It's (Warren) Miller Time - Warren Miller's Dynasty Review

(Johnny Lyons on Vail Pass)

If there’s a moment that stands out in “Warren Miller’s Dynasty,” it’s this: Mono Skier X. Yeah. That’s right – insane Skier X featuring disabled athletes on mono skis at the Winter X Games. This sport is crazy anyway, but these adaptive competitors take it to the next level. Their slogan says it all: “If there’s nothing you can do about it… you either get busy living, or you get busy dying.”

This year’s ski film hits the Pikes Peak Center Friday and Saturday, and it features all the powder-filled shots of years past. The film’s director and producer Max Bervy says the film’s showing “is like a family reunion, held in neck-deep pow, with mandatory air required for entry. It leaves no snowball unturned.”

That said, “Dynasty” won’t disappoint those who make a yearly pilgrimage to see the newest Warren Miller film.

It has the usual amount of jaw-dropping stunts and scenery, and sweeps from Lake Tahoe to British Columbia, Washington to Colorado and Alaska to Michigan. Chris Davenport travels to northern Norway to ski above the Arctic Circle. Chris Anthony and Austin Ross look for the birthplace of skiing in the wilds of northwestern China, and find a culture where homemade wooden skis are standard equipment. And favorites from the past – Lucas and Adam Schrab (remember the farm boys jumping over mountains of hay?) return with an aging school bus and wooden ramps.

In the recent past, Miller films have celebrated the rise of the snowboarder. This one is different, with snowboards showing up in only three segments. This film appears to be dedicated to new schoolers and backcountry stars.

Colorado Springs CyclocCross Race This Saturday

The second Pikes Peak Velo cyclocross race is this Saturday at Bear Creek park. I will be there at o-dark-thirty helping set up the course. Throughout the day I'll be shooting photos and helping out with whatever needs to be done.

The plan is for the course to be the same as the September cyclocross race. Check the race flyer for the times for the different races.

Because of the fairly short laps, cyclocross is great for spectators. It looks like the weather will be nice so come on out with your cowbell if you aren't racing.

Barr Trail Makes "Dangerous" List

In its most recent issue, Backpacker magazine lists “The Ten Most Dangerous Hikes in America.” Some of the entries aren’t surprising: the brutally hot Bright Angel in the Grand Canyon, the well-named Maze in Utah.

The list also includes Barr Trail. For those who are constantly frustrated by the bad rap Barr often gets – “it’s a sidewalk;” “it’s among the easiest 14er hikes” – the idea that Barr is really a badass might be good news.

But lightning is the dangerous reason Barr made the list, and it’s always been a component in any hike on Pikes Peak.

My scariest hike on Barr occurred a few years ago during an early September thunder/snowstorm. I was leading a group of friends, all first-timers to the trail, from the summit back down to Barr Camp where we had booked the guest cabin for the night.

Storms weren’t forecast, and skies were uniformly gray when we left the summit, but about two miles down, it started snowing and thundering. When one of my friends asked innocently, “why are the (metal) trail signs humming?” I knew we were in trouble. We spread out and kept moving downhill and made it to the cabin unscathed. (That hike is forever known by my clever friends as “the day Deb tried to kill us.”)

Turns out we did a couple of things right – we started in the morning, when there is (usually) a lower risk of storms, and we spread out when the storm started. But when you’re above tree line on Pikes Peak in a lightning storm, it’s nearly impossible to make yourself follow the other conventional lightning safety tips: take off your pack and move away from it; crouch down and balance on the balls of your feet.

Instead, the impulse is to flee, which takes a while on Barr (unless you’re Matt Carpenter).

Spooky Bike Criterium

Local mountain Pro Matt Simmons with his wife.

I had planned to go over to the Halloween Costume bike criterium put on by the Women's Mountain Bike Association of Colorado Springs last Saturday. I didn't manage to make it over to it though.

It looks like I missed a fun event. For more funny and/or scary photos, check out more Halloween costume photos from WMBA. Also head over to Matt Simmon's Halloween crit write up. He's a local Pro on the the Pro Cycling mountain bike team.

Is a Roundabout Needed on a Bike Path?

Bike Path Roundabout

I don't understand the popularity of roundabouts. It seems they've been showing up all over the place the last few years.

I understand the concept and how they should help keep traffic flowing through an intersection. The problem is too many people don't understand how to use them. All it takes is one person to cause major problems.

I guess the Colorado Springs Park and Rec department decided that bicyclists need to be included in the trend. This year they put in a roundabout on the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail near downtown. It's at the intersection of the Greenway Trail and the Midland Trail across from the America the Beautiful Park.

From the Greenway Trail, it was hard to see if anyone was coming from the west on the Midland Trail. The way they cut into the bank to put in the roundabout would have fixed that problem.

The city has been threatening to cut bus service and other essentials services if voters didn't vote for tripling city property taxes. Not surprisingly voters defeated the tax increase by nearly 2-1 yesterday. We may just need the roundabout on the bike path.

Named Best Local Outdoor Blog by Colorado Springs Independent

Colorado Springs Independent Best Local Outdoor Blog

As I do most weeks, I picked up the latest Colorado Springs Independent which is their Best Of volume two. It's been laying on my desk at work waiting for me to have a chance to take a short break to scan for something interesting. Work has been so busy that I hadn't taken the time to look past the cover.

Imagine my surprise yesterday when Deb Acord emailed me today that this blog had been named Best Local Outdoor Blog. Of course Deb has been writing great posts for the last couple months and she shares in this recognition and deserves a big thanks.

I also owe a big thanks to you the readers, whether long time readers or just new. If I didn't know people were reading and commenting, I probably would have quit blogging a long time ago. It's changed a lot from it's birth as a way to record my training for RAAM to now being a much broader cycling and outdoor blog.

If you're local, you can pick up a copy of the Indy around town and check it out in print on page 59 or you can check out the online version.

Sand Creek Fall Classic 2009

Yesterday was the Sand Creek Fall Classic which as far as I know was the last mountain bike race of the season in Colorado. Even though it was cold and icy last weekend, this weekend was absolutely perfect fall weather. There was bright blue sky with temperatures around 70 degrees.

I went out and shoot some photos of the end of the 11:15 start and the Pros and Category 1 (Experts) that started at 1:00 PM. The course was about a 3 mile loop and included some great singletrack. It made me wish I was racing.

The field sizes were small but that wasn't surprising with the race so late in the year. Below are a few of the photos I took. You can see more of my Sand Creek Fall Classic photos in the photo section. I plan to add another album with many more photos.

About The Shot was also out shooting photos and should have them online in a couple days. They also have a few 2010 Sand Creek Series calendars available.

Peak Region Cyclist October Cover

The October issue of Peak Region Cyclist is out. It can be found in bike shops, Chipotles and other stores in southern Colorado as well as the online version.

Check out my article that gives an overview of cyclocross and a talks about a couple fast local women cross racers. I didn't talk about Kelli Emmett but she was fast at Cross Vegas with a 4th place finish. The photos with the Peak Region Cyclist article are from my Pikes Velo SuperCross race photos.

One More Pikes Peak Region Mountain Bike Race

Even though the 2009 cyclocross season is in full swing, mountain bike racing isn't quite over in the Pikes Peak region. But first I let something sneak up without posting about it.

About the Shot Photography has Sand Creek Series 2010 calendar. Order deadline is October 8th which is today, Thursday. The calendar is $17.50. The calendar can be picked up at the October 17th race.

The Sand Creek Fall Classic mountain bike race is October 17th in Palmer Park. The Carmichael Training Systems Sand Creek Series is finished so it's not part of the series. You can view the race flyer here. The pre-entry deadline is Thursday, October 15th.

The course hasn't been finalized yet but will be in the northeast part of the park and around Lazy Land. It is expected to be about 2.5 miles. If it's where I think it is there should be a little technical coming off the ridge not far from the dog park. There'll also be some open power sections too.

