Bikes Laid Out for Leadville 100 Start

If you got notified this week that you didn’t get picked in the Leadville 100 lottery, don’t despair. If you have an extra $975 and maybe some quick phone call skills, you can still get in this year.

Monday, February 15th, at 9 AM mountain time, registration for the Carmichael Training System camps will open and must be done by phone. There are 3 different weekend camps. I don’t know how many spots are available in each camp but in his newsletter today, Chris Carmichael said he expects them to fill up before the end of Monday.

The cost of the 2 day camps is $1250 and includes the Leadville 100 entry fee. Of course the extra $975 gets you 2 days with top notch coaches and time riding the Leadville 100 course.

One interesting thing about the camps is you can’t register for them unless you registered for the Leadville 100. It sounds like most of the slots are for people that got denied entry and you’ll have to provide proof you were denied entry. There will also be a limited number of spots for those that did get accepted into the race.

Sorry Rob, but this just smells bad to me. I'm disappointed I was rejected, but more so, I felt insulted that they would promote the option to feed the Carmichael machine. I've been there for years, competed, volunteered and been a champion for the cause, but it is no longer the race it was. Now looking elsewhere for mountain biking entertainment and more worthy venues. – – Dave Green

Thanks for the heads up on entry to the Leadville 100. Unfortunately I won't be able to participate in it, but it's nice to know this information for next time. Keep up the great blogging.

I agree. Chlouber makes no bones that the race is a money making machine, both for Leadville and himself, but…"there is still is way you can get in"…1250$ a plate CTS camp. Smells bad to me also but I'm sure Chlouber doesn't give a damn being the good old cowboy that he is. Adios Leadville

Very sleazy. Leadville Promoters: hey, there are no spots, sorry. Oh wait, if you spend $1250 on a Carmichael Leadville training camp (there are 3, 2 day sessions and they just happen to fall just before, during, and immediately after Breckenridge 100) there are spots!!! I really wanted to try Leadville, mostly b/c my friend is doing it, but I will do Breckenridge instead and Tahoe in September. There is no way I am going to pay 1250 to do two rides with the Carmichael folk. I've completed 24 hour races and have been coached by a world famous endurance specialist. THIS IS SUCH A SCAM!

This is a bitch-slap across the face of the history of the LT100. Ken doesn't accept transfers, presumably to prevent scalping, yet this 'get-in-with-Commical-Training-Camp-purchase' is just that!

Ken sold out, period. And apparently he's ok with that.

I do have mixed feelings about the Leadville entries through the CTS camps. CTS is here in town and I know some of the people. They're a 1st class organization.

I've also seen some video clips from their camps last year and they provided great information. For someone that doesn't have experience at this kind of race, the camp could be the difference between finishing and getting a DNF. The camps also help out the Leadville economy by bringing people to town another 3 weekends.

Tying an entry to the camp and promoting it for those that didn't get in does feel a bit like taking advantage of the race popularity. I don't know what CTS is giving the Leadville 100 for sponsorship but they're great with helping out with the mini-aid station late in the race.

I'm told that this kind of entry has been done for many years for popular Ironman races. You can see some examples at http://www.multisports.com
