Will Lance and Leipheimer Crush Leadville 100 Record?

Lance Armstrong at 2008 Leadville 100
In an interview on VeloNews, Lance Armstrong says he is bringing Levi Leipheimer to the Leadville 100 in August. He says the Tour de France and his other races are just a build up to Leadville. He says "seriously" and then he gives a big smile. This years race is August 15th.

He thinks with a strong group of racers they can bring the record down close to 6 hours. Dave Wiens set the record last year at 6:45 with Lance at 6:47. In 2007 Wiens set the old record of 6:58 with Floyd Landis pushing him. My personal record is 8:18.

Dave Wiens has won the last 6 years. He's a Colorado native and is a huge favorite of the racers and fans. I'm sure he'll come in top form and I hope he makes it win #7.

I'm sure I'll just get glimpse of the top riders on their way down as I start my crawl up the Columbine Climb. I'll be going to my 6th Leadville finish.

Fruita Fat Tire Festival 2009 Day 1

Fruita Fat Tire Festival, Rustler Loop
The 2009 Fruita Fat Tire Festival was 2 weekends ago. Although in the past I've been out there to race on the same weekend, I never took part in the Festival. This year Yeti from UpaDowna twisted my arm and got me to go. Ok, maybe he didn't have to do any arm twisting.

Unfortunately I came down with a cold on Tuesday. By Thursday I was feeling well enough that I thought I'd get some good riding in on Friday.

Friday morning we went by the expo area but didn't stay long because the kids wanted to go ride. We went out to the Kokopelli Trailhead. I hooked up the trail-a-bike for 4 year old C and 6 year old D went on her bike.

Cacti blooming on Rustlers Loop near Fruita, COWe started riding Mary's loop since I think of the first part as being easy. It was soon clear it wasn't easy enough. C said it was too bumpy on the trail-a-bike and D was off pushing too much.

We switched to Rustlers Loop. C still thought it was too bumpy. She got off and wasn't getting back on. My wife ended up taking her back to the car.

Mountain Biking Rustlers Loop near Fruita, COD wanted to keep riding for a little while. She ended up doing the whole 3.6 mile loop and walked very little. It was her first true mountain bike ride.

I was wiped out from being sick so instead of riding more and checking out cool stuff at the expo, I ended up going and taking a nap. We did go back down for the party in the evening and here was a good band playing. We didn't stay very long since the kids were tired and I still wasn't very energetic myself.

Colorado Bike Safety Bill Passes

3 feet to pass logo
The Colorado Bike Safety Bill (SB 148) passed this week. The bill went through a surprisingly complex legislative process, including two conference committees. As noted by House Speaker Terrance Carroll at last weekend's Bicycle Colorado Gala, even the state budget with about a billion dollars of budget cuts didn't go through two conference committees.

The bill sponsors, Senator Greg Brophy and Representative Michael Merrifield, worked diligently to ensure the bill passage throughout its many votes. Their strong support of safe roads has made them valuable partners for the bicycling community.

Governor Ritter, an avid cyclist, is expected to sign the bill. It's possible he'd sign it during a ceremony at the Elephant Rock Ride on June 7th. It would then go in to effect on August 4th.

The main safety provisions of the bike safety bill are

Passing

Motorists are required to give cyclist 3 feet of clearance when passing. To keep traffic from backing up on narrow, winding mountain roads, they added a provision for motorists to cross the center when safe and clear to do so.

Lane Position

The law requires bicyclists to ride as far right as they feel is safe. The key here is that the cyclist is the one to decide how far right is safe. Also cyclists will be allowed to ride on the left side of the road on one way roads with more than one lane.

Two Abreast

The bill clarifies that bicyclists may pass one another or ride side-by-side if they are not impeding the normal and reasonable movement of traffic.

Anti-Harassment

The bill increases penalties for harassing cyclists. The actual wording is projecting any missile at or against a bicyclist. Missiles are defined as any object or substance. Harassing a cyclist will be a class 2 misdemeanor.

By this definition, I've had missiles used against me. I've had bottles thrown at me, pop bottle rockets shot at me, ice thrown at me and other harassment while riding my bike.

According to an article in the Colorado Daily, Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle believes that the Colorado bike safety bill gives cyclists carte blanche. He says cyclist will be able to ride however they want without being able to prosecute them.

I think that most cyclist would agree with me that we'd rather stay alive than ride wherever we want to. The bill will allow law enforcement to better protect cyclists on the road if they choose to. We will still need to pay attention and watch out for our own safety.

You can read the full text of SB 148 online.

Hardrock 100 Run

Jon Teisher at Hardrock 100
I'm not a runner. I've tried but just haven't been able to get in to it. I admire those that do 100 mile runs and sometimes wish I could do one. With cycling you can coast and recover a bit but not when running.

The Hardrock 100 Endurance Run was July 11th-13th last year. Our local paper did a good article and video on it. I've meant to post about them but didn't get it done until now.

The Hardrock 100 is a brutal running race in the Colorado's San Juan Mountains. It climbs 11 mountain passes and one 14,000-foot peak for a vertical gain of 32,962 feet. It's in the area where we camped and I did some long training for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race last year. The last day when we four-wheeled the Alpine Loop, we were on part of the Hardrock 100 course.

Two locals ran it last year. Jon Teisher and Neal Taylor are 2 very different runners. I've met both of them and they're both nice guys.

The Hardrock 100 Run is July 10th and 12th this year. A lottery is used to select 140 runners. Jon made it back in this year and Neal is 45th on the list.

Jon, more commonly known as JT or brownie, attends the Manitou Incline happy hour that I do. JT likes to eat double cheeseburgers and he likes beer. He even will drink beer during long races.

Just over a week ago, JT ran rim to rim and back of the Grand Canyon. He ran 42 miles with over 11,000 vertical feet in 13 hours. His write up is well worth the read.

Neal is the caretaker at Barr Camp and I've chatted with him a few times when I've hiked to Barr Camp. Neal is a strict vegetarian and rarely drinks. JT thinks Neal would drink more if it wasn't so hard to get alcohol to Barr Camp.

Mental toughness is a huge part of doing an ultra whether it's on the bike, running, adventure race or something else. One thing Neal has learned is it will get bad, you will suffer, but you're not going to die, so keep going. Leadville 100 organizer, Ken Clouber, says finishing hurts for a few hours but quitting hurts for 365 days until you can do the race again. Lance Armstrong said it even stronger by saying pain is temporary but quitting lasts forever.

Bike Ride with Phil from the Amazing Race

Phil Keoghan from the Amazing Race TV show is currently riding his bike across America. He left Los Angeles on March 28th and plans to arrive in New York City on May 9th. The last episode of the current Amazing Race airs the following day.

He will average around 100 miles a day on the bike and ride a total of 3500 miles. Currently he is a little over 1,000 miles into the ride. In addition to riding, he's doing interviews, raising money for MS and much more. You can help make a difference in the fight against MS by donating to Phil's MS Team.

Phil's ride schedule is on his website and you can ride along with him. Because of the distance, he's not riding at race pace but he's fit and smooth on the bike. Just be sure to print out the waiver and take it with you.

Phil Koeghan from the Amazing Race and His DadPhil is currently riding through Colorado. I drove up to Fairplay, CO yesterday morning to ride with him. I hung out with his wife, Dad and crew for a little while before we started riding. Everyone was very friendly.

The kids from the school came to see Phil Koeghan and were very excited. After Phil talked for a bit to the crowd, it was time for him to ride to Denver.

Phil Koeghan from the Amazing Race and His DadIt was 29 degrees when we rolled out and the wind made it feel much colder. Phil was very friendly although I didn't get to talk to him much while we were riding. We had such a strong, gusty cross-wind that it really wasn't safe to ride side by side.