Once the course is finalized, I'll try getting the info posted here. The course map is now on the Sand Creek Sports site. It looks like it'll be a good classic of some easier trails and least a bit of technical.

Other Sand Creek News

The UCI Pro XCT race will be back in 2010 and will carry more UCI points. Correction: The Pro XCT race will be once again be a category 3 UCI race. Andy was asked to put on a category 2 but didn't think he had the budget.

The Sand Creek Pro XCT 2010 dates are July 10 & 11 and will be the Pro XCT Series Final race as well as the final National XC Championship Qualification Race. The XC National Championships are the following weekend in Granby, CO at the Sol Vista ski area.

I haven't heard any details on the Sand Creek Series for 2010 but from what I've heard, I expect it'll be back with at least as many races as this year.

PPV Cyclocross Race Photos and Report Sept 12, 2009

I now have photos from the Pikes Peak Velo cyclocross race on September 12th, 2009 posted for all categories. I had photos posted for all but the last 2 races before I went to Interbike. Unfortunately I got sick soon after I got back and didn't get much done last week.

Race results can be found on the ACA website by clicking here. We had good turnout although racer numbers were down slightly from last years first race. I'm not sure why but maybe it's because the cross schedule is getting fuller.

There was lots of good racing action all day. It was cool and overcast most of the day. It finally rained a little during the SM 4 race. About half way the final race, SM 3 and Singlespeeds, the rain really started coming down.

There were a couple spots that were causing crashes. One was the sharp off camber right turn along the parking lot. The other one was the turn at the short, steep drop after the straight section with the start/finish. There also was a crash at the start of the SM Cat 3 race. I made a video of the crashes from some of my photos.

Next Pikes Peak Velo cyclocross race is November 21st at the same location.

Pikes Peak South Slope Redux

Pikes Peak Area Trail

In 1999, a series of public meetings to gather input on opening Pikes Peak’s south slope to recreation was attended by eager outdoor enthusiasts. Using input from those meetings, a sweeping master plan for the entire mountain, including the south slope, was completed in 2000.

So why were residents streaming into a hot conference room at the Leon Young Service Center Tuesday night, 10 years later, to discuss the possible opening of the mountain’s south slope? This meeting was organized by Colorado Springs Utilities, the department in charge of the south slope and its collection of seven reservoirs fed by Pikes Peak snowmelt and rainwater.

The original plan was never implemented, resulting in this eerily similar gathering. “Wow. Déjà vu,” said one person attending.

Those who were at this meeting were hesitant to guess when or even if they would ever explore the south slope trails. Some utilities employees believe a 2012 opening could be possible. Others are more pessimistic, remembering the 25-year wait for the opening of the North Slope. And still others recall that disasters such as the terrorist attacks of 9-11 and the Hayman fire of 2002, both of which were used as excuses by CSU to keep the gates locked, could occur.

But still, the overall mood was of subdued optimism. Even though the south slope has never opened, advocates for its expanded use aren’t giving up. A citizen advisory board has been working for several months on the new Colorado Springs Utilities Watershed Access Plan.

Another public meeting is planned for January, 2010. And CSU is still gathering input about how the south slope should be used recreationally. Should there be camping? An overnight hut system? Rock climbing? Fishing? If you missed this meeting, let CSU know your feelings about this hidden treasure by calling 448-4800 or checking on plan updates at csu.org

Pikes Peak Velo Cyclocross Race Sept. 12, 2009

The Pikes Peak Velo cyclocross race went well yesteray. Although it was cloudy all day, the rain held off until the final 2 races.

In between helping out with the race, I was able to shoot over a 1,000 photos. I'm still going through them. Check back later to see the photos and for a more detailed race report. In the meantime, there are several photos on my Twitpic stream.

Update 9/14/09: First set of Pikes Peak Velo cyclocross photos is uploaded. I'll be adding many more.

Pikes Peak Velo Cyclocross Race Saturday

Cyclocross at Bear Creek Park, Colorado Springs

The Pikes Peak Velo Supercross cyclocross race is this Saturday in Bear Creek Park in Colorado Springs. Races will going on throughout most of the day. See the race flyer for start times for each of the age groups/categories.

The planned course is pretty much the same as what we used last year. Of course it's possible there could be some late changes base on weather or other factors. You can take a look at the course map

Cyclocross is a fun way, intense way to stay fit. If you've never raced cross, you should give it a try.

If you aren't into racing, it's also great for spectating. Cyclocross races are held on short courses so you get to see the racers come by several times. The way the PPV Supercross is laid out you can also see several parts of the course at once on the north side.

I plan to be at the race most of the day. I won't be racing this one but I'll be helping set up the course, greeting people as they drive in, roaming around checking the course and whatever else needs to be done. I'll also be shooting photos whenever I get the chance.

Sand Creek Series Final and State Games of America

The Sand Creek Series final is this Saturday. It's also the mountain bike race for the State Games of America. Today at 5 PM is the deadline to register online.

Racers will be doing 1 or 2 laps of the Falcon Trail at the Air Force Academy. First racers will start at 8 AM with other classes starting a few minutes after.

The start/finish will be just northwest of the Falcon Stadium parking lot. From the course map, it appears the start is across Academy Drive from the parking lot. Check the Sand Creek Sports site for more info.

It's a great course. I'm bummed because I'd like to race it. This is my last big training weekend for the Leadville 100 and I'll be training on the Leadville course instead.

Climb Faster Than Tom Danielson? Win $1,000!

The 1st annualCarmichael Training Systems Cheyenne Cañon Time Trial is this Saturday, July 11th. The climb is only 3.1 miles but climbs 1,250 feet. One section in the middle is particularly steep.

When I started racing 20 years ago, we had a spring time trial training series. It ended with a time trial up Cheyenne Cañon. If I remember right, I did it in the 17-18 minute range which I thought was pretty good.

Tom Danielson has ridden it in 13 minutes, 34 seconds. There's a $1000.00 prime for breaking his time. I'll be surprised if it gets broken but you never know who will show up.

The race isn't just for fast road racers. There are also citizen and mountain bike categories. Tomorrow is the last day to register and registtration is online only.

For the kids there is Kids Fun Ride at Cheyenne Canon put on by Kids on Bikes. Registration for kids will be Saturday morning near the Starsmore Discovery Center. There will be 2 starts. The first for younger children or those with little or no riding experience is at 8:00 AM and the 2nd for more experienced kids at 8:20 AM.

Awards and more will be at The Endurance Sports Club at Carmichael Training Systems new location on 21st and HWY 24. Free food and drinks including beer from Bristol. The Tour De France will be on TV.

Colorado Springs Pro XCT

Max Plaxton Hops Up a Rock at Pro XCT #4 in Colorado Springs
It's been a long day so this is going to be a very short post. I had fun watching great racing at the CTS Sand Creek International Classic Pro XCT races today at Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

I talked to a few of the Pros after the races and they all liked the course. With all the racing, the rocks in the rock gardens were more exposed than in the past making them tougher to ride.

One section of trail was also taped off forcing the riders to go up a big rock. The top 10 Pro Men made it look easy but most of the others were getting off and running.

I took a lot of photos. I plan to post more but for now I have a few photos of each of the Pro races.

Colorado Springs Pro STXC Short Track Report

Pro Women at Colorado Springs Pro XCT Short Track

Heather Irminger Wins Colorado Springs Pro XCT Short TrackToday was the first of 2 days of top level mountain bike racing in Colorado Springs. The Pro XCT Short Track was held on a course with a lot of tight singletrack and lap times under 3 minutes. Racers said it was tough to move up except on the short climb on a wide gravel path on the backside.

In the Pro Women's race, a group of 4 formed at the front with Heather Irminger, Katie Compton, Catherine Pendrel and Katerina Nash. With a couple laps to go, Irminger and Compton opened a small gap.

