusing too much on the leaders.

Maybe I'm not enough of a movie critic, but I enjoyed the Race Across the Sky for what it was. My biggest complaint would be that it doesn't show how steep and tough the climbs are. I was with a group of 16 people and I only heard talk about it being great and no complaints.

Don't Go to the Encore If ...

  • You're looking for a compelling story line
  • You don't want the movie to be about Lance Armstrong and Dave Wiens
  • You don't like to hear Bob Roll's wild descriptive phrases
  • You want it to be about your Leadville 100 experience
  • You expect Hollywood quality filming
If none of the above apply and you missed the movie last night, you should go see it on November 12th. Locations aren't listed yet but check the Race Across the Sky encore info page soon for details.

Leadville 100 Movie This Week

Lance Armstrong at 2009 Leadville 100

Race Across the Sky, the documentary about this year's Leadville 100 mountain bike race, is this Thursday at 6 PM. The movie is sold out at most theaters in Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins according to posts on the Yahoo Leadville 100 list. Here in Colorado Springs, the 3 theaters (Hollywood Theaters 14, Tinseltown and Cinemark Carefree Circle) that are showing it still show tickets available online.

For the movie trailer and more about it, see my post from a few weeks ago. If you're in the Colorado Springs area, I'm getting a group together at Hollywood Theaters 14 and you're welcome to join us. You can RSVP on Facebook. We'll try getting seats together.

Sand Creek Fall Classic 2009

Yesterday was the Sand Creek Fall Classic which as far as I know was the last mountain bike race of the season in Colorado. Even though it was cold and icy last weekend, this weekend was absolutely perfect fall weather. There was bright blue sky with temperatures around 70 degrees.

I went out and shoot some photos of the end of the 11:15 start and the Pros and Category 1 (Experts) that started at 1:00 PM. The course was about a 3 mile loop and included some great singletrack. It made me wish I was racing.

The field sizes were small but that wasn't surprising with the race so late in the year. Below are a few of the photos I took. You can see more of my Sand Creek Fall Classic photos in the photo section. I plan to add another album with many more photos.

About The Shot was also out shooting photos and should have them online in a couple days. They also have a few 2010 Sand Creek Series calendars available.

2009 24 Hours of Moab Photos Day 1

Unlike last year, the weather at the 24 Hours of Moab was perfect today. Of course now that it's night the temperatures have dropped.

A couple bummer's in the solo classes. Chris Eatough was here but was sick and didn't start. Defending womens champion, Jari Kirkland, crashed on the 2nd lap. She cut her knee open and had to go to the ER to get it stitched up.

Local Colorado Springs Pro Men's team from Pro Cycling have a lead over the 2nd place Hammer Nutriton team. For up to the date results go to Granny Gear's website and follow the RealTime scoring links.

I have uploaded some photos to Flickr. Since the internet connection isn't very good, I'll upload the higher resolution ones to SmugMug later. Update: I've uploaded photos to SmugMug here. Many more photos to come. I've also uploaded the photos to the UltraRob.com fan page on Facebook.

2009 24 Hours of Moab

2008 24 Hours of Moab

Update: 2009 24 Hours of Moab Day 1 Photos

This weekend is the 15th annual 24 Hours of Moab. This year it is the USA Cycling 24 Hour National Championships. This should bring out a lot of the top riders both in the solo and team categories. Chris Eatough will be there but has announced he is retiring after this last race.

I've always done better and longer races but the 24 Hours of Moab in 1997 was my first ultra endurance bike race. I showed up and had never intentionally ridden at night except commuting on the bike path in college. The only bike light I had was barely bright enough to avoid sticks and junk on the bike path.

Fortunately Schwinn loaned me a set of good lights for my first 24 hour race. I was in 3rd after 12 hours. I had been sick earlier in the week and was still congested.

Soon after midnight it started snowing. With the cold, I got even more congested and had to stop riding for 7 hours. I was so congested I had to stay sitting up to breathe. Even then I'd start choking if I feel asleep. Once it warmed up, I went out and rode another 2 laps to finish 8th.

Since then I've raced the 24 Hours of Moab 3 more times solo. Like last year, I'll be back this year but shooting photos instead of racing. Depending on the internet access I can get out in the desert, I'll be posting updates here and/or to twitter.

One More Pikes Peak Region Mountain Bike Race

Even though the 2009 cyclocross season is in full swing, mountain bike racing isn't quite over in the Pikes Peak region. But first I let something sneak up without posting about it.

About the Shot Photography has Sand Creek Series 2010 calendar. Order deadline is October 8th which is today, Thursday. The calendar is $17.50. The calendar can be picked up at the October 17th race.

The Sand Creek Fall Classic mountain bike race is October 17th in Palmer Park. The Carmichael Training Systems Sand Creek Series is finished so it's not part of the series. You can view the race flyer here. The pre-entry deadline is Thursday, October 15th.

The course hasn't been finalized yet but will be in the northeast part of the park and around Lazy Land. It is expected to be about 2.5 miles. If it's where I think it is there should be a little technical coming off the ridge not far from the dog park. There'll also be some open power sections too.

Once the course is finalized, I'll try getting the info posted here. The course map is now on the Sand Creek Sports site. It looks like it'll be a good classic of some easier trails and least a bit of technical.

Other Sand Creek News

The UCI Pro XCT race will be back in 2010 and will carry more UCI points. Correction: The Pro XCT race will be once again be a category 3 UCI race. Andy was asked to put on a category 2 but didn't think he had the budget.

The Sand Creek Pro XCT 2010 dates are July 10 & 11 and will be the Pro XCT Series Final race as well as the final National XC Championship Qualification Race. The XC National Championships are the following weekend in Granby, CO at the Sol Vista ski area.

I haven't heard any details on the Sand Creek Series for 2010 but from what I've heard, I expect it'll be back with at least as many races as this year.

Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Movie Tickets On Sale

Details are now out for the documentary about this year's Leadville 100. It will be shown on Thursday, October 22nd. There is going to be a panel discussion with Lance Armstrong, Chris Carmichael, Dave Wiens, Ken Chlouber and Travis Brown before the start of the documentary.

There is a long list of theaters showing the movie. If I read the info page correctly, the panel discussion will be 8 PM ET, 7 PM CT and 6 PM CT. Theaters in Pacific time will have it tape delayed until 8 PM. I don't see a start time for the actual movie so I'm guessing it'll start when the discussion ends.

There are 3 theaters showing it in Colorado Springs. They are Hollywood Theaters 14, Tinseltown and Cinemark Carefree Circle.

I'm planning to go to Hollywood Theaters 14 and have set up an event on the UltraRob.com Facebook fan page. If you're local, please come join. Of course you're also welcome if you don't live here.

Interbike 2009 Outdoor Demo Day 2 Highlights

Today was the 2nd day of the Outdoor Demo at Interbike. As expected it was much busier than the first. More people meant more waiting to get demo bikes to ride. Tomorrow Interbike moves inside.

Electric Assist Bikes from Kilowatt Bikes

Although I don't see myself switching to an electric bike any time soon, I wanted to check them out. The electric bikes vary from small amount of assistance to ones that seem closer to mopeds.

I noticed the Kilowatt Bikes because they still look like bikes. The Commuter requires that you keep pedaling and the electric motor will turn off if you miss a couple pedal strokes. The Cruiser allows you to completely quit pedaling and let it do all the work.

The batteries take about 4 hours to charge. You typically can go 30-50 miles on a charge depending on how much pedal. I enjoyed riding up the hill on a cruiser bike passing guys on tricked out bikes. I can see these bikes being great for people wanting a way to get around and aren't serious cyclists.

Specialized Epic Marathon 29er

I rode the Specialized Epic Marathon 29er.  I really wanted to ride the S-Works Epic but it was a good wait to just get the 29er.  In a way though I'm glad I rode it since it's the first time I've ridden a 29er on a rough trail.

Unlike some of the other 29ers I've tried in parking lots, the Specialized Epic felt like it fit well. On the open smooth trails, the 29er felt big but rode nicely. Like with the Moots 69er, the steering felt different because of the large front wheel.