I asked him why he chose to ride for MS. He said his cousin has it. He said he has been into cycling for a long time but has become more involved in it the last few years. Phil and his wife sponsor a U23 cycling team.

Scotty, one of the Amazing Race camera men, is filming Phil's ride. Josh is along to edit the video and there is a daily video blog. Because of them being on the move so much of the time, the video blog is currently a couple days behind. In addition to his website, you can follow his ride across America on twitter and on Facebook.

2009 Lake Pueblo Arkansas Point Challenge

Mountain Biking at Pueblo Reservoir
Photo from Southern Colorado Trail Builders

The mountain bike race at Pueblo Reservoir has long been a good early season race for Colorado Front Range racers to fine tune their fitness. This years edition is on Sunday, April 26th. You can register online using SportsBaseOnline. Online registration closes April 23rd. The race flyer also has an entry form and more info on the race.

It is once again being put on by the Southern Colorado Trail Builders. They currently don't have any info on their website and haven't replied to my email from a few weeks ago. Great Divide Bike & Ski confirmed this week it is on and gave me the info on online registration.

Pueblo Reservoir is a great place to go mountain bike this time of the year. It is generally warmer and dryer than most of the Colorado Front Range. I need to get down there and do some riding with my new Garmin Edge 705.

How to Train? - Bike Handling Skills: Leadville 100 MTB FAQ

Leadville 100 Powerline Descent
This post is part of the Leadville 100 MTB FAQ.

Although training for aerobic fitness is the biggest part of a successful Leadville 100, mountain bike handling skills can give you the extra edge to make your time goal. They can even be the difference between finishing or not. Skills can make the difference between making the official finish cut-off or not.

Being able to descend faster or maintain more of your speed through corners is like free energy. In a 100 mile mountain bike race, you can use all the free energy you can get. As with most things, practice is what will improve your handling skills.

Practice Speed

One way to improve your mountain bike skills is to pick a downhill section with plenty of turns that you can ride in 5-10 minutes. The section doesn't need to be steep downhill. It can even be rolling as long as you can keep a decent speed.

Ride the section a few times and time yourself. See how much you can improve your time. One thing to focus on is keeping your speed in the turns so you don't have to accelerate as much as you come out of the turn.

Once you feel comfortable on the section and aren't improving your time much, pick another section and repeat.

Ride Technical Sections

Another way to improve your mountain bike handling skills is to try riding technical sections on your normal rides even if you don't think you can. If you don't make it, try a few times before you continue on. Of course use common sense and don't do something that is almost certain to cause an injury.

Ride with Others

Riding with others will improve your handling skills especially if they're better than you. Being with someone else will get your competitiveness going and you'll try harder without even realizing it. Ride behind someone else and watch to see which lines and techniques they use.

Mountain Biking Gunnison Bluffs/Old Spanish Trail

Gunnison Bluffs Trail near Grand Junction, CO
Yesterday I spent the day in Grand Junction on the way to Moab. There's lots of mountain bike riding in the area including the Tabeguche Lunch Loops and trails in Fruita. The Colorado National Monument also is a nice road ride.

Over the 2 days before, I had spent about 7 hours crawling around on my hardwood floors re-coating them which had left my body not feeling so great. That was followed by a 5+ hour drive. I was pretty sure my legs weren't going to be very happy riding. I wanted to do a fairly easy ride to spin the legs out.

Gunnision Bluff Trail near Grand Junction, COThe trailhead for the Gunnision Bluffs/Old Spanish Trail is less than 1/2 mile from my aunt and uncle's house. In spite of my many visits, I had never ridden the trail. This seemed like the perfect time to finally go ride it.

View of Grand Mesa from Old Spanish Trail near Grand Junction, COFor the most part, Gunnison Bluffs and Old Spanish Trail are non-technical double track. There are a few steep hills but they aren't long. The trail follows along the top of the Bluffs along the Gunnision River. There are also good views of the Grand Mesa.

The Gunnision Bluffs/Old Spanish Trail is a good ride if you're in the Grand Junction area and want to do a nice spin. I ended up with 14.87 miles 1211 vertical feet and a ride time of 2:00:30

You can view the Gunnison Bluffs/Old Spanish Trail Google Map and elevation profile. I have photos marked on the map but most of them aren't linked yet.

Final Colorado Bicycle Safety Bill Vote Soon

The Colorado House of Representatives has the Colorado Bicycle Safety Bill on the agenda for today. There are enough bills ahead of it though that it's not expected to be voted on until next week. There's still time to contact your state representative.

I've written about the bill a couple times before but the key points of the bill are
  • Passing
  • Lane Position
  • More than 1 Rider
  • Anti-harassment

Earlier this week the Colorado bike safety bill passed the House Transportation committee 8-3. I listened to the streaming audio the other day but didn't get the timing right and only heard discussion about an EMT law and old tire disposal. The Colorado Safety bill (SB 148) had passed the Senate about a month ago.

For more information on the bill, see Bicycle Colorado's information page.

How to Train? - Periodization: Leadville 100 MTB FAQ

Dave Wiens Descending Powerline
This post is part of the Leadville 100 MTB FAQ.

Periodiation is the training philosophy of breaking training into blocks. The 3 basic periods are base, build and peak/race. Some coaches also use transition and preparation periods but I like to just think of them as the off-season. The focus of training in each block changes depending on how close it is to race season or if it is during race season.

Blocks are typically 4-6 weeks in duration. The time and/or intensity increase each week with the last week being a recovery week. I've always done 4 week blocks. When I'm doing a lot of intensity or volume, I can be ready for a recovery week by the 3rd week. 6 week blocks though might work during early base training.

A recovery week is needed to allow the body to rebuild and get stronger. Not doing recovery weeks can lead to injuries or illness. Recovery weeks are also called rest weeks but you still do a reduced amount of training.

I record my training weeks from Monday through Sunday. I had a coach that wanted it that way. At first I thought it was strange but then figured out it made a lot of sense. If you have a normal work schedule, you can do your longest rides on the weekends. If you switch your longest ride back and forth between Saturday and Sunday, your weekly totals will be inconsistent if you record Monday through Saturday.

I also keep track of training in time and not miles. I do a fair amount of my training on the road. A mile on the road is much easier than on the mountain bike. A ride with lots of climbing is much tougher than a flat ride. Time gives a more consistent training measure than miles. You can also account easily for cross-training.

Off-Season

During the off-season, it's important to stay fit but it's also a good time to do some cross-training. The off-season is also a good time to work on handling skills. Although I don't consider the Leadville 100 course very technical, lots of new racers are intimated by the long, fast downhills. The steep climbing sections also require excellent balance and weight distribution to keep from spinning out.

Other Training Phases

The other 3 training phases are covered in separate posts.
  • Base Training (coming soon)
  • Build Phase (coming soon)
  • Peak/Race (coming soon)

Colorado Bike Safety Bill Moving Forward

The Colorado Bike Safety bill (SB148) passed the Colorado Senate on Tuesday on a vote of 27 to 6. The important 3 foot passing distance rule was kept in the bill. I just can't imagine people thinking they need less than 3 feet to pass.

The foot rule is opposed by Larimer County Sheriff because he says it would be impossible for his agency to enforce. He says there's no way to measure how close a motorist passes. State Sen. Greg Brophy says law enforcement officials are already allowed to make judgment calls while enforcing the law.

The bill is now in the Colorado State House of Representatives. I haven't seen a date for a vote. If you're a Colorado cyclist, let your representative know that the bike safety bill is important to you. Click here to find contact info for your representative.

Key points of the bike safety bill are
  • Passing
  • Lane Position
  • More than 1 Rider
  • Anti-harassment

Go to Bicycle Colorado's bike safety bill page to get the latest info.