Todd Wells and Jeremy Horgan-KobelskiIn the end hometown girl Compton couldn't get around Irminger coming out of the final corner and had to settle for 2nd. Catherine Pendrel rounded out the top 3.

In the Pro Men's race, it didn't take Todd Wells and Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski long to open up a gap on the rest of the field. Wells pulled off the win with JHK coming in 2nd. Geoff Kabush finished out the podium.

The racing continues tomorrow at Cheyenne Mountain State Park with the cross-country race. I wrote some about the cross-country course a few days ago.

Starting tomorrow (Saturday) at 6PM, Peak Region Cyclist is hosting a party at McCabe's Tavern downtown. Racers 1st drink is free with race number. There will be food and drink specials for everyone. Band starts at 9 PM.

I have posted more photos of the short track and cross country races.

CTS Sand Creek International Classic

Cougar's Shadow at Cheyenne Mountain State Park

Update: Pro XCT Race Report | Short Track Race Report

CTS Sand Creek International Classic Course MapNext weekend will have the most competitive mountain bike racing Colorado Springs has seen. The CTS Sand Creek International Classic is being held at Cheyenne Mountain State Park. It is one of only 7 mountain bike races in the US this year with international ranking points. Most of the top mountain biking Pros are registered to race.

The race isn't just for the Pros. It's part of the Sand Creek Series and will have all of the categories. See the race flyer for start times and number of laps. Pre-entry online is encouraged and closes on Wednesday.

Although we have some better mountain biking trails, the Cheyenne Mountain SP course is nice. For a race of this level, there needs to be easy access and room for an expo area. For those reasons, Cheyenne Mountains SP was chosen.

CTS Sand Creek International Classic Course ProfileMost of the 1st half of the course is climbing. There's a little up and down across the top before descending back to the start/finish. When I rode it, I got 5.02 miles and 1,070 feet of climbing. The official course GPS track has 4.9 miles and 960 feet.

Cheyenne Mountain from Cheyenne Mountain State ParkThe lower part of the course is open with plenty of places to pass. It'll be hard to pass on the first part of Cougar's Shadow but it's possible to pass just before it on the Blackmer Loop.

Originally the rocky, technical Medicine Wheel Trail was part of the course. It was taken out due to concerns about it being a bottle neck at the start of the race.

The lower trails have been covered with crushed limestone to reduce mud. When it's dry, it can be easy to slide on it. Some of the upper parts of Blackmer Loop and Cougar's Shadow don't have the limestone.

Rock Garden at Zook Loop and Blackmer LoopMost of the course is non-technical but there are some tricky rock sections on Cougar's Shadow. There's a rock garden at the junction of Zook Loop and Blackmer Loop. The course designer told me he thought it would be faster to run it but I was able to easily ride it without slowing much.

I've created a Google Map of the CTS Sand Creek International Classic course. If you click on the camera icons, you'll get photos of that part of the course.

The USA Cycling National Series Short Track Cross Country race is also Friday afternoon/evening. It will be held at Bear Creek Terrace on some of the same trails as the Wednesday evening Sand Creek races.

Zipline Trail Building

Zipline Trail Building
There was really good turn out today to build the Zipline trail. Over 30 people worked different parts of the day with Medicine Wheel. Zipline will connect the Section 16 parking lot to the Bear Creek Main Trail. The map above shows the section of Zipline that is now built.

Here are a few more photos.

Another Colorado Springs Trail

Zipline Trail, Colorado Springs
I'm fortunate to live where there are plenty of trails for mountain biking, hiking, running and even cross-country skiing on the occasions we actually get enough snow. Now Medicine Wheel is building another trail.

The new trail is currently being called Zipline. It will be an important connector between Section 16/Red Rock Canyon/ and the Bear Creek Main Trail.

I frequently connect between those trails. Now it means riding about a mile on a narrow, paved section of Gold Camp Road. It will be much nicer to ride singletrack to make the connection.

This Sunday, May 31st, is a trail building day for Zipline. No previous trail building experience is needed and all tools are provided. I've worn blisters building trail so you may want to take a pair of gloves.

There are 3 different shifts starting at 10 AM, Noon or 4 PM. Please send an email to Jim at jim@medwheel.org so he knows you're coming. See the Medicine Wheel page for more details.

Colorado Springs Ride of Silence Report 2009

Last evening was the annual Ride of Silence. It's a ride honor and remember those that have been injured or killed while cycling on the roadways. I've taken part in the Ride of Silence 2 out of the last 3 years.

Last weekend I checked to find the date of the ride this year. I found out that it was this week. I also found that one wasn't being organized in Colorado Springs this year. David Peal offered to help organize a ride. We got busy getting the word out and making plans.

We had about a dozen riders show up at Old Town Bike Shop for the ride which was many fewer than for last year's Ride of Silence. I was happy with that since we didn't plan in advance.

After reading the Ride of Silence poem, we had a moment of silence for this killed or injured. We then did a loop around downtown before heading over to where EJ and Jayson were killed. We had another moment of silent at the ghost bikes before heading back to Old Town.

Although the risks of riding on the road don't stop me from riding, they are something I think about. Especially when I was training for RAAM, I was riding thousands of miles on the road. The deaths of Bob Breedlove and EJ and Jayson have impacted me the most.

KKTV 11 News covered the ride. You can view the video and report online.

CTS Sand Creek Series #1 Photos

It was cool and overcast for the 1st race of the 2009 CTS Sand Creek Series. Just before the start of the Pro/Expert race, it started drizzling. I wasn't able to stay so I don't know how long it lasted for them. There were about 100 racers combined between the 3 races.

I took a lot of photos. Here are a few of them and I'll try to get more posted in a few days.

CTS Sand Creek Series Kicks Off This Sunday

2008 Sand Creek Series #3

The 7 race CTS Sand Creek Series kicks off this Sunday at Bear Creek Park. The race course loop will be done in the clockwise direction for this race.

There will be 3 different race start times with the Experts/Pros going last. I've copied the start times and categories below. Check the official race flyer and the Sand Creek website for details.

I won't be racing this time since I'm having trouble getting fit. If it wasn't Mother's Day I might go ahead and race. I plan to stop by for a little while but can't stay the whole time.

In addition to racing, there will be mountain bikes to demo at Bear Creek. I have the complete Sand Creek Series schedule posted.

Mountain Bike Demos this Weekend in Colorado Springs

Intense Spider 2 Mountain Bike
Today and tomorrow you can test out new mountain bikes in Colorado Springs. Intense, Kona, Rocky Mountain and Scott will be here with their demo bikes. With the demo bikes, you can generally do much more riding than even during a test ride at your local bike shop.

A couple weeks ago at the Fruita Fat Tire Festival, I demoed the Intense Spider 2. I rode a couple hours at the Grand Junction Lunch Loops. It was the last day and they were going to be packing up or I think they would have let me ride even longer. Intense has a demo schedule on their site so you can see if they'll be in your area.

Today the demo is at Palmer Park so there will be plenty of opportunity to ride on technical trails. Tomorrow will be at Bear Creek Park for the kick off to the CTS Sand Creek Series. Both days the demos are from 9 AM to 6 PM.

In addition to the mountain bike demos, there will be 2 mountain bike movies shown at Stargazers Theater on Parkside Drive. Both New World Disorder 9 and the new Red Bull Rampage "The Evolution" will be shown.

The demos and movie are brought to you by Ascent Cycling. You can read the announcement on their blog

White Acres Fundraising with Steve Weaver's Photos

Badwater Reflection, Death Valley National Park
Professional photographer and geologist Steve Weaver displayed his beautiful landscape photographs at the White Acres celebration last Sunday. Steve has offered to donate 40% of any sales of his photographs through the coming week to the White Acres - Section 16 Fund. $75,000 of private money needs to be raised by November 15th.

A couple photographs of his that I really like are of Arches National Park and Badwater. He has many more beautiful photos.