Once I hit the rocky downhill, I really didn't feel comfortable being up higher. When I'd go over drops, it felt like I was having trouble keeping my weight far enough back. Of course it could partly be because I'm not used to it but I'm not ready to more to a 29er.

Because I still like riding a hardtail, I like the Specialized Epics because the brain makes them feel like a hardtrail most of the time but the suspension becomes active when needed.  Today I got more trail riding than I've been able to on my other test rides of them and I still like the suspension.

Van Dessel Cross Bike

I took the Van Dessel Gin Trombones cross bikes out for a spin. The frame was a size too big so I was reaching a bit on it. Even with the frame being too big, it handled nicely in loose gravel. It was stiff when I got out of the saddle.

Kenda Tires

When I stopped by the Kenda booth, I noticed a tire that looked like a semi-slick but with more aggressive side knobs than most semi-slicks. It's the first one in the photo above. It seems like a great tire for the Leadville 100.

The tire is still a prototype. The rep said it should be available by the end of the year. He's pretty sure it'll make it to market but it could get some changes before then.

For more photos, you can check out my Interbike 2009 Outdoor Demo Day 2 album.

Interbike 2009 Outdoor Demo Day 1 Highlights

Interbike 2009 Outdoor Demo

Today was the first day of the Interbike Outdoor Demo. I saw a few people I know and got to meet some people that I have only known online. Of course there was way more bikes and bike gear than could be seen in a day.

Delta 7 Mesh Bikes

Delta 7 IsoTruss Mountain Bike
Although I've seen several photos of Delta 7 IsoTruss bikes, I had never seen one. Touching one was different than what I expected. It feels very smooth and I had expected a rough almost sharp feel. You can also squeeze it very hard and not feel it deform at all. They said it can be built up for racing around 18 pounds but there are other mountain bikes that are as light or lighter.

I took one of the mountain bikes out for a spin. It's very stiff and responsive and as with other carbon bikes it dampens the bumps. Honestly though it rode like an average carbon fiber bike. Maybe I'd have a different opinion if I spent more than 15 minutes riding but I don't see an advantage over other bikes.

Ibis Tranny

The Ibis Tranny is another hardtail carbon bike that I test rode. I loved the way it climbed and handled.

The Tranny has a very innovative design. It can also be used as a real single speed bike. There's a bolt behind the bottom bracket that can be loosened and then the chainstays lengthened to tighten the chain. The whole rear triangle is easy to remove so you can pack it small and not pay the exorbitant airline bike fee. Even with all those features, the frame is about 3 pounds and a complete bike with WTF group is about 19 pounds.

Surly Pugsley

The Surly Pugsley is another bike that I've seen plenty of photos but never ridden one. The Pugsley is designed for winter riding in soft snow and also does well in the sand on beaches.

I didn't find any snow in the heat of the Nevada desert but I did find some soft dirt to ride in. The bike floated nicely over the top where I would have come to a stop with normal sized tires. With 4 inch wide tires and a lot of weight, it was surprisingly easy to ride and handle.

Moots Gristle 69er

Moots Gristle 69er
I've tried finding a 29er that I felt would fit me. With my short legs none have seemed the right fit. 69ers are designed for people like me. They have a 29 inch wheel in front to help roll over obstacles and a 26 inch wheel in the back so the fit is better for shorter riders.

I found that the larger front wheel gave a noticeably different feel to the bike. I think it was compounded because the only size demo bike Moots had was a size too big for me. It did roll over rocks easily and cornered well even though it felt different. I think with a proper sized frame I could quickly get used to and love the 69er.

Kidz Tandem

The Kidz Tandem is a tandem bike where the kid sits in the front so they can see where they are going. Although there are handlebars for them to hold on to, they can't steer. There's a linkage from the 2nd handlebar for the steering. The owner says the bikes have been popular with parents with kids that have autism, CP, etc.

The bike is modular so the front seat can be replaced with a baby seat. There's also a cargo basket that fits in place of the seat for doing grocery runs solo.

Kuat Hitch Racks

Kuat Hitch Bike Rack
The Kuat hitch racks are made out of aluminum and are very light unlike some of the other hitch racks I've had to lift. The Alpha weighs only 13 pounds! They are coming out with new racks that have more features and have trays for the bikes to sit on instead of hanging. Even these racks are light. The NV coming out next month will be 42 pounds but has a built-in bike repair stand and integrated cable lock.

The Kuat racks fit either 1.25 inch or 2 inch hitch receivers. Instead of having to reach around the bike to attach it with a bolt, it uses a cam that you can easily access on the side away from the car.

For more photos, you can check out my Interbike 2009 Outdoor Demo Day 1 album.

Bee Careful

I was just talking with a friend of mine last night about a terrifying mountain bike ride she did recently outside Steamboat Springs. She was riding a rough trail when she was attacked by angry bees. As she tried to brush them off and escape their rage, she hit a hard bump, was knocked head-first off her bike, and fell down a six-foot drop-off, landing in, of course, prickly weeds.

She’s OK, but she said she later heard that bees had attacked others on area trails, and that they are known to be especially angry this time of year. We wondered together if that happens in other places and on other trails.

Then I saw local climber/author Stewart Green’s blog on his climbing page at about.com and his post about bees attacking an Arizona climber last week on Camelback Mountain in Phoenix. According to Green, the climber disturbed a hive of Africanized honeybees. He tried to get away but was stranded on a cliff, and by the time he was rescued, he had been stung more than 120 times.

Green says this wasn’t the first time climbers and scramblers were attacked on that same mountain, including a 2004 attack when a climber tried to flee from the bees, fell, and was killed.

The Steamboat bees weren’t the deadly Africanized strain, but it’s still frightening to think about a bee attack on a trail. My friend and I wondered if there was anything she could have done to deter the bees.

The USDA posts some tips on its site. Most are common-sense stuff, and don’t offer any new advice for mountain bikers : "be careful when using machinery that produces sound vibrations or loud noises."(?)

The only tips that could apply to mountain biking or hiking:
  • Wear light-colored clothing.
  • Avoid wearing scents. Don’t even chew gum (which is scented).

Interbike 2009 Coverage

Interbike Outdoor Demo

Update: Posts from Interbike

Interbike is the largest bike show in North America and is held annually. Hundreds of companies with bike related products are there to show them to retailers, wholesale distributors and manufacturers. Many new products are announced at Interbike.

One of the cool things about Interbike is the first 2 days are outside at Bootleg Canyon near Las Vegas. This allows attendees to test out new bikes on the trails. The other 3 days are inside at the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas.

This year I'll be at Interbike to drool over the cool new products. I'll be posting as much as I can here on the blog while I'm there. Most likely I'll be posting even more on Twitter.

What would you like to hear about from Interbike? I'll do my best to get the scoop.

JensonUSA's Online Parking Lot Sale

Sale is now live but Jenson's site is taking a long time to load. Be patient and wait. Refreshing will make it take longer.

Starting at 9 AM PDT TODAY, JensonUSA is putting their once a year parking lot sale online for the first time. Product releases will be staggered so constant checking will be needed if you want to get some of these incredible once a year deals. Items could sell out quickly so move fast if there's something you want.

Here's what JensonUSA has to say about the sale
For nearly a decade JensonUSA has held a once a year sale to help sell Items that were returned and not sellable as NEW, and also to sell inventory that had been mishandled by various shipping methods. These Items are NOT damaged beyond use. They typically have superficial scratches, a small dent that does not effect performance, are missing original packaging, or were simply returned under our 30 day return policy and are perfectly fine.

These Sales were typically held on the premises in our back lot. Giving us the ability to also select regular stocked Items and apply a single day discount below anything natural. Unfortunately we have become TOO popular, and our sales were drawing enormous crowds. So to handle that we are moving the sale online.
Here's a sample of some of the sale items

  • Returned: Bianchi B4P 928Carb Dura Ace
Small chip in clear coat over carbon (EASY fix)
    Was: $5999.99 - - - - - >NOW: $2665

  • Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS Computer

Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Movie Trailer

Update 9/25/09: Leadville 100 mountain bike movie tickets are now on sale

Last week Citizen Pictures posted the trailer for the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike movie they're producing. It shows some of the awesome views you get during the race. Not that I notice much during the race but I know them well from training rides. Since they had a helicopter, they show a great bird's eye view of the Columbine Climb.