Cripple Creek Ice Festival

Last Saturday we went up to the Cripple Creek Ice Festival. There were some amazing sculptures. There was an ice maze and sledding for the kids. Out kids really enjoyed it. It is still going on this weekend and would make a fun trip for locals. Check the website for details.

I took several photos of the ice carvings. I also did a page that shows the carving of a moose sculpture and then using fire to give it a frosted glass look.

Urgent: Colorado Bike Safety Bill

Some years I ride my bike thousands of miles on the road. I've had motorists harass me in many ways. I've nearly been hit by cars passing too close, been intentionally buzzed, had a pickup pull into a gravel pullout and spin to spray me with gravel, had a couple bottles and ice thrown at me, had a bottle rocket shot into my back wheel and a passenger reach out and slap me. The list goes on.

The 2009 Colorado Bicycle Safety Bill will be voted on by the State Senate possibly as soon as this Friday, Feb. 13. This bill will help protect bicyclists on roads and makes it easier for motorists to pass bicyclists safely. Opponents are trying to remove the 3 feet safe passing distance. Bicycle Colorado has more information on Senate Bill 148.

You can help by contacting your state senator. You can find out contact info by clicking here and entering your zip code. Key points are
  • I encourage you to support Senate Bill 148
  • Please keep the 3 foot safe passing distance
  • I believe this bill will improve road safety

You can also help by getting the word out or donating to Bicycle Colorado's efforts.

2009 Leadville 100 Entrant List

2007 Leadville 100 Start Line
The preliminary 2009 Leadville 100 mountain bike entrant list was posted yesterday. It has 1297 racers on it. The list on the official site is a MS Excel file. If you don't have Excel, I converted it and have a web version of the entrant list.

I think last year they let in around a thousand and it wasn't that long ago that the limit was closer to 750. Even though they let a record number of people in, there are lots of people on the Yahoo Leadville email list and on forums saying they didn't get in.

Someone with a connection to someone at the race told me around 10,000 entries were received! That's a lot more than what I've heard in past years. I expected a jump with all the publicity from Lance doing it last year but that's more than I would have guessed.

2007 Leadville 100 MTB Article

After the 2007 Leadville 100 mountain bike race, Dean Cahow wrote a cool article for Colorado Serenity. Dean is a regular on the Yahoo Leadville 100 Group. I hadn't signed up for Leadville in 2007 so I roamed the course taking photos. My photos were used for the article. Dean gave me permission to post his article but I never got it posted back then.

Leadville: Two Wheels, One Hundred Miles

August 12th the morning after the 2007 Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike race, five-time champion Dave Wiens of Gunnison speaks to an assembly of hundreds of racers and their supporters, race volunteers, and staff. Accepting the champion's award for his hard-fought victory in the 100 mile race, Wiens shared openly emotional pride, passion, and respect for the race and his fellow racers. "We all share the same experiences out there. We feel the same things, endure the same things. We climb to Columbine Mine together; we all suffer the North Face and the Power Line and that heinous Boulevard. We share the same pain and rewards. This race is the cherry. This is the race that motivates me, that I look forward to every year, every day beginning in January. You know how it is." And the racers do know how it is, though few can touch the tremendous pace set by their champion.

The American West is rich with lore and legend of hard living, colorful characters, and wild extremes. Most locales of such note have faded into history or changed with the times, perhaps selling memories of years bygone. Leadville Colorado's history is among the hardest and most colorful of the Wild West, and so it will continue. Leadville lives true to its past, because it can live no other way. It stands rugged and defiant against the challenges of life at 10,200 feet above sea level.

Colorado's highest mountain peak, Mount Elbert (14,440 feet), and the aptly named Mount Massive (14,421 feet) crown the Sawatch Mountains draping Leadville's westerly visage. The spine of the Mosquito Mountains on the east demarks the continental divide and imposes a formidable horizon over which the sun rises to fill the high valley with light and warmth. Look north to the Gore Mountains and the headwater of the Arkansas River. The Arkansas tumbles by way of Leadville and south, gaining snow pack runoff from the flanking ranges.

Stunning geography and geology have shaped Leadville's human character and fate for one hundred and fifty years. Her rewards are rich but realized only by those of spirit appropriate to her challenges. The record is that of seekers: men and women who have risen to risk themselves against the extra measure not common in the world known to most. The town is the sum of the remarkable personalities that built it with the strength of their resolve.

Sporting competition is a natural extension of the character of Leadville. The small town is large in attracting adventurous endurance athletes to regionally and nationally renowned extreme challenges with the extra element that is uniquely Leadville. Snowshoe racing, pack burro racing, ultra-marathons, and mountain bike races each demand something more when commenced above 10,000 feet of elevation onto hardscrabble mountains. Crude roads and steep tracks once delivered men to and ore from remote mines. Today, they offer men and women exploration of spellbinding landscapes and of themselves. Since 1994, one of these explorations has been the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race, billed as The Race Across the Sky. It inspires entry applications from across the United States and foreign lands. From these, selection by organizers and a lottery determine the field of riders endorsed to mass at the starting line on the second Saturday of August.

Many find that having raced at Leadville is to have purchased with guts, rit, and determination an improbable bond with a heaving stripe chiseled into an inspiring panorama. The race is largely an out and back course, the second half retracing the first. Facets encountered outbound are met again in the opposite direction with inverted effect, adding an ironic intimacy to such an expansive undertaking. To the rest of the world, features such as the Saint Kevin (pronounced Kee-vin) mines, Green Gate trail, Sugarloaf Mountain, The Power Line, The Pipeline, The North Face, The Columbine Mine, and The Boulevard may be curious map designations. To those who've raced the Leadville 100, they are deeply personal experiences.

Dave Wiens' 2007 duel with former national mountain bike champion Floyd Landis prompted his post-race declaration,

"That was the hardest and best mountain bike race of my life. Mentally, physically, it was brutal." Californian Landis, now a road cycling champion and 2006 Tour de France winner, pushed Wiens hard from start to finish. Both men broke the previous course record, with the edge going to Wiens. Third place went to Colorado mountain biking legend and world-class adventure racer, Mike Moser of Vail. Boulder based Pro, Gretchen Reeves, recovered to nail the women's division win after struggling on a late-race climb.

Massed for an early morning start from the center of Leadville, hundreds of racers and an enormous entourage of spirit gather. Aimed west toward Mount Massive, bikes and their pilots wait to begin a great adventure. What adventure will they meet? Each has committed hours upon hours and miles upon miles over many months training for this opportunity. That opportunity presents when race announcer and Leadville Mayor Bud Elliot unloads a 12-gauge shotgun's report into the crisp morning air over the town. Good luck, good weather, good legs, and good lungs are hoped for by all. Mostly they hope to perform to the best of their preparation. Many would admit to hoping for even a little better than that.

Finishing the race once is a noteworthy accomplishment. Three much-admired ]ads have started and finished each of the fourteen editions. Many others are proud of their multiple finishes. Additional hundreds of "Lead Heads" are working on their own legacy. To record an official finish, the 100-mile course must be completed in less than twelve hours, recognized by award of a prized, Leadville 100 silver belt buckle and a race edition sweatshirt personalized with name and finishing time. Those crossing the finish line in under nine hours are similarly awarded, but distinguishing the outstanding achievement of their performance the buckle is a larger, gold and silver model. Top finishers in age and gender categories are additionally honored with trophies and other laurels. Every finisher earns the respect of their fellow starters, the family and friends who came to Leadville to support their effort, the citizens of Leadville who turn out in droves to witness the spectacle and cheer them on, the volunteers who give long hours of support to keep alive their pursuit of the finish line, and the inspirational organizers of the race whose unshakable belief and mantra is, "'You're better than you think you are, and you can do more than you think you can."