White Acres Open Space Celebration

White Acres, Colorado Springs
It is finally time to do some celebrating over the White Acres Open Space deal. Yesterday Colorado Springs made the final approval to acquire it for open space. It has been nearly a year since I first attended a TOPS Working Committee meeting on it.

I spoke in favor of it at the Colorado Springs council meeting a couple weeks ago when they voted unanimously for it. Yesterday's vote was just part of the required process and on the consent calendar. The 2nd vote though does allow a chance for a decision to be changed.

To celebrate the approval there will be a party and picnic this Sunday, May 3rd any time from 1-4 PM. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the afternoon. It will be at the pavilion on White Acres. There will be music, hiking and an art show and sale benefiting White Acres.

The pavilion is just up from the 5-way intersection of South 26th Street, Wheeler, Lower Gold Camp, Bear Creek Road, and Gold Camp Road. Since there is limited parking at the pavilion, please park on the gravel strip on the south side of Lower Gold Camp just east of the intersection. You can see the intersection in my Google map of White Acres.

Because of the limited TOPS funds this year, Friends of Red Rock Canyon and the Palmer Land Trust are cooperating in an effort to raise $75,000 for White Acres by November 15th. Any extra money raised will go toward the $640,000 needed to purchase Section 16 soon after. You can donate now online through the White Acres Pikes Peak Community Foundation Fund.

Important Colorado Spings White Acres Vote Tomorrow

White Acres Near Colorado Springs
Update 4/14/09: White Acres acquisition was passed unanimously by the Colorado Springs City Council. It won't be effective until the 2nd reading of the ordinance on April 28th but it should just be on the consent calendar. Now Friends of Red Rock Canyon Open Space need to raise $75k by December but the Palmer Foundation is helping out.

The Colorado Springs City Council will vote on purchasing White Acres for open space tomorrow. This is the most important vote. There's support on council for the purchase but there's also some uncertainty.

Read through my past White Acres posts for more info about it. The White Acres Google Map shows how it fits in with Red Rock Canyon Open Space and Section 16.

If possible, please come to show your support for White Acres Open Space. The meeting is at the Colorado Springs City Hall April 14th at 1:00 PM. White Acres is the first 2 items of new business on the agenda. There are several other items before new business so it's hard to tell how soon they'll get to White Acres.

Fundraising Event

In related news, Pizzeria Rustica will donate the proceeds from its Earth Week Passport to Tuscany" wine dinner toward the White Acres acquisition. The five course dinner will feature five selected wines from Tuscany/Umbria paired with five Tuscan dishes.

WHERE:Pizzeria Rustica 2527 W. Colorado Avenue

White Acres Open Space Passes 2nd Vote

White Acres, Colorado Springs

There was some more good news for White Acres this past week. On Thursday the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board unanimously approved TOPS acquisition of White Acres as open space. I was there along with about another dozen people to support the acquisition.

The next meeting about the White Acres open space acquisition will be on April 14th with the city council. This will most likely be the most important meeting. There is some support for White Acres on city council but also some uncertainty.

Friends of Red Rock Canyon have decided to not begin fundraising until city council has approved the acquisition. Originally they had planned to start immediately but felt there could be some issues with that. They need to raise $75,000 this year as part of the deal. Even so they do have commitments from some large donors already.

I've put together a Google Map of White Acres that also shows Section 16 and Red Rock Canyon Open Space. I don't know the exact boundaries especially for Red Rock Canyon but I think I got them fairly close. It also has some of the area trails.

If you're on Facebook, I also created a Save White Acres Cause. You can use it to help spread the word. It'll also be another way to get updates and share information on White Acres.

White Acres Acquisition Passes 1st of 3 Votes

White Acres near Colorado Springs, Colorado

I've been blogging quite a bit about White Acres. Hopefully it's not growing old for non-locals. It's a property I really don't want to be developed. It's visible from much of Colorado Springs and is surrounded by land that won't be developed. Red Rock Canyon Open Space is on the north, Section 16 is to the west and Bear Creek Canyon Park is to the southeast. There are a few houses hidden in the trees in Bear Creek Canyon but they're barely noticeable.

White Acres TrailThe photo above from SaveWhiteAcres.org and the GPS track to the right from one of my recent rides show why I'm passionate about this land. Without the critical section of social trail through the property, it wouldn't be possible to make the big trail loop with Red Rock Canyon and Section 16. Even though the development plan seems to allow for the trail, having houses would ruin the beauty and solitude.

Last week the White Acres annexation petition was postponed a 2nd time because a deal to buy it for open space seemed possible. An article in Tuesday's Gazette led many to believe the White Acres deal was approved. That is not the case. Although a deal is in fact on the table, the article ends by saying the deal still needs approval. It seems not everyone read that far.

White Acres Trail, Colorado SpringsThe asking price for White Acres has been dropped from $1.375 million to $1 million. More important is that the full purchase price isn't required now like it was when city council voted it down last year. Instead the purchase will be spread over 4 years.

One key thing that wasn't mentioned in the Gazette article is that this year, $75,000 of private money will need to be raised by December. Only $25,000 of TOPS funds are being committed this year by the city. If the private fundraising fails, the whole deal would most likely fall through. This is the only year private funding is required.

Friends of Red Rock Canyon will be doing the fundraising. They plan to have online donations set up by next week. In the unfortunate event that the deal doesn't go through, donations will be used for the eventual purchase of Section 16.

Although the purchase will be spread over 4 years, the remaining property will be leased for $1 until all parcels are purchased. The farthest west parcel will be the 1st purchased followed by the hogback. The south parcel along Gold Camp Road will be the 3rd and the 4th parcel will be the north parcel along Gold Camp. This means the land least suited to development will be bought first with the best land for development being left to last.

A 5th parcel will be donated which is a slice for the extension of 31st street that's been on the master plan for decades. I don't think it's likely 31st will be extended but the city wants to keep it's options open. Land bought with TOPS funds can only be used for open space. A 6th parcel isn't being bought by the city. The house at the 5 way stop at 26th, Gold Camp and Bear Creek Road is on this parcel.

I was at the TOPS Working Committee meeting yesterday morning. There were over a dozen citizens there in favor of the White Acres Acquisition. If anyone was against it, they didn't say anything. The committee voted unanimously to recommend acquisition with very little discussion.

The next vote will be by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board next week on Thursday March 12th. From what I heard, they will support acquisition.

The bigger unknown is whether city council will support the deal. I've heard there is support for it but its tough to know. They are dealing with a lot of other issues. It'll be key for everyone to make it to the council meeting on April 14th if at all possible.

Falcon Trail at Air Force Academy Google Map

As I mentioned in my first impressions Garmin Edge 705 Review, I'm trying out some of the GPS software. So far I haven't tried to navigate unfamiliar places or improve my training.

I've been experimenting with making cool maps of my rides to improve my ride reports. Hopefully I'll be able to provide some more detailed route information for those of you that want to head out on your own adventures.

One of the things I've done is use TopoFusion to geotag my photos from a mountain bike ride on the Falcon Trail in the Air Force Academy. I then linked them in Google Earth. From there I created a page that embeds a Google Map of the Falcon Trail.

Up in the upper right corner, you can choose to view Map, Satellite, Hybrid, Terrain, Earth, USGS Topo and USGS Aerial. I like the Earth one which gives a 3D view the best. It requires that the Google Earth plugin be installed so I haven't made it the default view. I've also seen the trail and the clickable photos disappear. Reloading the page seems to be needed to get them back. The view I like 2nd best is Terrain so I've made it the default.

How do you like the Falcon Trail map? How can I make it better?

View of Downtown Colorado Springs from White Acres

Two weeks ago the White Acres annexation petition was postponed for 2 weeks because of negotiations. Now the petition for annexation has been postponed until April 28th.

Friends of Red Rock Canyon will be raising money to cover most of the amount for 2009 since TOPS money is very limited.

