A New Path to the Forest (Service)

July 2nd, 2010

We all love a simplified website address but the federal government has never really bought into the idea of simple, until now. The U.S. Forest Service – Pike and San Isabel National Forest, Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands has launched a new site, and the address is simpler – www.fs.usda.gov/psicc

According to a press release, the Department of Agriculture is working to standardize its agencies’ websites.

The site includes information on recreation, notices, news announcements, permits and more.

Coffee Break

June 1st, 2010

Primus Litech Coffee Press

Let’s talk camp coffee.

We’ve gone old-school – dumping coffee into a pot, letting it boil over the campfire and waiting for the grounds to sink to the bottom.  The result: gritty coffee.

We’ve prepared little coffee bags at home with our favorite grind and paper coffee filters. The result: Drinkable coffee, but usually weak.

We bought a cool little coffee press designed for camping. The result: Decent coffee, complicated preparation.

We’ve packed a tiny bottle of instant Folgers. The result: really bad coffee.

We’ve even gone without.  The result: grouchy campers.

But the camp coffee dilemma has been solved, thanks to Starbucks and its VIA Ready Brew packets. This is instant coffee that actually tastes like really good coffee.  It’s available in Starbucks stores and now can also be found at Costco, Target and WalMart. Twelve packets are $9.95.

Still Cold, Snowy in the Colorado High Country

May 26th, 2010
Camping Near Lake City

Planning on camping this weekend?  The region’s late-season snows have taken their toll on campgrounds near the Colorado Front Range. The U.S. Forest Service suggests contacting the ranger district where you want to camp before you head out.

Here’s a roundup:

Leadville Ranger District:  719-486-0749 – All sites are open, but some Turquoise Lake campgrounds are without water and flushable toilets.

Salida Ranger District:  719-539-3591 – Monarch Park and North Fork campgrounds are still closed.

San Carlos Ranger District:  719-269-8500 – Blue and Bear Lakes campgrounds are still closed.

Pikes Peak Ranger District:  719-636-1602 – All sites are open, but the Crags still has snow on the ground.

South Platte Ranger District:  303-275-5610  – All sites are open.

South Park Ranger District:  719-836-2031 – Kite Lake and Selkirk campgrounds are still closed. Jefferson Lake is still frozen, so it’s closed to boating and fishing.

Doggie Gifts

December 15th, 2009
Dog Hiking in Snow with Packs

It’s time to think about holiday gifts for your significant other – your dog.

Here’s some of my favorite outdoor gear for dogs

Cool Pooch Sport Bottle. We used to try and give our dog drinks from our Nalgene bottles, but most of the water ended up on the ground. So several years ago, we tried the Cool Pooch bottle, and now we never hike without it. Its innovative design with a plastic straw allows you to drink from the bottle and pour water into the attached water bowl for your dog to drink.

Doggles goggles. You wouldn’t think about heading out in the snow without your sunglasses. All that glare can harm your dog’s eyes, too. Doggles have fully adjustable head and chin straps and their lenses are cushioned with foam.

Lands End Dog Squall Jacket. We aren’t really into dressing up our beagle, but when the temperature drops, he starts to shiver. This practical jacket is wind- and snow-resistant, fleece-lined and easy to put on, and it’s trimmed with reflective binding.

Dog booties from Dogbooties.com  We tried to get our Lab to wear these a few years ago, and he high-stepped it around the house until he got them off his feet. But I know these things work – I’ve seen them on hard-working sled dogs in Alaska and Colorado. They come in nine colors.

REI Adventure Dog Tent. We’ve never had a tent for our dogs, but I love the idea of it. This would be perfect for a multi-day car camping trip. It weighs two pounds, five ounces, and is 45 by 37 by 31 inches.

Start Your Fire

November 24th, 2009

If you’re a fan of “Survivor,” you know it’s coming – the fire challenge that is an inevitable part of every one of the thousand or so seasons the reality show has aired.

Knowing how to start a fire without matches is part of Survival 101, yet after all these years, very few contestants practice before they’re called up. “Survivor” fan or contestant or not, fire-starting is a valuable skill in the outdoors.

Colorado Springs survival expert Peter Kummerfeldt told me he relies on a metal match for fire starting. “My number one fire-starting tool is a standard metal match that is not embedded in magnesium,” he says.

After metal matches, Kummerfeldt recommends REI’s storm-proof matches that are wind proof and nearly impossible to extinguish. He doesn’t recommend waterproof matches, which are painted with lacquer and are hard to light. Next most effective? A cigarette lighter. “The ubiquitous Bic lighter works,” Kummerfeldt says. “But it’s difficult to use when your hands lose their dexterity. Whatever your fire-starting tool is, it should be able to be used one-handed.”