On route to finishing times ranging from seven to twelve hours, seven hundred racers that depart Leadville together at 6:30 am will string out considerably as the race unfurls across Lake County, Chaffee County, and San Isabel National Forest. Little more than three and a half hours into the contest, Wiens made the halfway point, 12,600 feet heavenward, and let loose his return to Leadville with an electrifying descent from the long abandoned Columbine Mine atop Quail Mountain. The climb to that turn is the longest and tallest of the day, rising 3,600 feet from Twin Lakes Reservoir into and above Lost Canyon. Lost Canyon's forested walls frame views across the famed Colorado Trail and the Arkansas River valley that on another day would demand pause. Above timberline, the canyon winnows onto raw tundra where the air is so thin an athlete's ability to absorb muscle-fueling oxygen is reduced by 20 to 25 percent. Upon this sparse rockscape, still far away on a horizon high above, the turnaround point is revealed. The sight can be a blow to the psyche. Potentially consoling, absolutely brilliant views to grand neighboring peaks are apt to go underappreciated. Meanwhile, six hundred climbing racers are stretched out along the entire length of the ascent. They defy their inner cry for oxygen and respite. Two strenuous climbs and more than forty miles of intense output are the fee demanded to embark on the Columbine Climb. The cost is areat. Failure of bike, body, or mind feeds attrition that will swell by day's end to consume almost two hundred riders.

After the arduous experience of the Columbine climb and descent, the surviving racers, lead by Wiens and Landis, are justifiably pleased to be heading toward Leadville, with more miles ridden than yet to ride. But harsh challenges are yet to come. Vigor extracted by each mile ridden cannot be replenished to meet those ahead. The outbound fide provides each rider with an overturned experience on the profile to be ridden inbound. The ups become downs and the downs., ups. The second half of the race is pocked with nasty pitches and heaves. leading to, at mile eighty, the base of the infamous Power Line climb. It is the most talked about, anticipated, and dreaded single challenge on the course. It's the twelve labors of Hercules rolled into one.

Outbound, the Power Line is the most treacherous four miles of the hundred. Clawed onto the southern exposure of Sugarloaf Mountain, it is easily discernable from miles away. It is another legacy of Leadville's mining history. Abandoned, 120year-old mine trails are the foundation of the route, since linked by construction crews clearing a swathe for the high-tension power lines that gave it a name.

The Power Line alternates between steep, crooked traverses and straight fall line plunges. The surface is either jagged and rocky or hard packed with loose sandy

topping. Its steep grades bear extensive, deep, and overlapping erosion scars. It is thrilling or frightening, depending on your personality and cycling skill set. It is the trap that springs more crashes than anywhere else on the course.

After eighty miles of hard racing, the elements that made the descent what it was conspire with gravity and the hot August sun to make the inbound climb hellish. The Columbine climb is touted as the race's sl-,nature feature, but racers will tell you the Power Line climb is the heart of the matter.

"The Power Line reveals a lot. You become basic: stripped of ego, pretense, and bravado. There is little left but the real you. On the Power Line, you find out who that is."-Leadville 100 veteran, Will Dean
Four miles on the Power Line crests three false summits before topping Sugarloaf Mountain. With twenty miles to go, the race is 80 percent in the bag. Racers must dig deep to find the strength and will to push their pace over the remaining distance. The biggest climbs are behind them, but there is still climbing to do. Most of the miles are behind them, but there are still twenty miles to go. The finish line is still at least an hour and a half of hard effort away.

Hours of common trial create a bond of camaraderie that those lacking the common experience cannot participate in. But those who have spent the day rooting, feeding, thrilling for, and anguishing for the racers are the brothers, sisters, friends, children, parents, husbands, wives, side line admirers, race volunteers, and staff that participate in all that is best of the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race. They are the other side of the race and a lasting gift to the racers. Throughout the afternoon, they return to town from positions out along the course to share the hundreds of moments that culminate hundreds of races and thousands of hours of individual effort. The racers are coming home to Leadville.

With less than half a mile to the finish, after all those other miles, over the top of a small rise at the bottom of 6th Street, the finish line is dead ahead. A large red banner is suspended over the street and the heads of a crowd that welcomes each rider in. Smooth pavement slopes toward the final block before rising slightly to the finish. Every racer who makes it here has succeeded in a very personal and fundamental way, from record-setting champion Dave Wiens (6:58:46) to Thomas Hurley of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, the final official finisher at 11:59:01. The hearts of the crowd greet them upon their triumph with cheers, claps, whistles, and stomps. None could be unmoved by the reception.

Returning home after the race, Floyd Landis posted compliments at his Web site (floydlandis.com) to Leadville race directors Merilee O'Neil and Ken Chlouber for building "one of the most impressive and challenging one-day races anywhere in the world." Like many other Leadville freshmen, Landis also declared his intent to make it an annual devotion.

2009 Leadville 100 MTB Confirmation Card

2009 Leadville 100 MTB Confirmation Card
2009 Leadville 100 MTB Confirmation Card Back

Friday the mailman brought me the good news that I got in the Leadville 100 lottery. This means I'll be going for my 6th Leadville 100 finish.

I fully intend to do more than 6 weeks of training like I did last year. Last year it couldn't be said I raced Leadville. I merely rode it very slow and steady and finished over 3 hours slower than my best time.

Joanne reports that somewhere around 10,000 entries were received. I expected a big jump in entries with all the publicity from Lance racing Leadville last year but didn't expect the number to be that big.

How to Train? - Cross Training: Leadville 100 MTB FAQ

Cross Training on the Manitou Incline
This post is part of the Leadville 100 MTB FAQ.

I've started Leadville 100 training tips with cross training not because it's most important but because I do more of it before I start focusing on the bike. During the off-season it's important to stay fit and keep a good base fitness. I also love hiking, backcountry skiing and snowshoeing. Running is also good for cross training but I don't enjoy it.

Staying fit in other ways helps keep me sharp mentally. As much as I love riding my bike, I get burned out when I do it 5 or more days a week all year.

Besides staying mentally sharp, cross training strengthens muscles that aren't used as much in mountain biking. This can help prevent injuries especially when you crash.

Many mountain bikers, especially older ones, find doing weight training helps with power and endurance on the bike. Those are already my strengths. Although I've tried weight training, I personally haven't found much benefit but that doesn't mean you won't.

There is one group of exercises that is generally part of weight training that I have found beneficial. These are exercises such as crunches for improving core strength. Often back pain on the bike is from weak abs or improper position on the bike.

Although I focus my training on the bike as race season approaches, I still like throwing in other outdoor training to keep more balanced. It's also good to continue doing core exercises.

Leadville 100 MTB FAQ: How to Train?

Dave Wiens at Leadville 100 Finish 2007
This post is part of the Leadville 100 MTB FAQ.

There's no single magic way to train for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race. Racers have a very wide range of experience and different goals. Each person also has different strengths and weaknesses.

I did my first mountain bike race in 1989. I've done 6 solo 24 hour mountain bike races and even longer races on the road. 2007 was the first year since then that I haven't done at least a couple races. Even if I don't train, I have good endurance but get really slow. I know other people that seem to still be fast when they're out of shape but they don't have much endurance.

Even though everybody is different, there are general training principals for everyone. Based on your strengths and weaknesses, the focus will be different. Even though I'm writing these training tips as part of the Leadville 100 MTB FAQ, they apply to any 100 mile or similar length mountain bike race.

I had started this post last year as one big post and it got out of hand. I shelved it and never posted it. Now I'm breaking it in to smaller pieces so it's more manageable. Below are the training topics I plan on covering but may make some changes as I go.

2009 Sand Creek Series Schedule Released

Eric Lawrence at Bear Creek Series

The schedule and venues for the 2009 Sand Creek Series have been announced. I'm not surprised that the Carmichael Training Systems Sand Creek International Classic will be held at Cheyenne Mountain State Park. It is a UCI race and part of the USA Cycling Pro MTB XCO Tour and the Western Final of the US Cup Series.