The deal must now be formally approved by the TOPS Working Committee, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and the Colorado Springs City Council. The meetings at which approval will be considered are:

Peak Region Cyclist Show Report

Sibex Sports Display at Peak Region Cyclist Bicycle Show

I spent a couple hours at the 1st Annual Peak Region Cyclist Bicycle Show on Saturday. I could have easily spent the whole 5 hours they were open but my 4 and 5 year olds had plenty with the time I did spend. I think there were about 40 booths.

Local bike shops Bicycle Village, Team Telecycle, Old Town, Balanced Rock Bike and Ski, CS West Bikes, Pro Cycling, Colorado Springs Bike Shop, Criterium, Ascent Cycling and Colorado Cyclist were all there.

The highlight of the show for me was to talk to local bike and cycling accessories companies. I talked to Phil from Koobi Bike Saddles, Scott from Sibex Sports, local frame builder Jeff Tessier and Brent of Rec-Rac.

The show seemed like a success and I look forward to it being back next year. I have posted more Peak Region Cyclist Bicycle Show photos in the photo section.

My wife and I popped over the Trinity Brewing for a bit for the Women's Mountain Bike Association of Colorado Springs and Sunna Racing fundraiser. We were barely able to elbow our way in it was so packed.

I won some massage oil and Little Bada** Roadrash Boo Balm in the raffle. Also on the spur of the moment, I threw in choice of $25 gift certificate from the gift card guide.

In addition we went and hung out and the party and King's Chef Dinner. We also enjoyed watching American Flyers on the big screen at Kimball's.

Busy Weekend for Cyclists and Mountain Bikers in Colorado Springs

There is an unbelievable amount of cycling and mountain biking events going on this weekend in Colorado Springs. I posted a few days ago about the Peak Region Cyclist Bicycle Show on Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM. In addition to the show there is
  • Friday 6PM - 8PM Oscar's (333 S. Tejon) will be setting aside their patio just for the cycling community. Cash bar with drink specials. (21+ only please).
  • Saturday after the show there will be a private party for vendors from the show from 6pm-7pm (aka as Industry Only) and then anyone who attended the show will be given a stamp/ticket to get into this private party from 7pm-10pm. It will be at King Chef Diner on the corner of Bijou/Nevada. Beer provided by Bristol (FREE-while supplies last). May even have a DJ spinning funk/80s music. King Chef's legendary food will be available for purchase as well. (21+ Only please)
  • 10pm-"American Flyers" will be shown at Kimball's Pike's Peak Theater. Tickets will be available at the show and very good chance could sell out at show. (Short version: Go to show early). The theater does offer beer and wine for sale. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Pike's Peak Area Independent Film Festival. Call theater for details on that.
  • The Return of "Cycling Sundays" @ McCabes! (220 S. Tejon) 1pm-4pm. It's the end of the "Tour of California" this weekend and we will have it on all 3 TV's with sound when it comes on. Sure the foosball, darts, and jukebox (one of the best in town) will keep you occupied before and after the coverage. Food and drink specials. FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY! (so yeah, don't have to be 21+ for this Sunday/Family day event).

If you're coming from out of town, there's plenty of both mountain biking and road riding near the show.

The trails used for the Bear Creek races of the Sand Creek Series are just down the street. Red Rock Canyon Open Space, Section 16, Cheyenne Canon and Stratton Open Space are all nearby and have great trails. For road riding there's Gold Camp Road, Garden of the Gods and the big climb near by. If you want more info on Colorado Springs riding ask your questions in the comments below.

I found out last night when I was hanging out at Kinfolks in Manitou after doing the Incline that I somehow had missed another event this weekend. The Women’s Mountain Biking Association of Colorado Springs (WMBA of COS) is a new group in town. They have 12 women on their Sunna Racing team.

They are having a Gear and Beer Fest fundraiser Saturday and Trinity Brewing Company on Garden of the Gods road. There will be drawings for 30 nice prizes from sponsors and they'll be doing a silent auction for a 2009 World Cup Sid fork (MSRP: $952). Here's the blurb from their Facebook page
Hello friends-

We would like to invite you to learn about a new and exciting organization within the Colorado Springs cycling community by joining us for a fundraising event at Trinity Brewing Company on February 21st.

Last fall, four women cyclists: Elizabeth Turnage, Jessica Conner, Hillary Hienton, and Mary Hoyle, teamed up to begin developing a women’s racing team and non profit organization. We have worked together to find sponsorship from local businesses in support of Our Mission:

To encourage women of all levels of skill and interest in cycling through making the sport and cycling community in Colorado Springs more accessible and visible. We aim to encourage participation in race events through a developmental team, organize group and training rides, educate women through skill and bike maintenance clinics, and organize social events to promote community.

Sunna Racing, our cycling team, is made up of twelve women with an additional thirty or so other women interested in joining our non profit organization, the Women’s Mountain Biking Association of Colorado Springs…or WMBA of COS. It is wonderful to have found such an incredible response from this community. Our sponsors include SRAM, Trinity Brewing Company, Criterium Bicycle Shop, Penrad Imaging, Action Potential Physical Therapy, and Alison Dunlap Adventure Camps. We are also proud to announce that we are World Bicycle Relief volunteers!

By joining us at Trinity Brewing Company for our inaugural event, you will help enable us to begin fulfilling our mission statement for WMBA of COS. We hope to see each and every one of you on Feb 21st!

Thanks,

Betty Turnage, Hillary Hienton, Jessica Conner, and Mary Hoyle

1st Annual Peak Region Cyclist Bicycle Show

Update 2/23/09: I've posted my report of the Peak Region Cyclist Bicycle Show

Update 2/20/09: I've posted a few other cycling things going on in Colorado Springs this weekend plus some ride suggestions if you're coming from out of town for the show.

This Saturday, February 21st, from 10 AM to 3 PM is the 1st Annual Peak Region Cyclist Bicycle Show at the Norris-Penrose Center. It looks like it will be a quality event with at least most of the local bike shops being there plus several other good exhibitors. I plan on heading over there. Part of the $5 admission fee benefits the Pikes Peak Area Bikeways Coalition.

Peak Region Cyclist is a new local cycling magazine that published their first edition last June. Every issue has had very good articles. While many print publications are struggling, Peak Region Cyclist seems to be making it work. The print version can be found many places around town and you can also read it online.

Saturday evening they're bringing American Flyers to Kimball's Twin Peak Theater. I think it would be really sweet to see American Flyers on the big screen. It's showing at 10 PM. I don't see it listed on their site but everyone is invited.

Other weekly local cycling happenings are the pub crawl Thurday evenings and Cycling Sundays at McCabe's. Cycling Sundays are from 1-4 PM. This week the Tour of California will be on.

Highlights of the Peak Region Cyclist Bicycle Show are

Possible Good News for White Acres

White Acres

I went to the Colorado Springs city council meeting this afternoon because of the White Acres annexation proposal. Read my post from Sunday for some background information. Mr. Howard of Proverbs 3.5 LLC got up and asked that the presentation of the annexation proposal be postponed for 2 weeks. He said there had been some productive talks with City Parks and he wanted to continue those.

There was some discussion about whether to postpone it since quite a few people were there to discuss it. Scott Hente excused himself because he's done business with Mr. Howard in the past. Jerry Heimlicher was the only one to vote against postponing.

Heimlicher was the one that wrote the guest column in the Westside Pioneer. In it he stated he couldn't support development of White Acres. The council took a recess after voting to postpone.

Heimlicher came back and was talking to a small group of us. He said he didn't think it would be necessary to come back in 2 weeks and that it was a good thing. He also said he thought if the annexation had gone to a vote that it would have been rejected. He said he really couldn't say more than that.

I also talked to Chris Lieber from Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation. He seemed positive about what could happen with White Acres. We mainly talked about the 531 mile ride he and his family took on their quad bike from the Atlantic headed west. His kids are 9 and 10.