The movie is to be in theaters next month. I haven't found any info yet on when and where. I certainly hope it'll be here but I'd drive to Denver to see it. I talked to them briefly the day before the race but didn't get any more info than to keep checking the website.

I'll post more info once I get it.

New Garmin Edge 500 Cycling GPS

Garmin Edge 705 vs Edge 500
Garmin Edge 705 vs 500 (from Jake's Journal TwitPic)

Yesterday Garmin announced a new cycling GPS. The new unit is called the Edge 500. It was designed based on feedback from Team Garmin. It will give competitive cyclists the information they need while training and racing without weighing them down.

It weighs much less and is more aerodynamic than the Edge 705. It also looks much smaller than the older Edge 305. It uses a new mount that is low profile and appears easy to swap from one bike to another.

The Edge 500 also works with the Garmin ANT+ heart rate monitor strap and cadence/speed sensor. It also works with 3rd party power meters that support ANT+. They claim that there's improved calorie counting when using heart rate. That would be nice but I'm skeptical since I've never seen any calorie counting that seemed anywhere close at least for me.

The Edge 500 doesn't include the maps and routing of the Edge 705. It also doesn't include the ability to setup workouts like the 705.

The MSRP for the Edge 500 is $249.99 by itself and $349.99 when bundled with a heart rate monitor strap and speed/cadence sensor. That's not a bad price considering just downloadable Polar cycling heart monitors cost nearly that much not many years ago.

    2009 Leadville 100

The 2009 Leadville 100 was billed as the rematch between Dave Wiens and Lance Armstrong. I was there just to get my 6th finish. I'm far from the shape I was in when I finished top 20 in 2004.

Rainbow at the start of the Leadville 100 on Twitpic The race started under overcast clouds but the overnight rain had fortunately stopped. As we rolled out of town, there was a beautiful rainbow to the west. At one point it was straight in front of the pack and framed by the trees along the road. Only problem was it was where we were headed and that meant it was raining there.

I had woken up a few times in the night with my stomach not feeling good. I almost felt a little feverish. I also felt really off when I was getting ready to head out. It didn't concern me much because the way I feel right before a race has very little to do with how I feel once I get rolling.

Once we turned off the pavement onto the dirt road to St. Kevins, it was time to start riding hard. Unfortunately my legs refused. I'm not a fast starter and it can take a while for me to feel good. I still wasn't too concerned but my stomach still didn't feel right.

It didn't take too much longer to know my day wasn't going well. Soon I had to stop a couple times and empty my stomach of the little bit I had forced myself to drink.

Still hoping things would get better, I kept riding. By then freezing cold rain was pouring down. The descent down the pavement on the backside of Turquoise Lake wasn't much fun with the rain stinging my face.

Once we started climbing back up, it was clear I was going to be doing good just to get over the Sugarloaf climb. Without being able to eat, I was concerned about bonking and getting hypothermia. I decided to pull out at the Hagerman Pass road.

I still needed to get to the Pipeline aid station since my wife was waiting for me there. Somebody was nice enough to give me a ride part way there. While in the car, I started 2nd guessing whether I had made the right decision. Once I got dropped off and rode the couple miles to the aid station, I once again knew I had made the right decision.

I was really bummed to drop out but there are much worse things. Hopefully I'll get back in the entry lottery next year and get my 6th finish.

Lance Armstrong Wins 2009 Leadville 100 Wiens 2nd

Lance Armstrong Near Bottom of Powerline 2009 Leadville 100
The Leadville 100 mountain bike is a special race. Six of the last 8 years I’ve lined up early on a Saturday morning in August with hundreds of other mountain bikers. The 2 years I didn’t race myself, I was there to crew and spectate.

I finished the last 5 times I raced the Leadville 100. Some years I was fast and other years I was slow. This year I was in no shape to be fast but I thought I still had a good chance at finishing. Instead of finishing this year, I was sick from a stomach bug or something I ate the day before and dropped out after only 16 miles.

While I was having my issues near the back of the race, the lead group of riders was flying toward the Columbine Climb. It’s the longest climb of the race and tops out in thin air at 12,600 feet. Lance, taking a page out of his road racing, brought 4 late entries to help pace him to the bottom.

By the start of the climb only one rider was left with Lance. Six time winner Dave Wiens was just behind since he had made a quick stop at the Twin Lakes aid station which is just before the Columbine Climb. Lance was concerned about riding alone the rest of the way but was cold from the freezing rain so he went hard to warm up.

Lance Armstrong bottom of Columbine Climb, 2009 Leadville 100I arrived at the bottom of Columbine in plenty of time to see Lance come flying down. It was nearly 10 minutes before Wiens was down and another 7 minutes for 3rd place.

Next spot for spectating was the bottom of Powerline. Although the Powerline climb isn’t as long as Columbine, the very bottom is very steep and comes about mile 80 so it really hurts.

Between Lance being so fast and all the cars getting to the Powerline, I was still down close to the road and hadn’t gotten up to the steep part when he came through. It was amazing seeing a few hundred people lined up on the Powerline to see Lance. He said in some ways it was like the climbs in the Tour.

Dave Wiens on Powerline, 2009 Leadville 100I was told, not surprisingly, that Lance rode up the steep part. I was on the steep part when Dave Wiens came through and he walked part of it. Very few people ride all of it and most that do don’t go any faster than those that are walking.

Rather than go from the Powerline to the finish line, I stopped just outside of town where the Boulevard comes out to the pavement. I knew there was a big crowd at the finish line and I’d probably not get any where close.

Lance Nearing Finish, 2009 Leadville 100From the Powerline to the finish, Lance kept extending his lead. He got a leak in his rear tire a few miles out. He put air in it but it went flat again. He said he’s terrible at changing tires so he just kept riding.

Lance won in 6:28:50. This smashed the record of 6:45:45 that Dave Wiens set last year. Wiens came in for 2nd place with a time of 6:57:02

Dave Wiens Near Finish, 2009 Leadville 100Wiens didn't win but he said, "He’s Lance Armstrong. And he’s just off of the Tour," Wiens said after the race. "Last year he was just off of the couch. That made it a pretty fair fight for he and I. This year I rode fantastic today. I’m happy."

Lance said at the awards ceremony that he loves the race and plans to be back next year. I also plan to be next year and to finish for my 6th time.

I have some Leadville 100 photos uploaded. Superhuman magazine has once again created a great Leadville 100 video.

Spectating the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race

Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race Start
This Saturday morning well over a 1,000 mountain bikers will line up on 6th street in Leadville. It will still be dark and very chilly when they show up to secure their starting position for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race.

Many of the racers will be attempting to finish in under 9 hours to receive the coveted "big buckle". Many more will be there just hoping to finish under the 12 hour cut-off. At the front will be a handful attempting to beat 7 time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong.

Dave Wiens, 6 time Leadville 100 winner, has the best shot at beating Lance Armstrong. He accomplished it last year by just under 2 minutes. This year though Lance has been back racing in the Pro road peloton so I expect Wiens will have to ride faster to keep his winning streak alive. Tinker Juarez should also do well.

So with all the buzz from Lance racing the Leadville 100 for the 2nd time, you might be wondering how you can watch the Leadville 100. I don't know of any race day TV coverage although Citizen Pictures is planning a television show.

There will be a live webcast with 4 segments throughout the day. It will cost $5.95 for all 4 shows.

If you live close enough, you can view some great mountain bike racing and Colorado scenery. There are 3 good spots for watching the race. They are the Start/Finish, bottom of Powerline and on County Road 10. Another great place to watch would be at timberline on the Columbine Climb but the road is closed on race day since it's the course.

I have a Leadville 100 course map that'll give you an overview of the course. There are camera icons on it. Clicking on the icons will pop up a photo of that part of the course. It's a live Google Map so you can zoom in and pan around.