The rest of the series races will be at Bear Creek Park except the final will be at the Air Force Academy. It will also be the mountain bike race for the State
Games of America. There are plenty of great course options at the AFA so they should have a good course for the final.

DateVenue
Sunday, May 10 (Mother’s Day)Bear Creek Park
Wednesday, June 3Bear Creek Park
Saturday, June 13Cheyenne Mountain
State Park (UCI Race) (Pro XCT Race Report)
Wednesday, June 24Bear Creek Park

In addition to these confirmed series races, there could be one more Wednesday race. Also there will be another race at Cheyenne Mountain State Park on Saturday, September 19th. It will not be part of the series.

Update 4/17/09: Instead of the September race at Cheyenne Mountain State Park, there will be a non-series race at Palmer Park on October 17th. Also a National series Short Track XC has been added on Friday, June 12th.

Colorado Share the Road License Plates

Colorado Share the Road License Plate

I posted the end of 2007 about the new Colorado Share the Road License Plates. I've had the certificates from Bicycle Colorado for both our vehicles since last January.

I've been meaning to go to the DMV to the new plates but since I didn't have to I kept putting it off. I put if off until the last day before expiration grace period on one of the vehicles.

Even though I got the plates, I didn't take the 5 minutes to put them on. My wife got pulled over today for expired tags today but didn't get a ticket since the new plates were in the van. The plates are on it now.

Colorado Share the Road JerseyBicycle Colorado now has Share the Road jerseys too. If I didn't have a closet full of race jerseys from over the years, I'd be tempted to buy one.

2009 Leadville 100 Entry Forms Now Online

Bottom of Powerline at Leadville 100

Update 2/11/09: The preliminary 2009 Leadville 100 mountain bike entrant list has been posted.

The 2009 Leadville 100 entry forms are online for all of the races. The entry for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race must be mailed because of the entry lottery. The 100 mile run, Silver Rush 50 MTB, Silver Rush Run, marathon, heavy half marathon and 10k run can be registered for online with a $5 credit card processing fee.

The entry for the 100 mile mountain bike race is $250 for 2009. Entries must be received by January 31st to get in the lottery. I'm guessing it'll be tougher getting in this year because of all the publicity from Lance Armstrong doing it. Most likely I'll be sending my entry in to try for my 6th finish.

Last year I started a Leadville 100 MTB FAQ and will be adding more of the answers over the next few weeks. I also have photos from the 2007 and 2006 Leadville 100 MTB races. You can also look at photos from the Columbine Climb to get some idea of how much it climbs. I also put together a collection of YouTube videos of Dave Wiens and Lance from 2008.

Changing Aspen Leaves

Aspen Near Hardscrabble Pass, Colorado

A couple weeks ago my friend Rich called to see if I wanted to ride from Florence up Hardscrabble Pass and over to Bishop's Castle. Of course I wanted to. I knew I wasn't in shape to do it but that didn't matter.

I've ridden Hardscrabble Pass a few times. It's a tough climb. I rode it as part of long rides when I was training for the 508 and RAAM. Those times I rode from my house instead of driving the 45 miles to Florence.

Rich choose last Sunday for the ride in hopes that the aspen leaves would be changed. The aspen seem a little slow changing this year. This coming weekend will probably better for the aspen but they were still pretty last weekend.

Hardscrabble PassThe ride from Florence to Wetmore is a deceptive climb. Although it doesn't look like you're climbing much, it climbs 1,100 feet in about 10.5 miles. After Wetmore the climbing begins in earnest and lasts for about 7 miles and 1,800 vertical to McKenzie Junction. The top of the pass is a couple miles farther but only climbs gradually.

Rich is a small guy and always seems fit whether he's been riding much. He goes up hills with ease and is surprisingly fast for his size on the flats and downhills. His friend Lori also came along and she went up hill very well too.

Even if I had been feeling good, I would have been suffering up the climb but a cold a couple weeks before had turned into a nasty sinus infection. The doctor has me on strong antibiotics for 21 days. Between the infection and the antibiotics messing up my stomach, I've been really dragging. Last winter sinus rinses worked well to prevent sinus infections. This time I was already having trouble from all the pollen and dust from some remodeling. The cold on top of that was too much.

By the time I got to McKenzie Junction I was feeling pretty wiped out. If I had some flats to spin on, I might have recovered. Instead the climbing continues after turning left toward Bishop's Castle.

Rich and Lori said they were also getting tired. They were probably just tired of waiting for me. We turned around a few miles after the turn after we had ridden 23 miles and climbed 3500 feet. Then it was a fun downhill back to the car.

Dave Wiens and Lance Armstrong Leadville Videos

August 9th, 2008, Lance Armstrong competed in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race. Even most non-cyclists know who Lance is. Five time defending Leadville 100 champ, Dave Wiens, is less well known.

Even though Dave Wiens is less well known than Lance, he had a very successful mountain bike career. He won 2 World Cup races and numerous NORBA races. Dave was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2000.

During the early 90s, I saw Dave at many races in Colorado. Before mountain biking grew in popularity, often the Pros and Experts would start together and I'd be close to him on the start line.

Dave's wife, Susan DeMattei, was also a top pro mountain biker. In 1996 she won a bronze medal at the Olympics in Atlanta. In 1994 she won the silver medal at Worlds. She was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1997.

Here are several videos of what became a race between Dave Wiens and Lance. Course conditions were great from rain leading up to the race. With the good course conditions and by working together they shattered the course record Wiens set in 2007 when Floyd Landis raced.

Note: I've had trouble with YouTube video stopping after 2 seconds with FireFox. Upgrading to Flash 10 beta seems to have fixed it.

Dave Wiens Wins 6th Leadville 100, Lance Armstrong 2nd

Update: Watch videos of Dave Wiens and Lance Armstrong at the 2008 Leadville 100 | Complete unofficial 2008 Leadville 100 mountain bike results

2008 Leadville 100 MTB Start
Dave Wiens won the Leadville 100 mountain bike race yesterday. Lance Armstrong hung with him until about 10 miles to go.

Even though I'm 35 lbs over my race weight and only started training 6 weeks ago, I managed to finish in 11:21. That's over 3 hours longer than my best time.

It was a long, painful day for me. It certainly wasn't fitness that got me through the race. I just kept crawling along and probably was stopped less than 5 minutes the whole race.

Usually aid station splits are updated during the race and finish times posted and racers finish. They don't seem to be posted this year except for unofficial results for the top 24.

Only a Few Hours Until the Leadville 100

2008 Leadville 100 Race Number
The Leadville 100 starts in the morning. I'm about to find out if I can finish when I'm 35 lbs over my race and only trained for 6 weeks. I'm still giving myself a 50/50 chance of finishing.

Dave Wiens with My DaughterBoth Dave Wiens and Lance Armstrong talked a bit at the racer meeting today. Dave talked about how he's been coming to Leadville since he was young. One of his first races was the Mosquito Pass race here.

Lance downplayed how well he'll do. He said he'll be happy to be within an hour of Dave. Somehow I don't believe that. He did say he'll be showered and had meal by the time Chris Carmichael finishes. He rode the Columbine climb last week and said it was really tough.

One of the Trek guys had Lance's bike out near the start. It is one sweet bike. Of course it's more the engine than the bike.

Lance Armstrong Pre-Leadville 100 Videos

Here are a couple videos of Lance Armstrong when he was at Leadville last week pre-riding part of the Leadville 100 course. When I got some parts at Colorado Cyclist on Saturday, I talked to a guy whose roommate had gone up with the Carmichael Training Sytems group to ride with Lance. He said Lance was looking fit.