I'll be on the watch for any news about White Acres and will post it when I find it. If it's on the council agenda again in 2 weeks, I'll try going and getting the details.

White Acres Annexation to be Presented This Tuesday

White Acres Near Colorado Springs

I've written about possible development of White Acres a few times over the last year. The developer's petition for the annexation of White Acres is scheduled to be presented to the Colorado Springs City Council this Tuesday afternoon.

White Acres Near Colorado SpringsIf you don't know the background on White Acres, you can start with my report of the pre-annexation meeting in December and my post about whether development is a bluff. also Councilman Jerry Heimlicher post in the January 8th Westside Pioneer gives some insight into why the city hasn't bought the land for open space.

The meeting schedule is posted online. The petition for annexation is also online although I don't see anything other than legalese.

The Council meeting is this Tuesday, February 10th at 1:00 PM in the Colorado Springs City Hall, 107 N. Nevada Avenue, upstairs in the Council Chambers. Although the meeting agenda looks long, it is expected that the White Acres annexation will be near the beginning of the meeting. I plan to go down to see how it goes.

White Acres Near Colorado SpringsThe petition for annexation is the first formal step in the annexation process. City Council frequently accepts petitions for annexation as a routine matter, although Council can deny the petition at this stage.

Acceptance of the petition is NOT the same as approval of the annexation. If the petition is accepted, the application is referred to the planning department which studies the proposed annexation, reviews various reports, accepts public comment, and makes a recommendation to the Planning Commission. Planning Commission then makes a recommendation to Council to either approve or deny the annexation. This whole process takes months.

2009 Sand Creek Series Schedule Released

Eric Lawrence at Bear Creek Series

The schedule and venues for the 2009 Sand Creek Series have been announced. I'm not surprised that the Carmichael Training Systems Sand Creek International Classic will be held at Cheyenne Mountain State Park. It is a UCI race and part of the USA Cycling Pro MTB XCO Tour and the Western Final of the US Cup Series.

The rest of the series races will be at Bear Creek Park except the final will be at the Air Force Academy. It will also be the mountain bike race for the State
Games of America. There are plenty of great course options at the AFA so they should have a good course for the final.

DateVenue
Sunday, May 10 (Mother’s Day)Bear Creek Park
Wednesday, June 3Bear Creek Park
Saturday, June 13Cheyenne Mountain
State Park (UCI Race) (Pro XCT Race Report)
Wednesday, June 24Bear Creek Park
Wednesday, July 1Bear Creek Park
Wednesday, July 8Bear Creek Park
Saturday, August 1Air Force Academy

In addition to these confirmed series races, there could be one more Wednesday race. Also there will be another race at Cheyenne Mountain State Park on Saturday, September 19th. It will not be part of the series.

Update 4/17/09: Instead of the September race at Cheyenne Mountain State Park, there will be a non-series race at Palmer Park on October 17th. Also a National series Short Track XC has been added on Friday, June 12th.

Happy New Year 2009!

Here's hoping you have some great adventures in 2009! Some of my possible cycling adventures are on my schedule. I also hope to have some adventures off the bike. What are some of your adventure plans for 2009?

We stayed up last night until midnight. Every year the AdAmAn club hikes up Pikes Peak and sets off fireworks from the summit and midnight to bring in the New Year. Last night it was clear and it was cool seeing the fireworks light up the face of the mountain.

Tentative Dates for Sand Creek Mountain Bike Series

Sand Creek Sports Mountain Bike Series #3

Update 1/27/09: The 2009 Sand Creek Series schedule and venues have been posted.

Venues and dates haven't been finalized yet for the 2009 Carmichael Training Systems Sand Creek Series. Andy Bohlmann of Sand Creek Sports though told me they're planning for "two Wednesdays in June and July plus Saturday, June 13th for the UCI Pro Tour race with 3 possible venues. We are hoping for Sunday, May 10 (Mother's Day) and Saturday, August 1st as the final."

The Carmichael Training Systems Sand Creek International Classic on June 13th will be part of the series and will have races for all the series categories and not just the Pros.

Apparently the location for the ProXCT has yet to be decided. My contact at the country said "Andy is also looking at Cheyenne Mtn. State Park for the UCI course. Personally, I think that defeats the purpose. It's not very spectator friendly. Racing needs courses that give exposure and good spectator opportunities to grow. Just my 2 cents."

I agree that spectators are needed for races to do well. As a competitor though, I've found most spectator courses haven't been great courses for racing. It's tough to get a good balance between a great mountain bike course and one that the average spectator will watch.

A race is planned at Cheyenne Mountain State Park in September that won't be part of the series.

In addition to the mountain bike races, Sand Creek Sports puts on the Tour of Colorado on the road. Also through a partner, they offer guided mountain and road bicycle tours in the Southern Mexican State of Oaxaca

Colorado Springs UCI Mountain Bike Race in 2009

Sand Creek Sports, Bear Creek Race #3
2008 Sand Creek Sports, Bear Creek Race #3

Updates Pro XCT Report | Short Track Report | CTS Sand Creek International Classic info with course photos | Sand Creek Mountain Bike Series Schedule

Sand Creek Sports brought mountain bike racing back to Colorado Springs this year. They had great races at both Bear Creek Park and Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

They are making mountain bike racing even bigger in Colorado Springs in 2009. Today the 2009 USA Cycling Pro Cross Country Mountain Bike Tour (ProXCT) was announced. It is a 7 race professional cross country mountain bike series designed to recognize the top off-road racers in America. More series details are in USA Cycling's press release.

As part of the series, Sand Creek Sports is putting on the Carmichael Training Systems Sand Creek International Classic on June 13th. At this point I don't know what course they plan to use. I'll post more as I get some details.

In addition to the ProXCT race, there are plans to hold 4 Wednesday night races and 3 weekend races. I'm not sure if the ProXCT race is included as one of the weekend races. Dates and venues for the races are still being finalized.

Complete ProXCT schedule
  • March 29: U.S. Cup – Fontana, Calif.
  • April 19: Sea Otter Classic – Monterey, Calif.
  • May 31: Bump N’ Grind – Birmingham, Ala.
  • June 13: Carmichael Training Systems Sand Creek International Classic – Colorado Springs, Colo.
  • August 8: U.S. Cup – Mount Snow, West Dover, Vt.
  • August 15: Yankee Clipper at Windham Mountain, Windham, N.Y.
  • September 26: USA Cycling Pro Cross Country Mountain Bike Tour Finals, Las Vegas, Nev.

Is White Acres Development a Bluff?

White Acres, Colorado Springs
In my report on the White Acres pre-annexation meeting, I said it felt like Infinity Land Company was trying to force something. Email conversations with those that know more details seem to confirm it. Some believe that they are trying to use public opinion to be able to sell the land for a higher price.

Another developer doesn't see how they can get money to do the development. Permits for new houses are a tiny fraction of what they've been the last several years. At least one other project that Paul Howard of Infinity is involved with is in foreclosure.

White Acres, Colorado SpringsIt seems the city has a fair amount of control. I asked Mr. Howard what the effect on development would be if the city council reject annexation. He said they would develop as part of the county. I thought they needed the land annexed to build as many houses as they want to but he didn't answer that.

An article in the Gazette answers that question though. They would only be able to develop 8 lots if it's not annexed by the city. It seems like that would make it tough to make much of a profit on the development.

Although it appears less likely White Acres will be developed anytime soon, I'm still going to keep a close eye on it. I still think it's a good idea to take the actions I listed in my pre-annexation meeting post.

Mark, who posted the great video of White Acres last week, also video taped the pre-annexation and has been uploading clips of peoples comments to YouTube. He has one of Cyndy Kulp accusing Mr. Howard of blackmail.

Snowy Night Hike

Snow on Manitou Incline
This week we had a little snow. That didn't keep me and others from doing a night hike on the Manitou Incline. Once wasn't enough for Yeti so he did it twice.