    Start/Finish

The Leadville 100 starts at the corner of 6th Street and Harrison Avenue. Harrison is also Highway 24 and the main route through Leadville. Harrison is closed the morning of the race. Near race time it's hard to find parking within a few blocks.

The race starts at 6:30 AM. It's interesting to hang out and see everyone getting ready. A little before the start, I recommend walking about 5 blocks down 6th Street so you're up on a little hill and can see the racers stretched out for blocks when the start.

If Lance breaks 6 hours like he thinks is possible, he'll be back to the finish a little before 12:30. I doubt it'll be much before 1:00 but you never know. The largest number of finishers will probably be coming in around 4-5 PM. The last riders will be rolling across the line as late as 7:30 PM.

Here are slideshows of Leadville 100 pre-race and start and finish in 2008.

    Bottom of Powerline

    Directions and Larger Maps

Powerline at Leadville 100The bottom of Powerline is a flying descent on the way out and a brutal climb headed back toward the finish. There's also a small creek crossing at the bottom that can be an entertaining spot to watch.

The Google Map above marks the dirt road that cuts back to the Powerline. The big cut running straight up the mountain is the Powerline. The paved road past the dirt road to the Powerline is closed race day because it's part of the course. Park along the road before that and walk in. Pay attention and stay out of the way of the racers.

The lead riders should be coming down Powerline just before 8 AM and be heading back up around 11:15. The last riders inbound will be a little after 3:30 PM.

Here are slideshows of racers coming down Powerline and of them heading up Powerline.

    County Road 10

    Directions and Larger Map

New Leadville 100 SingletrackCounty Road 10 is about 8 miles south of Leadville on US 24. It's then almost 2 miles to the intersection of County Road 24A. This is where the racers will be coming off the new singletrack and onto the road.

I expect the lead riders will be through around 8:30 AM outbound and coming back around 10:45. Likely there will be a few racers still headed outbound when the leaders return. The last riders will be back through around 3:00 PM.

Last Big Leadville 100 Training Weekend

Top of Columbine Climb at the Leadville 100
Posting has been light lately since I've been busy training for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race. Last weekend was my last big weekend of training.

Now it's too late for training to make much of a difference and too much riding will make me slower. I still need to do some riding for the next week to keep the legs fresh for race day though.

Since I didn't get in consistent training until the beginning of July, my fitness is far from where I need it to be. Like last year I'll be struggling to make the 12 hour time cut-off. I did it in 8 hours and 18 minutes in 2004 so that gives you some idea how far off my fitness is. Since this is my 6th time racing the Leadville 100, I at least have experience on my side.

The weekend before I raced the Silver Rush 50. I struggled to finish it but I could tell this last weekend that my fitness had taken a big jump. I know pushing myself through the Silver Rush when I didn't feel like it was a big part of it.

St. Kevin's Climb, Leadville 100I had too much to do at home so didn't leave until late Saturday afternoon. I got to Leadville in time to ride from the start to the top of the steep part of St. Kevins. On the way back I rode up the Boulevard. On race day it always takes longer than it seems it should. The ride was short with about 16 miles.

Since the biggest benefit from altitude comes when you're resting or sleeping, I drove up to timberline on the Columbine Mine climb and slept in the back of my vehicle. The elevation was about 11,700 feet. Sometimes when I sleep at that altitude I don't sleep well but I slept fine.

Sunday was my big day of pre-riding. I started by driving down to the bottom of the Columbine Climb. I met a few people training for the Leadville 100. Some are doing for the first time this year.

Columbine Mine Climb, Leadville 100We rode up to the top of the top of Columbine. It's a very long climb. The bottom isn't too steep but some sections about timberline are very steep. I felt stronger than I expected to so that was good.

Of course the fun part is coming back down. It's less fun on race day because racers are still going up and you're forced to ride through some loose, rocky sections.

Leadville 100 SingletrackOnce back down Columbine, I refilled water and Perpetuem. I then rode over to Twin Lakes and toward the Pipeline section. I got my first view of the new singletrack that replaces the old Cobra/North Face steep section.

The new singletrack is considerably longer. I expect it'll take a few minutes longer outbound. Since there's little room for passing it may even add more time since I'm a faster descender than most. Inbound it may not take much longer since it should be rideable instead of being a hike-a-bike section.

Powerline Climb, Leadville 100I rode on over to the base of the Powerline climb but I was really tired and low on energy when I got there. It was 20 miles back to my vehicle so I just turned around. I've seen it plenty of times so not pre-riding Powerline isn't a big deal.

I rode 57 miles of the course on Sunday. That gave me a total of 73 miles on the course for the weekend. I always like having it fresh in my mind for race day.

I've created a Leadville 100 course map from my pre-riding. I took several photos and the placed in the correct spots on the map. Just click the camera icons to view them do a virtual tour of the course. The part I didn't ride goes around the backside of Turquoise Lake and up Sugarloaf mountain.

Leadville 100 MTB FAQ: Should I Ride Through Creek at Bottom of Powerline?

Mountain Bike Crash in Creek at Bottom of Powerline
This post is part of the Leadville 100 MTB FAQ.

Planks Across Creek at Bottom of Powerline in 2009There's a small creek at the bottom of the Powerline. A lot of racers ask whether they should ride through it or walk the plank over by the bushes.

For 2009 it is no longer just a plank. The plank that has been there since I first raced the Leadville 100 broke. It's still there but 2 nice new planks have been added.

The water really isn't very deep and anyone with decent bike handling skills should be able to ride it. Even so a good rider could hit an hidden rock just wrong and crash. Outbound it is definitely faster to ride it if you don't crash. Inbound the time difference is small but riding the creek is still probably faster.

You still shouldn't ride through it even if you're a great bike handler. The water will do a good job of washing the lube off your chain. Then you'll get to listen to the annoying sound of a dry chain. Even worse you may lose much more time than you saved due to chain suck.

Sand Creek Series Final and State Games of America

The Sand Creek Series final is this Saturday. It's also the mountain bike race for the State Games of America. Today at 5 PM is the deadline to register online.

Racers will be doing 1 or 2 laps of the Falcon Trail at the Air Force Academy. First racers will start at 8 AM with other classes starting a few minutes after.

The start/finish will be just northwest of the Falcon Stadium parking lot. From the course map, it appears the start is across Academy Drive from the parking lot. Check the Sand Creek Sports site for more info.

It's a great course. I'm bummed because I'd like to race it. This is my last big training weekend for the Leadville 100 and I'll be training on the Leadville course instead.

    Silver Rush 50 for Training

    Silver Rush 50 Elevation Profile

Tomorrow I'll be doing the Silver Rush 50 mountain bike race in a desperate attempt to get some fitness for the Leadville 100. The Leadville 100 is only 3 weeks away and I've barely trained for it.

50 miles with 8,000 feet of climbing will hurt with my lack of fitness. No, it'll REALLY hurt but it should give my fitness a big jump. I'm guessing it'll take me a little over 6 hours.

Check twitter late in the afternoon to see how it went.

Leadville 100 MTB FAQ: Best Bike?

Bike Laid Out for Leadville 100 Start
This post is part of the Leadville 100 MTB FAQ.

The most important thing about a mountain bike for the Leadville 100 and for mountain biking in general is that you're fit properly on it. It's not uncommon for racers in Leadville to have back pain. One of the causes is using a bike that doesn't fit properly. Small changes can make a big change.

    Full Suspension or HardTail?

A lot of first time Leadville 100 racers wonder if a full suspension or hardtail bike is best. I think it was still true last year that over half the top 20 finishers were on hardtail bikes. Out of all the racers, It looks like more are using full suspension.

I've done Leadville 2 times on a full suspension and 3 on a hardtail. My fastest and slowest finishes were on the same hardtail mountain bike. Personally I don't see that a full suspension bike is an advantage except at the top of the Columbine Mine climb and descending Sugar Load inbound. However with the advances in full suspension designs the last few years, there isn't a big penalty in weight and efficiency on the rest of the course.

Riders that don't have as good of bike handling skills will do better on a full suspension bike. Also your back and arms should be less fatigued when riding full suspension. If you're unsure, I'd go with a full suspension bike.