The 2nd video is of Lance and a couple other guys starting up the Columbine Climb. I recognize the spot at the end where the dog is barking and it isn't very far up. At that point you're close to the lowest point on the course around 9,000 feet and from there you climb to the high point at 12,600 feet.

Update: Lance Armstrong and Dave Wiens race videos

New Tires for Leadville 100 MTB

Since I haven't been racing, I've just been riding with worn out tires on my mountain bike. Actually they're more than worn out. They're really worn out. I've had a couple times when the front tire started sliding out when I wasn't cornering very hard.

With the Leadville 100 this weekend, it was time for some new rubber. I put a brand new Hutchinson Python tire on the rear. I had a new Gold Elite one lying around but I don't think they're available anymore. I also replaced the very worn front IRC Mythos tire with a new one.

This is the tire combination I've used on my previous 4 Leadville 100 finishes including the year I finished 17th in 8:18. I've been very happy with the setup. I figure it's best not to change it now.

The Python has low rolling resistance and works well on the hard packed jeep roads. Some guys also run the Python on the front. I like the little more traction that the Mythos gives me and it seems to also roll well.

I've always liked to wear down the Mythos a little since the knobs were a little taller than needed for Leadville. When I put the slightly worn one on Sunday, I discovered it had dry rot. The new one has slightly different tread pattern and the knobs aren't quite as tall. I think it'll be at least as good as the old one.

No Leadville 100 MTB Course Change

The North Face on Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Course

The North Face on Leadville 100 Mountain Bike CourseThere's been talk on the Yahoo Leadville 100 MTB group about a possible course change for the race this year. The BLM has closed what race veterans know as the North Face to vehicles and there was talk that we might not be racing on it this year. I certainly wouldn't be sad to see it go.

Racers that aren't good bike handlers haven't liked it outbound. That hasn't bothered me. I've just hated walking up it on the way back. Normally the sun is beating down and there's no shade.

The North Face on Leadville 100 Mountain Bike CourseWhen I rode it last week, it didn't say anything about no bikes. Although boulders have been used to block it, there's plenty of room to ride between them. Unfortunately a few jeeps have driven through the sage brush to go around them.

Fourteen time finisher, Ricky, talked to race organizer, Ken Clouber, on Friday about the North Face. He said we will be racing on it this year but it will be the last time.

The North Face on Leadville 100 Mountain Bike CourseThe BLM has also cut in some water bars on the steepest section. This combined with vehicles not keeping it packed has left it very loose. I was able to ride it but it wasn't easy. I would suggest anybody not comfortable with it to get off and walk down. Just stay off to the side if you walk so you aren't in the way of those riding it.

Mark Wallace was also riding the course last weekend. He shared GPS of the current North Face and a possible alternate route. Ken also mentioned something about working with IMBA to put in a singletrack. I don't know if that will happen since it would only be used for the race.

Will Lance Armstrong Show at the Leadville 100?

2007 Leadville 100 MTB Start

Update: Lance finished 2nd in the 2008 Leadville 100. See videos of Lance and Dave Wiens at the Leadville 100.

In January Lance Armstrong did the Miles of Discomfort mountain bike race. He dropped out from cramps 43 miles into the 52 mile race. The word was that he was training for the the Leadville 100.

In March Biking Bis reported that Chris Carmichael, Lance's long time coach, said Lance was planning to do the Leadville 100. Since then I haven't been able to find anything about Lance doing the Leadville 100 until today.

Today Ken Chlouber announced that Lance has entered the Leadville 100. Early last year, it appeared there would be a battle between Lance and Floyd Landis. Soon after Landis announced he'd be racing, Lance said he had a scheduling conflict. In July Lance rode part of the course and it seemed he would be racing. In the end Lance didn't show but Landis did race and finished 2nd to Dave Wiens.

Ricky at the Leadville 100Ricky, one of the very few that have finished every Leadville 100 MTB race, has posted on the Leadville 100 Yahoo group that Ken had also told him about Lance racing. Lance told Ken he wasn't in that good of shape but thought he could still finish in the top 10. Of course he'll have to actually show up.

I doubt we'll see a race between Lance and Landis this year. Although Landis was going to be racing the National Ultra-Endurance Series this year, he hasn't done any of them since CAS ruled against him in his 2006 Tour de France doping case.

116 Miles Instead of Silver Rush 50

Over the last couple weeks, I debated whether I should go do the Silver Rush 50. It would have been just for training because I'm still in no shape to be competitive. The best way to push hard is to do a race. I can go harder in a group than by myself and I can go even harder in a race.

I ended up deciding not to do it. One of the reasons was that I wasn't sure I'd feel like riding on Sunday and wanted to get 2 days of training in. Other reasons were the cost and time driving.

Instead I decided to ride up to Denver on Saturday to see my brother-in-law that is in the hospital with lung cancer (More about him here). It was a hot day but the ride was pleasant on 105 to Sedalia. From there I took 85/Santa Fe to less than a mile from the hospital. Once I got past C-470 to where there was lots of asphalt and concrete, the heat became almost unbearable. The sun was beating down and the temperature on my computer was reading 102 degrees.

My wife and kids had driven to the hospital. We stayed for a couple hours before heading home. Since it was about 10 miles farther to the hospital than I had guessed, I was going to run out of daylight on the way home. I had my wife take me back 18 miles to Sedalia. That way I also avoided the least pleasant part of the ride.

Some clouds had built up by the time I started riding again and I got a couple drops of rain. The good part was that it was cooler. The bad part was that I had a strong headwind.

Just a couple miles south of Sedalia I was surprised to see a herd of over 30 elk. They were running through a field as thought they had been spooked by something. The herd was made up of females and young.

The Saturday before, I had gone up to the hospital with my wife and then just rode home from Sedalia. Even after already riding nearly 70 miles, I felt better this time. I was also slightly faster even with a stronger headwind.

The ride was 116 miles with 4403 feet of climbing in 8:02. Average speed was 14.5 mph. I'm guessing the extra headwind on the way back balanced out descending slightly more than climbing.

Camping Trip Near Lake City, CO Day 4 Photo Dump

The 4th and last day of our camping trip near Lake City, CO didn't involve any mountain biking or hiking. My brother rented a jeep and wanted to 4-wheel the Alpine Loop which goes over Cinnamon Pass, through Animas Fork and back over Engineer Pass. We also drove into Silverton. The first day when I rode Cinnamon Pass, I would have done the Alpine Loop if I had been fit enough.

Camping Trip Near Lake City, CO Day 3 Photo Dump

I didn't spend as much time on my bike on our 3rd day camping near Lake City. I only got about an hour spin. We also did about a 4 mile hike to Thompson Lake. I had my 3 year old in the backpack so I got a good workout.

My brother that is 6 years older than me was the one that got me into backpacking and mountaineering when I was a teenager. He now lives in Ohio. He and his family arrived in Lake City late the night before. His family and my parents came out to where my sister's and my families were camped for dinner and a marshmallow roast.

Camping Trip Near Lake City, CO Day 2 Photo Dump

Day 2 of our camping trip started with another lazy morning. We also moved our camp to the prime campsite on the lake when our neighbors left.

We did some driving around with my sister and her family. We went over Slumgullion Pass toward Creede. One of the dirt roads we took went back to Rio Grande Reservoir.

I was looking for a way to ride my bike back. According to the map, I could take the Lost Trail Creek Trail up over the Continental Divide and get back to our camp. It looked like it was only about 25 miles. The map wasn't detailed enough to know what I was getting into but I'm always up for an adventure.

Even though the map only had 300 foot contours I could tell there were going to be some really steep sections. Maybe it was only 25 miles but it sure seemed much farther. The last little ways to the top was steep enough that just walking was hard. I got dropped off at 4:30 and rode into camp just after 9. A few minutes longer and I wouldn't have been able to see where I was going in the dark.