Lights of Manitou Springs in the SnowI always find it a bit tough to go out when it's cold and dark but it doesn't take long before I'm enjoying it. Fresh snow at night always looks prettier than in the daylight when the light is flat. If it's still cloudy, the city lights reflect off the clouds and snow.

Icicle on FaceIt was 13 degrees when I started out but I quickly was sweating from the workout. With the cold, I ended up growing some nice icicles. I stayed plenty warm the whole time without putting my shell on.

Since the snow was fresh and not packed, it wasn't very slippery. I was wearing my hiking boots and ended up not putting my YakTrax on.

Snowy BushI learned one thing about working out hard in the cold and taking photos. Some guys hiking faster than me passed and I tried getting some photos. They ended up all fogged up. I checked the camera lens and it looked clear. I finally figured out the steam from my breathing was hanging in the air. I found I had to hold my breath for a few seconds before taking photos.

Please remember that using UltraRob.com to find your cycling and outdoor gear this holiday season helps those in poverty and disaster areas.

White Acres Annexation Pre-Application Meetting

White Acres Annexation Meeting
White Acres, Colorado SpringsLast night I went to the pre-application meeting for annexing White Acres. Read my post on White Acres from a couple days ago to see video and learn more about it.

City council rejected buying White Acres for open space during a closed session in September. Howard says he and the church would still rather see the land left as open space. He said even if they submit the annexation application, they will pull it if something can still be worked out for open space. Of course the church and Infinity want to get as much money as they can.

White Acres, Colorado SpringsI believe the church would like to see it open space. Infinity is just doing business. City council made their decision behind closed doors so we don't know their side of the story. Somehow though it feels like Infinity is trying to force something.

David Litzelman from city planning talked about the process for annexation. John Maynard from NES, Inc. spoke about their preliminary look at how the land could be developed. Paul Howard from Infinity Land Corporation, half owner of the property, talked about the open space negotiations and responded to most of the questions. Although there was a representative from Bethany Baptist Church, the long time owner, in the audience, he didn't speak.

The Development Plan

White Acres, Colorado SpringsThe plan they are talking about would have townhomes near the 5 way stop at 26th, Gold Camp and Bear Creek Road. Currently there's a house on the corner. Howard said something about 6-8 units. I'm not sure how many townhomes would be in a unit although I've seen a number 16-22 total townhomes.

Up the hillside toward the south would be single family homes. Currently there's a pavilion in this area. There would be approximately 27 lots that would be around 1/2 acre.

They wouldn't be able to develop the hogback because of the city's hillside ordinance. They'd be willing to leave the area on the backside open space. Howard didn't know if it would be given to city parks or how it would be managed.

Peoples Concerns

White Acres, Colorado SpringsBesides the obvious impact to the views and wildlife, peoples biggest concerns were traffic and water. Gold Camp Road the east would be able to handle traffic but I don't see 26th being able to handle much traffic. There were questions both about water for the homes and also how runoff would impact the surrounding area. Someone brought up a concern about increased risk of a brush fire and greater impact if there is one.

I asked what Infinity would do if the city council rejected annexation. Howard said they would go to El Paso county with development.

If the property isn't inside city limits, I don't believe Colorado Springs Utilities is required to supply water. It seems it could be difficult to develop it without annexation. I don't know much about development so does a reader have any insights on it?

Price Negotiations

White Acres, Colorado SpringsAccording to Howard, the city had the property appraised by a Denver company in March. That appraisal was $800,000. Infinity thought that was too low and wanted another appraisal. An appraisal in July came in at $2.1 million. He said they have a bank appraisal for $3.2 million. He said they would have sold White Acres for $1.375 million.

Even at $1.375 million, the land would be $29,000 an acre. The city paid $16,000 an acre for Red Rocks Canyon Open Space. Howard said that less of Red Rocks would have been able to be developed so they aren't asking that much.

Taking Advantage of Warmth Between Snow

Rock Quarry in Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Pikes Peak from Red Rock CanyonWe only had a little bit of snow at my house yesterday but 15 miles to the north there was over a foot of snow. Tomorrow is supposed to be cold again with snow showers. Today was an gorgeous mid 60 degree day.

Julie and I went for a hike in Red Rock Canyon Open Space. Our 4 year old was in the pack on my back. The hike put her to sleep.

I looked out at Red Rocks Canyon from my parent's kitchen every day growing up. It's such a beautiful place! It looks better now than it did then since the landfill is closed. It would be a shame if houses get built on White Acres along the upper part.

After the hike, I rode my bike over to pick up my kindergartener from school. After we rode back home, I rode some more. I felt good most of the ride. At the end, I was on empty but it was a good feeling.

White Acres to be Developed

White Acres, Colorado SpringsIt had been a while since I'd heard much on White Acres. It's a section of land for sale bordering Red Rock Canyon Open Space and Section 16. The video above really shows what a beautiful area it is. I also posted several photos of White Acres the beginning of June.

I attended a TOPS meeting in May for public input on buying it for open space. At the meeting in May, no cost for the property was discussed. According to an article in the November 20th Westside Pioneer, Bethany Baptist Church and Infinity Land Corporation wanted substantially more than the $16,000 an acre paid for Red Rock Open Space.

The city wasn't willing to pay the asking price so plans are going forward to develop it. They're also asking the city to annex the property. It seems that allows more houses to be built than if it remained outside city limits.

The plan is for 16-22 townhomes along Gold Camp Road. Approximately 27 single family homes would be built on the backside of the ridge and be visible from Section 16 and Red Rock Canyon Open Space. The ridgeline and hogback would be left undeveloped.

On the map to the left from Friends of Red Rock Canyon, Gold Camp road is the curved border on the east side of White Acres. The curved part starts at the 5 way stop sign on 26th street on the popular bike ride up 26th and Gold Camp.

How You Can Help

  • There's a meeting for public comment this Wednesday evening, December 3rd, from 6 to 8 at Midland Elementary School, 2110 West Broadway Street. I plan to be there.
  • Add your name to the Save White Acres petition. They will be giving the list to the city.
  • Help spread the word that this land is about to be developed. Many people don't know it's private property and about to be developed.

Frosty Night on the Manitou Incline

Frost Covered Tree on Manitou Incline
An informal group hikes the Manitou Incline each week and then meets at Kinfolks in Manitou for beer. Although I've been wanting to go, I hadn't made it until last week.

Our sunny, warm weather from earlier in the week was gone. It was replaced by cold and fog. It was interesting seeing headlamps in the fog.

Frosty Branches on the Manitou InclineIt didn't take long until the lights of Manitou disappeared in the fog and were just a glow in the fog. Eventually even the glow disappeared and it was just very dark.

Almost every weather condition has it's own beauty. Sometimes I don't notice the beauty because I'm grumbling about the weather. I didn't have any trouble noticing the beauty of the frost on the branches when the light from my headlamp hit them.

Although I'd been behind nearly everyone and they disappeared into the fog when I stopped to take some photos, Charlie and Josh caught me near the top. The 3 of us then hiked down Barr Trail together.

Frosty HairThe tree branches weren't the only things frosty. My hair was also covered in frost when I got back to the bottom. The photo is out of focus because I forgot I had put the camera on manual focus.

One of the cool things about heading over to Kinfolks was I met 2 local bloggers for the first time. Yeti blogs at UpaDowna about all things outdoors. He knows his stuff and teaches outdoor survival classes. Brownie does what I think is crazier than ultra cycling. He's an ultra runner and did both the Hardrock 100 and Leadville 100 run this year.

Pikes Peak Velo Cyclocross Photos November 2008

Pikes Peak Velo cyclocross November 2008

Update: View many more PPV cyclocross photos split out by class.

Today was the 2nd Pikes Peak Velo's SuperCross race. It wasn't cyclocross weather though. The course was dry and dusty with warm temperatures.

I helped with course setup and then roamed around the course. I was able to get a lot of photos. By a lot, I mean about 1,700. It'll take me a few days to go through them and post the good ones. In the meantime here are a few for you to enjoy. Click on the photos to enlarge them.