From test riding, I like the Specialized Epic or the Intense Spider 2 but there are plenty of other good bikes. Because bikes have different geometries, different bikes may fit you better.

    29er, 26er or 69er?

29er mountain bikes have larger 29 inch wheels instead of the standard 26 inch mountain bike wheels. The advantage of the larger wheels is that they roll over obstacles better. The Leadville 100 course isn't that technical so I don't see them being an advantage but shouldn't hurt either.

I haven't found a 29er one that fits me right. This isn't unusual for shorter riders. That's where a 69er bike comes in. They have the larger 29 inch wheel on the front and a 26 inch wheel on the back. There are only a few of them on the market.

    Bottom Line

Any bike that fits you well and is reliable will work well at the Leadville 100. Your fitness and skills will make a much bigger difference. I wouldn't complain about racing on Lance Armstrong's 2008 Leadville 100 bike though.

    Colorado Springs Pro XCT

Max Plaxton Hops Up a Rock at Pro XCT #4 in Colorado Springs
It's been a long day so this is going to be a very short post. I had fun watching great racing at the CTS Sand Creek International Classic Pro XCT races today at Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

I talked to a few of the Pros after the races and they all liked the course. With all the racing, the rocks in the rock gardens were more exposed than in the past making them tougher to ride.

One section of trail was also taped off forcing the riders to go up a big rock. The top 10 Pro Men made it look easy but most of the others were getting off and running.

I took a lot of photos. I plan to post more but for now I have a few photos of each of the Pro races.

Colorado Springs Pro STXC Short Track Report

Pro Women at Colorado Springs Pro XCT Short Track

Heather Irminger Wins Colorado Springs Pro XCT Short TrackToday was the first of 2 days of top level mountain bike racing in Colorado Springs. The Pro XCT Short Track was held on a course with a lot of tight singletrack and lap times under 3 minutes. Racers said it was tough to move up except on the short climb on a wide gravel path on the backside.

In the Pro Women's race, a group of 4 formed at the front with Heather Irminger, Katie Compton, Catherine Pendrel and Katerina Nash. With a couple laps to go, Irminger and Compton opened a small gap.

Todd Wells and Jeremy Horgan-KobelskiIn the end hometown girl Compton couldn't get around Irminger coming out of the final corner and had to settle for 2nd. Catherine Pendrel rounded out the top 3.

In the Pro Men's race, it didn't take Todd Wells and Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski long to open up a gap on the rest of the field. Wells pulled off the win with JHK coming in 2nd. Geoff Kabush finished out the podium.

The racing continues tomorrow at Cheyenne Mountain State Park with the cross-country race. I wrote some about the cross-country course a few days ago.

Starting tomorrow (Saturday) at 6PM, Peak Region Cyclist is hosting a party at McCabe's Tavern downtown. Racers 1st drink is free with race number. There will be food and drink specials for everyone. Band starts at 9 PM.

I have posted more photos of the short track and cross country races.

    CTS Sand Creek International Classic

Cougar's Shadow at Cheyenne Mountain State Park

Update: Pro XCT Race Report | Short Track Race Report

CTS Sand Creek International Classic Course MapNext weekend will have the most competitive mountain bike racing Colorado Springs has seen. The CTS Sand Creek International Classic is being held at Cheyenne Mountain State Park. It is one of only 7 mountain bike races in the US this year with international ranking points. Most of the top mountain biking Pros are registered to race.

The race isn't just for the Pros. It's part of the Sand Creek Series and will have all of the categories. See the race flyer for start times and number of laps. Pre-entry online is encouraged and closes on Wednesday.

Although we have some better mountain biking trails, the Cheyenne Mountain SP course is nice. For a race of this level, there needs to be easy access and room for an expo area. For those reasons, Cheyenne Mountains SP was chosen.

CTS Sand Creek International Classic Course ProfileMost of the 1st half of the course is climbing. There's a little up and down across the top before descending back to the start/finish. When I rode it, I got 5.02 miles and 1,070 feet of climbing. The official course GPS track has 4.9 miles and 960 feet.

Cheyenne Mountain from Cheyenne Mountain State ParkThe lower part of the course is open with plenty of places to pass. It'll be hard to pass on the first part of Cougar's Shadow but it's possible to pass just before it on the Blackmer Loop.

Originally the rocky, technical Medicine Wheel Trail was part of the course. It was taken out due to concerns about it being a bottle neck at the start of the race.

The lower trails have been covered with crushed limestone to reduce mud. When it's dry, it can be easy to slide on it. Some of the upper parts of Blackmer Loop and Cougar's Shadow don't have the limestone.

Rock Garden at Zook Loop and Blackmer LoopMost of the course is non-technical but there are some tricky rock sections on Cougar's Shadow. There's a rock garden at the junction of Zook Loop and Blackmer Loop. The course designer told me he thought it would be faster to run it but I was able to easily ride it without slowing much.

I've created a Google Map of the CTS Sand Creek International Classic course. If you click on the camera icons, you'll get photos of that part of the course.

The USA Cycling National Series Short Track Cross Country race is also Friday afternoon/evening. It will be held at Bear Creek Terrace on some of the same trails as the Wednesday evening Sand Creek races.

    Zipline Trail Building

    Zipline Trail Building
There was really good turn out today to build the Zipline trail. Over 30 people worked different parts of the day with Medicine Wheel. Zipline will connect the Section 16 parking lot to the Bear Creek Main Trail. The map above shows the section of Zipline that is now built.

Here are a few more photos.

    Another Colorado Springs Trail

    Zipline Trail, Colorado Springs
I'm fortunate to live where there are plenty of trails for mountain biking, hiking, running and even cross-country skiing on the occasions we actually get enough snow. Now Medicine Wheel is building another trail.

The new trail is currently being called Zipline. It will be an important connector between Section 16/Red Rock Canyon/ and the Bear Creek Main Trail.

I frequently connect between those trails. Now it means riding about a mile on a narrow, paved section of Gold Camp Road. It will be much nicer to ride singletrack to make the connection.

This Sunday, May 31st, is a trail building day for Zipline. No previous trail building experience is needed and all tools are provided. I've worn blisters building trail so you may want to take a pair of gloves.

There are 3 different shifts starting at 10 AM, Noon or 4 PM. Please send an email to Jim at jim@medwheel.org so he knows you're coming. See the Medicine Wheel page for more details.

CTS Sand Creek Series #1 Photos

It was cool and overcast for the 1st race of the 2009 CTS Sand Creek Series. Just before the start of the Pro/Expert race, it started drizzling. I wasn't able to stay so I don't know how long it lasted for them. There were about 100 racers combined between the 3 races.

I took a lot of photos. Here are a few of them and I'll try to get more posted in a few days.

CTS Sand Creek Series Kicks Off This Sunday

    2008 Sand Creek Series #3

The 7 race CTS Sand Creek Series kicks off this Sunday at Bear Creek Park. The race course loop will be done in the clockwise direction for this race.

There will be 3 different race start times with the Experts/Pros going last. I've copied the start times and categories below. Check the official race flyer and the Sand Creek website for details.

I won't be racing this time since I'm having trouble getting fit. If it wasn't Mother's Day I might go ahead and race. I plan to stop by for a little while but can't stay the whole time.

In addition to racing, there will be mountain bikes to demo at Bear Creek. I have the complete Sand Creek Series schedule posted.

Mountain Bike Demos this Weekend in Colorado Springs

    Intense Spider 2 Mountain Bike
Today and tomorrow you can test out new mountain bikes in Colorado Springs. Intense, Kona, Rocky Mountain and Scott will be here with their demo bikes. With the demo bikes, you can generally do much more riding than even during a test ride at your local bike shop.

A couple weeks ago at the Fruita Fat Tire Festival, I demoed the Intense Spider 2. I rode a couple hours at the Grand Junction Lunch Loops. It was the last day and they were going to be packing up or I think they would have let me ride even longer. Intense has a demo schedule on their site so you can see if they'll be in your area.

Today the demo is at Palmer Park so there will be plenty of opportunity to ride on technical trails. Tomorrow will be at Bear Creek Park for the kick off to the CTS Sand Creek Series. Both days the demos are from 9 AM to 6 PM.