How Mountain Biking is Like Going to the Eye Doctor

I've worn glasses or contacts since I was in 4th grade. Without them I can't even make out objects half-way across the room. I've had my eyes test many times by the eye doctor. Sometimes mountain biking is like going to the eye doctor.

When you go to the eye doctor, they ask you if you can see better with #1 or #2 as they flip lenses back and forth. There are times when mountain biking also offers choices. Below are 2 choices I had on one of my rides in the San Juan mountains which was on the Lost Trail Creek Trail. Which of the 2 ways looks like a better way to cross the creek, #1 or #2?

#1 has plenty of logs bobbing in the snow run-off. #2 has logs well above the water with a rope to hang on to but one of the logs has already cracked.

Lost Trail Creek Trail

Below are 2 choices that I'll have in another month at the Leadville 100 mountain bike race. Go through the bushes and over a slippery plank or blast through the water.

Bottom of Powerline in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race

Other times you have the choice of going for it or turning back. Some of my friends say I have poor judgment and don't know when to turn back. Below is another picture from the Lost Trail Creek Trail. I tried finding a better place to cross but couldn't find one. The water was mid-thigh and swift but I made it Ok.

Camping Trip Near Lake City, CO Day 1 Photo Dump

Here is a photo dump from Friday June 27th. We drove down to Lake City the night before and got there a little after midnight. By the time we got the tent set up at the Wupperman Campground, it was a little after 1 AM so I didn't get headed out for my ride until late morning.

I rode from our camp site to the top of Cinnamon Pass at 12,640. Fortunately it was one of the rare Colorado summer days without thunderstorms. With my lack of fitness, suffered plenty and had to walk some on the steeper sections.

There's Still Snow in the Mountains

Snow on Cinnamon Pass

With record snowfall in many parts of the Colorado mountains last winter, there's still plenty of white stuff. In the San Juan mountains where I was camping and training for 4 days, they plow the main jeep roads in time for July 4th. The local towns depend on the tourism money from people four wheeling.

Normally they only have spots with 2-3 feet of snow to plow. This year they're plowing out over 10 feet in places and the counties are running out of money. On one of my rides, I crossed the continental divide on a short part of the Colorado Trail. Even though it was over 12,000 feet there were only a few short sections where I had to walk through snow.

In a different part of the state, there were concerns that the Firecracker 50 course in Breckenridge would still have too much snow on it for the July 4th. The 2 times I've raced it there were no signs of snow. Just last week there were several feet of snow in Little French Gulch. I heard they hired a snow plow for some of the road and may also have done some hand shoveling. That work combined with hot weather for the last week has put the course in good shape for the race on Friday.

I won't be racing the Firecracker this year. My fitness is still so poor that I think racing will do more harm than good. I'm still debating whether it would be helpful to do the Silver Rush 50 on July 19th. I really do want to do one race before the Leadville 100.

2008 Kokopelli Trail Race

Kokopelli Trail
The Kokopelli Trail Race happened a week and a half ago. The 142 mile race through the desert between Moab, UT and Fruita, CO is one of growing number of unsupported endurance mountain bike races. Even getting water from campers on the trail is enough for disqualification.

In the case of the KTR, there is no entry fee and no real organizer. It's just several people that decide to meet and race. The last few years it had gotten quite big. Unfortunately the BLM thought that a permit was required. Last year they showed up and fined Adam Lisonbee $275 since he was the one that proposed the date on MTBR.

This year the plans for the race were kept quiet to keep the BLM from interfering. It also meant that a lot smaller group race it. It also went from Moab to Fruita instead of the opposite direction like last year. The race started and midnight Friday night

Kenny won this year's race. He ran out of water and was suffering but still managed to win. His time was 14 hours and 56 minutes. Chris, who hiked Pikes Peak by moonlight with me in February, finished 2nd even after not being able to stay awake and taking naps along the way. I believe Pete Basinger from Alaska was third and another Alaskan Geoff Roes was 4th.

Dragging This Week

Cross Country Skiing in Rocky Mountain National Park

I've been meaning to write up about some of the cross country skiing I did over the New Years weekend. I've been really wiped out all week. I got a sore throat last week but really didn't feel very sick otherwise except Sunday. My throat was so sore though that I had trouble sleeping a couple nights and got dehydrated one day because it hurt too much to swallow. It turns out that I had strep throat. The sore throat is pretty much gone but I need to catch up on sleep. Hopefully in the next couple days I'll get some energy back.

Cabin Near Grand Lake
We made a 4 day weekend for New Years and went to the mountains near Grand Lake. I didn't take the laptop and our cell phones didn't have signal. The highways home were closed for 20 hours but we didn't hear about it until they had been reopened. Sometimes it's nice to be disconnected.

Colorado Share the Road License Plates

Yesterday I went and hung out at the Department of Motor Vehicles. I have been driving around all month with expired tags. I was nervous enough driving around town with expired tags but I'm going to be driving out of town in a couple days and don't want to get pulled over. While I was there, I asked some questions about the Share the Road plates.

If you pre-ordered plates before December 15th, you should get your approval certificate this week. If you ordered after that or are planning to order, it will take 2-3 weeks to get the certificate. You have to order the approval certificate online and have it before going to DMV to get the plates.

If your registration doesn't renew in January or whichever month you go in to get them, you will be credited for the time remaining until your renewal. Your registration renewal will change to the month that you get the Share the Road plates.

Although the plates are supposed to be made, they don't have them at the Chapel Hills location for El Paso county. The lady says they normally don't get the new plates by the time they're supposed to be available. She recommended calling before going in to get them.

Originally I had seen that they needed 3,000 pre-ordered or they wouldn't be made. Now the Bicycle Colorado FAQ says that 3,000 need to be in circulation by July 1, 2009. Let's make sure there are plenty of Share the Road plates to let other motorists know we care about cycling.

Ski the 14ers Book

A few weeks ago I posted about Chris Davenport skiing all 54 fourteeners in Colorado in 363 days. He has a book with over 200 pictures that supposed to start shipping tomorrow according to the Ski the 14ers website. Amazon has Ski the 14ers available for pre-ordering. I think it would make a great Christmas gift. If you don't know who to give it to, you can send it to me.

Skiing the Fourteeners

In January Chris Davenport finished skiing all 54 fourteeners in Colorado in 363 days. I have hiked all of them and done winter climbs or skiing on a few of them. I certainly couldn't ski most of them and have trouble even imagining anyone being able to. A couple that seem really tough to me are Little Bear and Pyramid.

The Forest Service has said that no video can be used that was shot in wilderness areas from a helicopter. I've read several places that no video from wilderness areas can be used without any mention of a helicopter. I don't understand use of video taking by someone skiing but I agree helicopters shouldn't be hovering over wilderness areas.

Out there posted a link today of a video clip that's been on YouTube for a couple months. It shows some really good shots of how pretty it is in the backcountry in the winter. It also shows some shots of crazy skiing. There are also a lot of great pictures on his website for the project.

Ride Through Colorado National Monument

I intended to write about my ride through the Colorado National Monument last week but didn't get it done. Things were hectic with Halloween, a dinner for work and replacing my personal computer. My computer was 9 years old and I was having too much trouble running new software on it. Oh and I spent the beautiful weekend working on my garage. There's been something else big but I can't post about it just yet.

On a related my stuff is too old note, a new cell phone showed up a couple weeks ago in the mail because my current one isn't going to be supported. It's the only cell phone I've had because I just don't use it very much. The good news is the new one is smaller and won't take up so much room in my jersey pocket.

We decided to go over to Grand Junction to see my aunt and uncle almost 2 weeks ago. Mountain biking in Fruita as appealing but I hadn't done my monthly century yet and it was the last weekend of the month. I decided I'd ride through Colorado National Monument. I'd ridden part of it and driven through it but I'd never ridden the whole way.