You can also look at my photos from the September cyclocross race. Those were taken with my old point and shoot camera so they aren't as good as the ones I took today with my digital SLR.

Pikes Peak Velo CycloCross Saturday.

Pikes Peak Velo Cyclocross 2007
The Pikes Peak Velo SuperCross race is tomorrow. First race is the juniors at 9 AM. Pro women are at 2:15 PM and Pro Men are at 3:10 PM.

There will plenty of racing action throughout the whole day. See the SuperCross race flyer for times for the other races. Cyclocross is perfect for spectators so even if you're not racing, come out and watch.

The course will be the same as in September. I thought we might have a bit longer loop on the hillside but that isn't the plan. There can also be slight changes on race day though.

Palmer Park Mountain Bike Ride

Mountain Biking Palmer Park

Yesterday was an awesome sunny day with the temperatures in the 60s. It's been a while since I've ridden out in Palmer Park so I headed out for some fun. I did a nice big loop including Palmer Point Trail, Greencrest, Kinnikinnick, and Grandview trails. I had a lot of fun playing in the November sunshine.

It's great having such good mountain biking surrounded by the city. Here are some pictures from the ride.

Pikes Peak Velo Cyclocross Photos from September

I've finally posted my photos of the September Pikes Peak Velo cyclocross race. Unfortunately I had to use my old Olympus Stylus 410 since my Olympus 750 got broken.

This weekend is our 2nd cyclocross race this fall at Bear Creek Park. We'll basically be using the same course as in September. There was a section we had to take out because the park manager was afraid it would get torn up because of the mud. That section may get used this time.

I'll be out at the course early Saturday morning setting up barriers and tape. During the first couple races, I'll be course marshaling. If things are running smoothly after that, hopefully I'll get to play with my Nikon D80.

Sand Creek Fall Mountain Bike Race

Eddie Miller at the Sand Creek Fall Mountain Bike Race
About The Shot Photography

The Sand Creek Sports fall mountain bike race at Cheyenne Mountain State Park was a week and a half ago. I was too busy playing lumberjack to go to it.

I had written that we could be buried in snow or it could be sunny and 80 degrees. We weren't far from the 80 degrees. It was a beautiful, sunny day with temperatures in the 70's.

From the course description, it sounded like a tough course and the finish times show it was. Local pro and one of my former teammates, Matt Simmons, found out he has lost some of his race fitness since he quit training hard 6 weeks ago.

About The Shot Photography has lots of photos of the racers. They show how cool Cheyenne Mountain State Park is.

Follow the links for the 3 lap, 2 lap and 1 lap results.

Comment on Proposed New Singletrack

Bear Creek Canyon/Section 16 Area

Medicine Wheel has proposed a new singletrack to connect between the Bear Creek Main Trail and the Section 16 trailhead. Currently there is a trail that drops down into Bear Creek, crosses the road and then climbs back up and meets the Main Trail. I've never liked that trail much and the proposed trail looks better.

Often when I ride the Palmer/Section 16 loop, Intemann Trail or Red Rocks Canyon / White Acres, I ride home from the Section 16 trail head. I generally just ride up Gold Camp Road to connect to the Bear Creek Main Trail. It would be nice to stay off the road.

If you support the approval of this new trail, please send an email to JHaley@springsgov.com. The parks board meeting to discuss it is next week on Thursday, October 9th.

The White Acres land that is for sale is close to the Section 16 trailhead. I haven't seen any updates recently about TOPS buying for open space. I've been there a couple times recently and someone has put up signs that say Save White Acres.

You can e-mail Chris at TOPS your thoughts on that land.

Another related mountain biking item is that Medicine Wheel is restarting the mountain bike patrol. They're having a meeting tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 at Trinity Brewing Company on 1466 Garden of the Gods Road.

October Mountain Bike Race in Colorado Springs

Sand Creek Series Mountain Bike Race, Colorado Springs
After six years without local mountain bike racing, Sand Creek Sports brought mountain bike racing back to Colorado Springs this summer. They're also putting a race on this fall at Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

The race is Saturday, October 18th. With the race in October, it could be buried in snow or sunny and 80 degrees. Most likely it'll be somewhere in between.

It looks like they have put together a great course. The Pros and Experts will be doing 3 laps for a little over 25 miles.

Course is 8.5 miles/lap starting at an elevation of 6,036' and with a high point of 6,634' and with a maximum climb at 18.3%! There will be some dismounts & walking, etc. on this climb. Estimated lap times for the very fastest should be around 45+/- minutes. Held in the shadow of NORAD at the base of Cheyenne Mountain, this mix of boulderized single track to off-cambered crushed granite course will give those who ride three laps about 4,500' of climbing.

Entry forms
and the USA Cycling release form are on the Sand Creek Sports website.

Changes for Saturday's Cyclocross Race at Bear Creek Park

Cyclocross at Bear Creek Park, Colorado Springs

The parking and course have been changed for this Saturday's cyclocross race at Bear Creek Park in Colorado Springs. I had posted a couple weeks ago that we wouldn't have as much work with directing traffic this year for cyclocross as we have in the past.

Unfortunately the Penrose Center decided today to not let us use their property so we'll be parking where we have in the past. You can still use the directions from the race flyer to get to the race. You'll just make the 1st right into the park once you turn onto Rio Grande Street.

It also means we can't use the new course we were planning to use. Last week the county had gotten all the grass mowed down. I rode a few laps of the complete course last Sunday and it was going to be very tough. Instead we'll be using a course similar to last year with a few improvements.

I won't be doing this race but may do the one on November 22nd if I can get in some good training. I'll be either course marshaling or directing traffic from around 10:30 to 2:30.

Come out and race and I'll cheer you on. If racing isn't your thing, cyclocross is great for spectators. The laps are short and you get to see riders several times. You also have a good chance of seeing some crashes.

Is Manitou Incline Finally Close to Being Legal?

Manitou Incline

Over the years, there have been several talks about making the Manitou Incline legal. Even though it is illegal, it is the most popular hike in the Pikes Peak region.

In December, the Pikes Peak Cog manager had said there might be news by spring on an agreement to make the Incline legal. The news never came.

According to an article in the Gazette a couple weeks ago, there is now an agreement written between the Cog Railway and city of Colorado Springs. Lawyers are reviewing the document. Colorado Springs would get an easement for a trail along the Incline in return for allowing the Cog to use a small parking lot at the end of Ruxton owned by the city.

Even if Colorado Springs and the Cog sign the agreement, things need to be worked out with Manitou Springs and the Forest Service.

The area around the bottom of the Incline is in Manitou Springs and neighbors haven't been happy with parking issues from the Incline being so popular. The top part the Incline is on National Forest land. The Forest Service has indicated they would support having it officially open.

2008 Colorado Balloon Classic

2008 Colorado Balloon Classic

Hot Air Balloons With Pikes PeakAnybody that has lived in Colorado Springs any length of time should know that the Colorado Balloon Classic is held every Labor day weekend. This weekend was 32nd time the event has been held.

It's been a long time since I've been to Memorial Park for the launch. We don't want to get the kids up early plus we don't like getting up either. Instead we have gone to the Balloon Glo in the evening.

The Balloon Glo is very cool with all of the balloons lit up in the dark. We drove to the Glo last evening but heard on the radio that it was canceled as we got to the park. At least we found out before we parked and walked.

Hot Air Balloon Over Downtown Colorado SpringsThe kids were really bummed to not see the balloons so we told them we'd get them early and go see the launch. It was a really nice morning although the launch was a little delayed because of winds. The winds were blowing so that the balloons would go toward the mountains instead of to the southeast where there are more places to land.

When the balloons did take off some of the first ones did go west and then as the wind shifted they almost came back. It made for some good views with the balloons close to the mountains. Getting up early on a holiday morning was worth it.