In addition to the mountain bike demos, there will be 2 mountain bike movies shown at Stargazers Theater on Parkside Drive. Both New World Disorder 9 and the new Red Bull Rampage "The Evolution" will be shown.

The demos and movie are brought to you by Ascent Cycling. You can read the announcement on their blog

White Acres Fundraising with Steve Weaver's Photos

Badwater Reflection, Death Valley National Park
Professional photographer and geologist Steve Weaver displayed his beautiful landscape photographs at the White Acres celebration last Sunday. Steve has offered to donate 40% of any sales of his photographs through the coming week to the White Acres - Section 16 Fund. $75,000 of private money needs to be raised by November 15th.

A couple photographs of his that I really like are of Arches National Park and Badwater. He has many more beautiful photos.

Fruita Fat Tire Festival 2009 Day 1

Fruita Fat Tire Festival, Rustler Loop
The 2009 Fruita Fat Tire Festival was 2 weekends ago. Although in the past I've been out there to race on the same weekend, I never took part in the Festival. This year Yeti from UpaDowna twisted my arm and got me to go. Ok, maybe he didn't have to do any arm twisting.

Unfortunately I came down with a cold on Tuesday. By Thursday I was feeling well enough that I thought I'd get some good riding in on Friday.

Friday morning we went by the expo area but didn't stay long because the kids wanted to go ride. We went out to the Kokopelli Trailhead. I hooked up the trail-a-bike for 4 year old C and 6 year old D went on her bike.

Cacti blooming on Rustlers Loop near Fruita, COWe started riding Mary's loop since I think of the first part as being easy. It was soon clear it wasn't easy enough. C said it was too bumpy on the trail-a-bike and D was off pushing too much.

We switched to Rustlers Loop. C still thought it was too bumpy. She got off and wasn't getting back on. My wife ended up taking her back to the car.

Mountain Biking Rustlers Loop near Fruita, COD wanted to keep riding for a little while. She ended up doing the whole 3.6 mile loop and walked very little. It was her first true mountain bike ride.

I was wiped out from being sick so instead of riding more and checking out cool stuff at the expo, I ended up going and taking a nap. We did go back down for the party in the evening and here was a good band playing. We didn't stay very long since the kids were tired and I still wasn't very energetic myself.

    White Acres Open Space Celebration

    White Acres, Colorado Springs
It is finally time to do some celebrating over the White Acres Open Space deal. Yesterday Colorado Springs made the final approval to acquire it for open space. It has been nearly a year since I first attended a TOPS Working Committee meeting on it.

I spoke in favor of it at the Colorado Springs council meeting a couple weeks ago when they voted unanimously for it. Yesterday's vote was just part of the required process and on the consent calendar. The 2nd vote though does allow a chance for a decision to be changed.

To celebrate the approval there will be a party and picnic this Sunday, May 3rd any time from 1-4 PM. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the afternoon. It will be at the pavilion on White Acres. There will be music, hiking and an art show and sale benefiting White Acres.

The pavilion is just up from the 5-way intersection of South 26th Street, Wheeler, Lower Gold Camp, Bear Creek Road, and Gold Camp Road. Since there is limited parking at the pavilion, please park on the gravel strip on the south side of Lower Gold Camp just east of the intersection. You can see the intersection in my Google map of White Acres.

Because of the limited TOPS funds this year, Friends of Red Rock Canyon and the Palmer Land Trust are cooperating in an effort to raise $75,000 for White Acres by November 15th. Any extra money raised will go toward the $640,000 needed to purchase Section 16 soon after. You can donate now online through the White Acres Pikes Peak Community Foundation Fund.

Cyclist Leg Shaving Questions and Answers

To Shave or Not to Shave Legs
It's long been a tradition for male cyclists to shave their legs. I think there are more reasons for mountain bikers to shave their legs but fewer do. Here are answers to some common questions about cyclists and shaving their legs.

Why Do Cyclist and Mountain Bikers Shave Legs?

Most people think that shaving is so cyclists are faster because of better aerodynamics. That really isn't much of a reason why male cyclists shave their legs. Read Top 5 Reasons Cyclists Shave Their Legs to find out the real reasons.

    How to Shave Legs?

When I shave my legs, I'm more into simple than perfect so I just use the electric shaver that I use to shave my face. Coach Levi has a detailed post on how to shave legs and do it better than I do. He even includes a video of the process.

    How Much to Shave?

I've heard it said to shave up to where whitie tighties fit. Personally I stop a little short of that except I shave nearly to my waist on the outside of the hip. The outside of the hip is a likely place to get road rash and pulling bandages off along with hair is no fun. Once again Coach Levi takes it a step further and explains how to shave based on your reason for shaving your legs.

    How Often to Shave?

I'm sure there are individual differences but most guys have stubble on their legs within 3 days of shaving. Even so I don't shave more than once a week. I also only shave during the summer when I'm riding in shorts. I know a few guys that shave year round but I think most cyclists don't shave during the winter.

Important Colorado Spings White Acres Vote Tomorrow

    White Acres Near Colorado Springs
Update 4/14/09: White Acres acquisition was passed unanimously by the Colorado Springs City Council. It won't be effective until the 2nd reading of the ordinance on April 28th but it should just be on the consent calendar. Now Friends of Red Rock Canyon Open Space need to raise $75k by December but the Palmer Foundation is helping out.

The Colorado Springs City Council will vote on purchasing White Acres for open space tomorrow. This is the most important vote. There's support on council for the purchase but there's also some uncertainty.

Read through my past White Acres posts for more info about it. The White Acres Google Map shows how it fits in with Red Rock Canyon Open Space and Section 16.

If possible, please come to show your support for White Acres Open Space. The meeting is at the Colorado Springs City Hall April 14th at 1:00 PM. White Acres is the first 2 items of new business on the agenda. There are several other items before new business so it's hard to tell how soon they'll get to White Acres.

    Fundraising Event

In related news, Pizzeria Rustica will donate the proceeds from its Earth Week Passport to Tuscany" wine dinner toward the White Acres acquisition. The five course dinner will feature five selected wines from Tuscany/Umbria paired with five Tuscan dishes.

COST: $49 plus tax and tip

2009 Lake Pueblo Arkansas Point Challenge

    Mountain Biking at Pueblo Reservoir
Photo from Southern Colorado Trail Builders

The mountain bike race at Pueblo Reservoir has long been a good early season race for Colorado Front Range racers to fine tune their fitness. This years edition is on Sunday, April 26th. You can register online using SportsBaseOnline. Online registration closes April 23rd. The race flyer also has an entry form and more info on the race.

It is once again being put on by the Southern Colorado Trail Builders. They currently don't have any info on their website and haven't replied to my email from a few weeks ago. Great Divide Bike & Ski confirmed this week it is on and gave me the info on online registration.

Pueblo Reservoir is a great place to go mountain bike this time of the year. It is generally warmer and dryer than most of the Colorado Front Range. I need to get down there and do some riding with my new Garmin Edge 705.

How to Train? - Bike Handling Skills: Leadville 100 MTB FAQ

    Leadville 100 Powerline Descent
This post is part of the Leadville 100 MTB FAQ.

Although training for aerobic fitness is the biggest part of a successful Leadville 100, mountain bike handling skills can give you the extra edge to make your time goal. They can even be the difference between finishing or not. Skills can make the difference between making the official finish cut-off or not.

Being able to descend faster or maintain more of your speed through corners is like free energy. In a 100 mile mountain bike race, you can use all the free energy you can get. As with most things, practice is what will improve your handling skills.

    Practice Speed

One way to improve your mountain bike skills is to pick a downhill section with plenty of turns that you can ride in 5-10 minutes. The section doesn't need to be steep downhill. It can even be rolling as long as you can keep a decent speed.

Ride the section a few times and time yourself. See how much you can improve your time. One thing to focus on is keeping your speed in the turns so you don't have to accelerate as much as you come out of the turn.

Once you feel comfortable on the section and aren't improving your time much, pick another section and repeat.