We drove to Grand Junction after work on Friday and got there late. I was already pretty exhausted from a stressful week at work.

Colorado National Monument from Grand JunctionSaturday morning I got a late start but that allowed it to warm up enough to wear short sleeves and knee warmers. One thing to note about the road through Colorado National Monument is that it runs along the top of the cliffs. Whether you start from Grand Junction or Fruita, it means you have a good climb ahead of you.

Tunnel in Colorado National MonumentI started from Grand Junction and had a bit of an easy spin before I hit the climb. Along the Colorado River, the cottonwood trees were still really pretty. I knew I had a long climb ahead of me so I just settled into a nice, steady pace. The views are really cool as you climb up to the cliffs and then go through a tunnel.

Glade ParkSince my uncle was working at the post office trailer up in Glade Park, I rode up there which added about another 1,000 feet of climbing. The turn off is about the top of the main climb on the main Monument road. There's really not much to see up there other than the hills around.

Grand Junction from Glade Park RoadAfter getting a tour of the post office trailer, I had a fun descent back to the main road. There's one sharp left corner where you're just looking at the valley far below. I took a picture but it doesn't show it the best. At least at 40+ mph, it looked like if you didn't make the curve you'd launch into free fall.

Colorado National MonumentBack on the main road, the road follows the tops of the canyons. Although there's no big climbs, there's still a lot of up and down. Riding on a bike, I realized the road is closer to the edge than I had thought when I drove it. There's one spot near the Fruita end where the wall for the road starts on the top of the cliff before it gets totally vertical. I normally like heights but I felt safer riding in the middle of the lane through that section.

Once I got to the Fruita end, I had a great descent down. That end has 2 tunnels. In a couple minutes I was done what had taken me an hour to climb on the other end.

From Fruita back to Grand Junction is ever so slightly uphill but seems flat. Since the loop from my aunt and uncle's house was only about 65 miles, I was going to ride at least an extra 25 files on Highway 50 towards Montrose. That would have given me the minimum 90 miles to count as a century for the UMCA Year Rounder.

I got thinking about it. I was really tired. Partly from the ride and partly from the week. About the last hour of riding would be after dark, although I had my lights with me so it didn't really matter. I still decided riding almost a century wasn't that important and there was no reason to turn a great ride into something I didn't enjoy. Of course once I turned around and was about a mile from the end of my ride some rednecks had to throw a pop bottle at me.

Colorado National Monument Bike Ride ProfileI ended up doing 71.3 miles with 3937 feet of climbing in 5:11 of ride time. It wasn't as much as I had planned but Highway 50 is pretty boring and hanging out at the house as more enjoyable.

Skiing Has Begun in Colorado

Skiing at A-Basin
A-Basin opened on Wednesday making it the first ski area in the country to open. Dave from the out there blog was there and has posted some pictures. Even when I skied at ski areas, I never expected good snow until at least late December. I get enough of an adrenaline rush mountain biking to not need to go ski on icy, man made snow.

Puma Lift at Ski CooperWith the temperatures here mainly in the 70's and 80's the last couple weeks, I haven't even really been thinking about skiing. Today has been colder and there's a chance of rain or snow tonight. My 4 year-old has already been asking to go skiing. We took her for her birthday last spring. I cross country skied while she was in her class. After her class they let me take her up the Puma lift on the bunny slope. That was a bit of a challenge especially since I had my cross country skis.

Skiing Near the Eiseman HutLast year I went skiing at a ski area for the first time in over 10 years. The conditions weren't good and I got injured. I think I should just stick to skiing in the backcountry. I really don't enjoy skiing at ski areas any more but I do like to in the backcountry. It's really as much about being in the backcountry as it is about skiing.

Update 10/15/07: Rippin Skiers was at A-Basin on Saturday and got a good picture of the white strip of snow down a mostly bare mountain. Loveland got over a foot of snow over the weekend and is opening tomorrow.

Help Stop Continental Divide Trail Bike Ban

Colorado mountain bikers may find several of the state’s best trails off-limits if the Forest Service pushes through with a new directive. The agency wants to limit or prohibit bike access on the Continental Divide Trail (CDT), which includes the Monarch Crest, Rabbit Ears Pass, Peaks Trail and many sections of the Colorado Trail. In all, hundreds of miles of Colorado singletrack could be lost if mountain bikers don’t make their voices heard. There is more information on the IMBA website.

IMBA has a simple online form that makes it easy for you to send your opinion to the Forest Service. The deadline for comments is October 12th.

10 Car Garage!

Luxury House Near Elbert, CO

Every time I ride to Elbert, I notice a big house on top of one of the bluffs. It was built just a few years ago. It's noticeable for both it's size and design. It must have a great view of the mountains. It also must get some brutal winds especially in the winter.

When I did my century ride on Sunday, I saw that it was for sale. There was a box of flyers and I stopped because I was curious. Just the garage is almost as big as my house including the basement! It's described as a 10+ car garage. The garage is 2132 square feet and the house is 6225 square feet. It will only set you back $4.9 million. The realtor has more pictures online.

Share The Road License Plates

Bicycle Colorado is launching a Share the Road license plate campaign to reinforce that bicycles are welcome on roads. Proceeds from each plate will fund bicycle safety education programs across Colorado. Programs include:
  • Educate motorists on how to safely share the road
  • Educate bicyclists on the rules of the road and safe riding
  • Educate event directors and bicyclists on best practices for event safety
  • Provide guidance to bicyclists involved in crashes
  • Outreach to law enforcement on the rights and responsibilities of motorists and bicyclists

Ten other states already have Share the Road plates, but Colorado does not – yet. When I was at Texas Hellweek last spring, I saw the Texas plate with Lance on it. With 1.5 million active bicyclists in Colorado (plus more than 699,000 bicycling tourists boosting our economy) the time for Colorado to share the road is now.

The State requires at least 3,000 Colorado citizens sign the petition to move the Share the Road legislation forward. The more who sign the petition, the better the chances. But the 2007 legislative session begins in January and the window to collect signatures will soon close. If you live in Colorado and are at least 18, you should sign the petition.

Our Share the Road license plate will remind motorists to watch for bicyclists, pass with care, and respect our place on public roads. Plus the bicycle safety education programs it funds will make bicycling safer for you. If the law gets passed, I'm certainly interested in getting them for my vehicles.

Long Ride to Top of Hardscrabble Pass and Back

I rode a little this morning and then met up with a fairly large group of Pikes Peak Velo teammates. It was 26 degrees when I rolled out which isn't that bad but the forecast was for it to hit the mid-60s so I underdressed a bit so I wouldn't have too much stuff too carry. My legs were still complaining about my interval workout on Thursday. My friend Larry that is training for the Leadville Trail 100 Leadman competition also was along and continued on with me when everyone else turned around in Penrose around mile 30 for them. He finished all but the Silver Rush last year and that was because he had to go to Germany.

Larry and I were actually planning of going all the way to Westcliffe but got worried we might not be back by dark. I think we would have been but better to be safe. I always forget how long the Hardscrabble Pass climb is. In the middle there is a 2 mile section at 8% grade. I felt great until it got steep but then started looking for a missing gear. The rewarding thing about climbing Hardscrabble is you get an awesome view of the Sangre de Cristo mountains when you get near the top. I had debated about taking the camera but didn't. I wished I had because the mountains had fresh snow from yesterday's storm system. They were so pretty! They include the fourteeners Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle, Kit Carson, and Humboldt.

I got in 172 miles with 10,220 feet of climbing with an on bike average speed of 16.7 mph. Tomorrow's ride will be a little shorter but still long with lots of climbing. I took Monday off work and plan to do a long, flat ride to work on staying in the aerobars more.