Kummerfeldt suggests practicing before you head out. “The worst time to get your survival experience is when the experience is happening,” he says. The nuances of fire-starting are illustrated in this Teva video which spoofs outdoor experts like Bear Grylls and Survivorman Les Stroud. Check it out (wait for the ending), then go pick up a metal match and start practicing.

Camping Trip Near Lake City, CO Day 4 Photo Dump

July 15th, 2008

The 4th and last day of our camping trip near Lake City, CO didn’t involve any mountain biking or hiking. My brother rented a jeep and wanted to 4-wheel the Alpine Loop which goes over Cinnamon Pass, through Animas Fork and back over Engineer Pass. We also drove into Silverton. The first day when I rode Cinnamon Pass, I would have done the Alpine Loop if I had been fit enough.

Camping Trip Near Lake City, CO Day 1 Photo Dump

July 8th, 2008

Here is a photo dump from Friday June 27th. We drove down to Lake City the night before and got there a little after midnight. By the time we got the tent set up at the Wupperman Campground, it was a little after 1 AM so I didn’t get headed out for my ride until late morning.

I rode from our camp site to the top of Cinnamon Pass at 12,640. Fortunately it was one of the rare Colorado summer days without thunderstorms. With my lack of fitness, suffered plenty and had to walk some on the steeper sections.

A Cold Wet Weekend

August 29th, 2006

Last weekend my friend from work had something come up so he wasn’t able to go to with me to ride from Twin Lakes to Aspen. The weather forecast didn’t look promising but we went and camped anyway. We camped a couple miles up the South Fork Lake Creek road which is part way up Independence Pass at about 10,000 feet. The trailhead for Since it wasn’t raining, I put on my cycling clothes and started riding up Independence Pass. Julie was going to wait for me at the top to see if I needed more clothes. It wasn’t long until it started pouring rain. In Colorado there is no such thing as warm rain and with the temperature around 40 degrees it was very cold. Julie had stopped part way up to see if I was warm enough. I was but I didn’t want to spend the day riding in the rain so I jumped into the car. Once I started driving, it wasn’t long until the rain turned a little slushy.

Then all of a sudden we got through the clouds and the sun was out and it looked like a nice day. I got back on my bike and rode up to the top. By then the weather wasn’t looking so promising to the west toward Aspen.

After a short break with Julie and the kids, I started the plummet into Aspen. The descent down into Aspen is one of my favorite road descents in the state. It drops 4,300 feet and most of it is in the first 16 miles. It’s not a road for someone that is scared of heights or big drop offs. There are a couple sections where there’s no center line because the road is really only wide enough for one lane. The uphill traffic has right off way and if you’re going down you have to stop if you can’t fit. I can remember when they did have a center line but even in a little car you’d do go to have one tire on the center line and the other on the white line. The road was wet so it was a bit less fun since I took the corners a little slower than normal and also had water spraying into my face. I made it about half way down before it started pouring rain but it had stopped by the time I got into Aspen.

I then started the climb up to Maroon Lake. Once again it started pouring rain. When I got to the Forest Service booth where they restrict people driving up to the lake because of limited parking area, the ranger suggested I turn around. I told her I’d be fine and kept going since Julie and the girls were taking the bus up and were going to meet me. By the time, I got to the lake it had quit raining and wasn’t too bad although I couldn’t quite see the tops of the Maroon Bells.

I then descended back into Aspen and waited for Julie and the girls and had lunch with them. After we ate, I rode a little ways down valley because I wanted to get in at least 90 miles so that the ride would count for the Larry Schwartz Year Rounder Challenge and I hadn’t gotten a ride in for August yet. I didn’t go as far as I had planned to because I could see the rain coming again. I wanted to get started back up Independence Pass so I’d at least have a chance at finishing the ride.

Of course going back, meant climbing back up the 4,300 feet I had descended earlier. I was still on the rolling section before the real climbing started when it started raining again. This time though it was a light rain and wasn’t too bad. I had climbed for a while before it stopped but with the climbing I was staying plenty warm. I just took the climb nice and steady. At the top I put my vest on but I was still getting a bit cold on the descent back down to the South Fork Lake Creek road. Just before I got back to the road, Julie came since she had stayed in Aspen for a while at the rec center. I went down the road a little and back up to make it a 90 mile ride.

I have more pictures posted on my web site.