    Ride Technical Sections

Another way to improve your mountain bike handling skills is to try riding technical sections on your normal rides even if you don't think you can. If you don't make it, try a few times before you continue on. Of course use common sense and don't do something that is almost certain to cause an injury.

    Ride with Others

Riding with others will improve your handling skills especially if they're better than you. Being with someone else will get your competitiveness going and you'll try harder without even realizing it. Ride behind someone else and watch to see which lines and techniques they use.

Gold Bar Rim Singletrack and Portal Trail

View from Gold Bar Rim Singletrack
Moab Rock FormationYesterday I rode what has become one of my favorite Moab rides after a few readers recommended it last year when I asked for favorite Moab rides. I make a loop that includes Gold Bar Rim and then over to the Portal Trail and down.

UltraRob on Edge of Gold Bar RimI started from downtown Moab and rode out the old highway to the Gemini Bridges parking lot. From there I headed up the road until the Gold Bar Rim jeep road split off to the left.

View of Colorado River from Gold Bar RimOnce the Gold Bar Rim jeep road makes it to the rim, there's a very technical singletrack that follows right along the rim edge. Sometimes it is literally on the rim edge. This year there was fresh blue paint marking the singletrack and it was much easier to follow. I had to get off several times because of drops. It was well worth it for the views and the fun trying to ride what I could. I was thinking though a freeride bike would have been better than my hard tail.

Portal Trail near Moab, UTA storm was coming in and before I got to the Portal Trail, the clouds started moving in. I thought I saw rain in the distance so I tried to keep moving at a good pace. About the time I got back into Moab, I discovered it was a giant dust cloud instead of rain.

The Portal Trail is not a trail for people that are scared of heights. The upper part of the trail crosses close to the edge and a few people have fallen off. It really isn't that bad as long as you get off and walk and pay attention. Once across the narrow section, it's a very technical descent to the Potash road but it isn't on the edge.

I have the Moab Gold Bar Rim - Portal Trail GPS track uploaded. It also has small photos placed on it. I also have photos of the ride on Flickr.

    Moab Slickrock Trail Mountain Biking

    Moab Slickrock Trail
Moab Slickrock TrailThe Slickrock trail is one of Moab's most popular mountain biking trails. It is one of the most unique trails around. I've ridden small amounts of slickrock in other places but I don't of anywhere else where you're surrounded by miles of rock.

I've ridden Slickrock several times over the years but it had been a while since I had done it. Yesterday I decided it was time to revisit it and rode up there. It's not a steady endurance ride but instead an interval workout. You go all out to get up a steep section of slickrock and then recover and get ready to go hard again.

Moab Slickrock TrailAlthough there were clouds, it was nice and warm. The views were incredible and I had a lot of fun riding around on the rock.

Because it's sandstone, you get amazing traction and if you have the leg strength, you can ride up some very steep sections. One tip is to use a tire without a lot of tread to increase the contact area. Leg strength and balance though will generally limited you more than traction.

I was riding up a steep section yesterday and was running out of power. I hit a bump and stopped going forward. I started rolling backward and couldn't get off gracefully. I slammed my knee into the headset. I got a nasty bruise and some soreness but thankfully it doesn't seem like a serious injury.

I started with the Practice Loop since practice is always good. I got in 18.2 miles, 2908 feet of climbing in 3:14.

I have the Moab Slickrock GPS track uploaded. It also has small photos placed on it. I also have photos of the ride on Flickr.

Mountain Biking Gunnison Bluffs/Old Spanish Trail

Gunnison Bluffs Trail near Grand Junction, CO
Yesterday I spent the day in Grand Junction on the way to Moab. There's lots of mountain bike riding in the area including the Tabeguche Lunch Loops and trails in Fruita. The Colorado National Monument also is a nice road ride.

Over the 2 days before, I had spent about 7 hours crawling around on my hardwood floors re-coating them which had left my body not feeling so great. That was followed by a 5+ hour drive. I was pretty sure my legs weren't going to be very happy riding. I wanted to do a fairly easy ride to spin the legs out.

Gunnision Bluff Trail near Grand Junction, COThe trailhead for the Gunnision Bluffs/Old Spanish Trail is less than 1/2 mile from my aunt and uncle's house. In spite of my many visits, I had never ridden the trail. This seemed like the perfect time to finally go ride it.

View of Grand Mesa from Old Spanish Trail near Grand Junction, COFor the most part, Gunnison Bluffs and Old Spanish Trail are non-technical double track. There are a few steep hills but they aren't long. The trail follows along the top of the Bluffs along the Gunnision River. There are also good views of the Grand Mesa.

The Gunnision Bluffs/Old Spanish Trail is a good ride if you're in the Grand Junction area and want to do a nice spin. I ended up with 14.87 miles 1211 vertical feet and a ride time of 2:00:30

You can view the Gunnison Bluffs/Old Spanish Trail Google Map and elevation profile. I have photos marked on the map but most of them aren't linked yet.

Garmin Edge 705 Tip - Save Last Ride and Reset

Garmin Edge 705 GPSThe downloadable bike computer I've used in the past would create a new ride if I stopped recording and then restarted. I figured the Garmin Edge 705 would work the same way. I have found out that this is not the case. In fact turning the unit off and back on does not create a new ride.

When I connect it to the computer with the USB cable, it shows that it is saving history. I want to save all of my rides but I don't want to connect it to the computer after each ride.

After searching around, I found that pressing the lap button for a couple seconds saves the current ride and resets the miles, vertical feet, etc. A little box pops up that says resetting data and counts down 3..2..1.

    Cycling and Outdoor Gear Winner

This past week, I've enjoyed reading what readers would buy with a $50 gift card and what adventure they'd use it on. Mike Panic is the lucky winner of the $50 cycling and outdoor gear giveaway. Congratulations!

    This is what he said.
Thank you! I've been looking / wanting a new travel bag, my Thor MX bag is too big to take for most week-long trips and I'm going to St. Thomas in June and need a manageable bag to carry a week's worth of clothing. While I should be buying new running shoes or a new rear derailleur for my road bike, I feel this Gravis bag in Rebel Yellow would be the best use of the $50 for me right now to help me schlep my gear to a sunny island this summer. I'll even send you a postcard!

Oh, I still need to purchase Thule LB50 load bars to complete the roof rack system I pieced together this winter.
Mike, I'm looking forward to the postcard! To claim your gift card, send me an email with your choice of cycling and outdoor gift card.

White Acres Open Space Passes 2nd Vote

    White Acres, Colorado Springs

There was some more good news for White Acres this past week. On Thursday the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board unanimously approved TOPS acquisition of White Acres as open space. I was there along with about another dozen people to support the acquisition.

The next meeting about the White Acres open space acquisition will be on April 14th with the city council. This will most likely be the most important meeting. There is some support for White Acres on city council but also some uncertainty.

Friends of Red Rock Canyon have decided to not begin fundraising until city council has approved the acquisition. Originally they had planned to start immediately but felt there could be some issues with that. They need to raise $75,000 this year as part of the deal. Even so they do have commitments from some large donors already.

I've put together a Google Map of White Acres that also shows Section 16 and Red Rock Canyon Open Space. I don't know the exact boundaries especially for Red Rock Canyon but I think I got them fairly close. It also has some of the area trails.

If you're on Facebook, I also created a Save White Acres Cause. You can use it to help spread the word. It'll also be another way to get updates and share information on White Acres.

Crank Brothers Multi 17 Tool Review

Crank Brothers Multi 17 ToolI found my first Crank Brothers Multi 17 Tool during the middle of the night when I was racing the 24 Hours of Moab solo. I don't normally stop for dropped gear on the trail during a race. I didn't even see the multi tool. It was inside a sock and I had a need for the sock.

I had a couple other multi-tools so finding the Crank Brothers Multi 17 Tool was no big deal. Then I realized it had a chain tool. I had been carrying both a multi tool and a chain tool. I didn't always remember the chain tool and had broken a chain when I didn't have a tool.

It was easier to keep track of one tool and the Crank Brothers tool became the tool I carried on rides. Somehow I ended up losing the one I had found. I liked it so much that rather than switching back to one of my other multi-tools, I bought a new Crank Brothers Multi 17 Tool.

Crank Brothers also makes a Multi 19 tool that has the same tools except it has 2 sizes of flat and Phillips screwdrivers instead of one of each. There have been a few times I could have used a different sized screwdriver but not often.

Crank Brothers Multi 17 Tool Likes

    • It has a tool to fix almost every mechanical on the trail or road
    • It folds fairly flat and compact so is comfortable in a jersey pocket or easy to slip in a seat bag
    • Well made and durable

Crank Brothers Multi 17 Tool Dislikes

    • The chain tool is tricky to get lined up right and doesn't have good leverage. Still you can get the chain fixed and not have to walk.

Crank Brothers Multi 17 Tool Specs

    • Weight: 168 grams
    • Dimensions: 4.3 x 8.9 inches
    • Tool material: 6051 High Tensile Steel
    • Frame material: 6061-T6 Aluminum
    • 8/9/10 Speed Chain Tool
    • 1/2/3/4 Spoke Wrenches
    • 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 Hex Wrenches
    • 1 Phillips and 1 Flat-head Screwdriver
    • 8mm and 10mm Wrenches

Get Free Cycling and Outdoor Gear

Update 3/16/09: The gear winner has been announced.

Everyone loves to get some cool new gear. It's even better if it's free. You have a chance to win some free gear this week.

I am giving away a $50 gift certificate to the winner's choice of these cycling and outdoor stores. Deadline to enter is Sunday, March 15th. To enter use the search box to find your gear. Then tell me in the comments below what gear you'll get if you win and what adventure you'll use it on.

You don't have to limit the price of your gear but if it's more than $50 you'll need to use some of your own money. Put some thought into your comment because the winner will be mostly random but if you write something I like you could increase your odds.

The winner will be announced on Monday, March 16th. The winner will have until Wednesday, March 18th to contact me with the choice of gift certificate. It'll be easiest if you pick one that has electronic certificates.

Subscribe to the blog feed so you don't miss out on future giveaways.

    Good Luck!

Update: I really intend for this to be easy to enter. As long as you aren't lame and don't try, you'll have a good chance at winning since I'll pick a random number. You just need to write something simple like I'd buy a headlamp so I can go on a moonlight hike. If you do write something really cool, I'll enter you twice.

How to Train? - Periodization: Leadville 100 MTB FAQ

    Dave Wiens Descending Powerline
This post is part of the Leadville 100 MTB FAQ.

Periodiation is the training philosophy of breaking training into blocks. The 3 basic periods are base, build and peak/race. Some coaches also use transition and preparation periods but I like to just think of them as the off-season. The focus of training in each block changes depending on how close it is to race season or if it is during race season.

Blocks are typically 4-6 weeks in duration. The time and/or intensity increase each week with the last week being a recovery week. I've always done 4 week blocks. When I'm doing a lot of intensity or volume, I can be ready for a recovery week by the 3rd week. 6 week blocks though might work during early base training.

A recovery week is needed to allow the body to rebuild and get stronger. Not doing recovery weeks can lead to injuries or illness. Recovery weeks are also called rest weeks but you still do a reduced amount of training.

I record my training weeks from Monday through Sunday. I had a coach that wanted it that way. At first I thought it was strange but then figured out it made a lot of sense. If you have a normal work schedule, you can do your longest rides on the weekends. If you switch your longest ride back and forth between Saturday and Sunday, your weekly totals will be inconsistent if you record Monday through Saturday.

I also keep track of training in time and not miles. I do a fair amount of my training on the road. A mile on the road is much easier than on the mountain bike. A ride with lots of climbing is much tougher than a flat ride. Time gives a more consistent training measure than miles. You can also account easily for cross-training.

    Off-Season

During the off-season, it's important to stay fit but it's also a good time to do some cross-training. The off-season is also a good time to work on handling skills. Although I don't consider the Leadville 100 course very technical, lots of new racers are intimated by the long, fast downhills. The steep climbing sections also require excellent balance and weight distribution to keep from spinning out.

    Other Training Phases

The other 3 training phases are covered in separate posts.
    • Base Training (coming soon)
    • Build Phase (coming soon)
    • Peak/Race (coming soon)

White Acres Acquisition Passes 1st of 3 Votes

White Acres near Colorado Springs, Colorado

I've been blogging quite a bit about White Acres. Hopefully it's not growing old for non-locals. It's a property I really don't want to be developed. It's visible from much of Colorado Springs and is surrounded by land that won't be developed. Red Rock Canyon Open Space is on the north, Section 16 is to the west and Bear Creek Canyon Park is to the southeast. There are a few houses hidden in the trees in Bear Creek Canyon but they're barely noticeable.

White Acres TrailThe photo above from SaveWhiteAcres.org and the GPS track to the right from one of my recent rides show why I'm passionate about this land. Without the critical section of social trail through the property, it wouldn't be possible to make the big trail loop with Red Rock Canyon and Section 16. Even though the development plan seems to allow for the trail, having houses would ruin the beauty and solitude.

Last week the White Acres annexation petition was postponed a 2nd time because a deal to buy it for open space seemed possible. An article in Tuesday's Gazette led many to believe the White Acres deal was approved. That is not the case. Although a deal is in fact on the table, the article ends by saying the deal still needs approval. It seems not everyone read that far.

White Acres Trail, Colorado SpringsThe asking price for White Acres has been dropped from $1.375 million to $1 million. More important is that the full purchase price isn't required now like it was when city council voted it down last year. Instead the purchase will be spread over 4 years.

One key thing that wasn't mentioned in the Gazette article is that this year, $75,000 of private money will need to be raised by December. Only $25,000 of TOPS funds are being committed this year by the city. If the private fundraising fails, the whole deal would most likely fall through. This is the only year private funding is required.

Friends of Red Rock Canyon will be doing the fundraising. They plan to have online donations set up by next week. In the unfortunate event that the deal doesn't go through, donations will be used for the eventual purchase of Section 16.

Although the purchase will be spread over 4 years, the remaining property will be leased for $1 until all parcels are purchased. The farthest west parcel will be the 1st purchased followed by the hogback. The south parcel along Gold Camp Road will be the 3rd and the 4th parcel will be the north parcel along Gold Camp. This means the land least suited to development will be bought first with the best land for development being left to last.

A 5th parcel will be donated which is a slice for the extension of 31st street that's been on the master plan for decades. I don't think it's likely 31st will be extended but the city wants to keep it's options open. Land bought with TOPS funds can only be used for open space. A 6th parcel isn't being bought by the city. The house at the 5 way stop at 26th, Gold Camp and Bear Creek Road is on this parcel.

I was at the TOPS Working Committee meeting yesterday morning. There were over a dozen citizens there in favor of the White Acres Acquisition. If anyone was against it, they didn't say anything. The committee voted unanimously to recommend acquisition with very little discussion.

The next vote will be by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board next week on Thursday March 12th. From what I heard, they will support acquisition.

The bigger unknown is whether city council will support the deal. I've heard there is support for it but its tough to know. They are dealing with a lot of other issues. It'll be key for everyone to make it to the council meeting on April 14th if at all possible.

Falcon Trail at Air Force Academy Google Map

As I mentioned in my first impressions Garmin Edge 705 Review, I'm trying out some of the GPS software. So far I haven't tried to navigate unfamiliar places or improve my training.

I've been experimenting with making cool maps of my rides to improve my ride reports. Hopefully I'll be able to provide some more detailed route information for those of you that want to head out on your own adventures.

One of the things I've done is use TopoFusion to geotag my photos from a mountain bike ride on the Falcon Trail in the Air Force Academy. I then linked them in Google Earth. From there I created a page that embeds a Google Map of the Falcon Trail.

Up in the upper right corner, you can choose to view Map, Satellite, Hybrid, Terrain, Earth, USGS Topo and USGS Aerial. I like the Earth one which gives a 3D view the best. It requires that the Google Earth plugin be installed so I haven't made it the default view. I've also seen the trail and the clickable photos disappear. Reloading the page seems to be needed to get them back. The view I like 2nd best is Terrain so I've made it the default.

How do you like the Falcon Trail map? How can I make it better?
